Calgary: Snowed last night but now clear and sunny. I think we may be in for an early leaf out as well.......but, I say that every year!

Maybe this will finally be the early spring we have been waiting for?

Like Winnipeg that would normally be seen here around the May long weekend.

14C today and waiting for the storm to come (hopefully the cold won't damage the leaves).

We live in a country where "Central Canada" is used to describe a region clearly located in the eastern 1/3 of the country. I don't think maps have anything to do with it a lot of the time.

Central Canada is a funny thing... Each province seems to have a different understanding of where Central Canada is.

That said - its hard to place Edmonton in the northern half of Alberta, where as the dividing line for north/south is still several 100km's north of Edmonton.

By map, it's about 20km east of Winnipeg. By population/historical reasons, it's considered to be around Toronto.

By map, Edmonton is central Alberta. By population/historical reasons, it's considered northern Alberta.

No leaves on the trees yet here, but the grass is turning green and some flowers are starting pop up. Supposed to be 17 tomorrow, followed by a couple days of rain and snow, I expect this should get the grass the rest of the way green, and might see some leaves start to bud, though that typically happens around the end of April / beginning of May.

Hoping here this upcoming rain is good and that we can head back to "reasonable" warmth to get the land ready for seeding.

Praying here the *unseasonable* warmth (that we had almost all last fall, most of the winter, and most of this spring) doesn't continue into summer...I don't want a summer that never was either though.

Please Mother Nature just give the prairie provinces a summer in the mid 70's to the mid 80's with a nice rain every so often.

Past few days have been seasonable here (ie below 0C nights/mornings up to ~8C daytime)

I wouldn't put too much stock into the long range predictions, they rarely hold true. They called for the winter of discontent, while it ended up being one of the nicest in years across the country.

PrairieGirl
Apr 11, 2012, 10:46 PM
True however the positioning of the jet stream was really unprecedented this past winter thus putting all weather forecasting models in a tailspin. I noticed that our mets/climatologists said back in November that while the models were showing one forecast they all showed something different (none matched). It took the mets forever to find one that *might* show just 3 days in advance correctly.

Models can certainly be wrong but this past winter was truly uncharted territory.

I love spring in BC! April has actually been normal so far, a nice change from February and march (and last years spring).

Today was very typical, rain this morning, then a sunny afternoon, temps around 12 to 14, then some evening thundershowers.

But the good news is last weekends sunshine and warmth has caused the trees to explode with green, especially the cottonwoods, willows and alders.

So I love it. And the lush green is what really seals the deal for me. The majority of trees here a far beyond simply budding or flowers. The cottonwood, alder and birch forests are lush with greenery now.

As the severe-weather system moves in from the US, people from Windsor all the way to Montreal and as far north as Nickel Belt could see up to 35 mm of rain by Tuesday morning.

There's also a risk of thunderstorms across a large part of Ontario as far north as Sudbury. The Ottawa and Montreal areas could see the most severe weather, as temperatures there will flirt with 30°C.

This is indeed ahead of schedule. Leaves are coming out on trees 2 weeks earlier than usual. Some leaves started to come out during that March heatwave, but now everything is greener every day. I don't think we are more than one week behind the BC coast right now, which is exceptional. (if it was not of that heatwave in March and the cold spring you had out there, we would probably be one month behind)

I knew you would be excited about this....however, with the relative dryness of the air, and the wind and the fact that the sun is not that strong at this time of year, I wouldn't put on the a/c in a house..trap some of that warmth and then keep the heating at bay when it gets colder in a few days.

This spring has been so dry that I saw topsoil blowing across the highway near London, Ontario.

The last couple weeks have been wonderful in St. John's. It was about 16C yesterday, and I went for a long walk in just a t-shirt (16km). We've hit 20C today, but I'm stuck in the house studying. :(

Was the 30º degrees the earliest on record in Canada??

Windsor's earliest is April 22nd
Medicine Hat's earliest is April 20th
Kamloops' earliest is April 24nd
Winnipeg's earliest is April 18th
Estevan's earliest is April 20th
Regina's earliest is April 20th

However, it is not a record... the Huntingdon weather station recorded 31.1C on April 14th, 1968.:P
It had a 30.0C temperature on April 16th, 2002 as well.

Although the 31.4C yesterday might have been the highest recorded so early. Who knows?

:previous: Interesting how many of those April 30s happen in the prairies, which supposedly don't get "real" springs and summers. :P

Osooyoos probably would be up there, but I don't know if they're showing every little spot. Lytton is another place that might be.

We haven't had a real spring the last few years it seems like. Statistically speaking Calgary actually has the same or higher average daily high temp than many of these places that have been getting the hot weather this year.

Calgary is still cloudy, cold, and snowing, in case anyone cares. :haha:

Forecast is calling for low 20s in a few days though.

Weather has been downright crappy in southern Manitoba the past couple of weeks, after a great last two weeks of March with temps. in the high teens and twenties we now have a cold westerly flow from Alberta with cloud, rain and cool weather.

We went down briefly to -1C this morning...:help::uhh:

It only warmed to 10C with sunshine so it wasn't that bad but it's cold for this time of the year.

The Canadian warmspot was St John's, Newfoundland at 20.1C.

It was pretty solid. Unfortunately it appears our April joy has come to an end. Only 5C today, and rain until Saturday starting sometime late afternoon. Supposedly.

In other news, I'm heading to Dominican on Monday to celebrate my graduation (23rd to the 30th). I'm hoping to god that this weather information is incorrect:

But that doesn't mean it's not sunny!

Yeah, it is common in a lot of places like that for there to be thunderstorms every day and then sun afterwards. Often that shows up as rain/thunder for the day in forecasts. In other words, the "rain" forecast is no guarantee that you won't get sun.

Today was the first day I've had free since I've finished my exams. Hence of course the 20 degree weather had to disappear. At least we got a nice game of football in yesterday afternoon, the weather may not be nice enough to play again now for a while.

Great news. Thanks to you both. My fingers are crossed.

And to stay on topic, weather today in St. John's is quite mediocre. 2C currently, supposedly a high of 9C, but chance of showers all day. Doesn't look like we're going to get our sun back until tomorrow.
