Today, I can see they are digging up the old gas station and continuing to dig in the north west corner. There are large hills of dirt now from all the digging. The old sales centre is still being gutted.

Well, the sales centre is now gone!
Also, I would says excavation has officially begun, as they are applying shotcrete to the walls of the pits now.

They have removed the lane that was going through the site, and the pit is getting quite deep now, at least in the north west corner. Lots of shotcrete can be seen along the wall of it.

red-paladin

There has been a lot of excavation and the lane is gone. a new gravel ramp into the north west corner of the site has been built, and the whole site it basically a series of pits and dirt piles. The western side has shotcrete to hold up the walls in places.

Just passed by today on my way to school and they are excavating fast. I think they are around 25-30 feet down already on the section of the site next to Kings Way. Lots of activity this morning.

It's really deep. 4+ Floors? I'm not a very good judge.

haha sorry, I meant more along the lines of "how far down is the excavation going to be when completed" cause I figure it shouldn't be too long before concrete starts pouring.

I think he meant that the pit will be 4+ floors deep when it's completed. I'm assuming that the pit will be somewhere around 60-70 feet down because of the size of the building. As for the concrete, I'd say that they are still 3 weeks away from pouring any sort of serious concrete for the foundation.

This tower will actually be taller than the One Wall Centre minus the spire. Even with the Spire it is only 1 meter shorter.

I spoke to a construction worker there this morning.

She says there are 7 floors for the U/G parkade and another for utilities, then the slab.

The excavation for the Shangri-la was 85 feet. This being 90 feet makes it the deepest excavation for any building in BC. I saw the site today and the pit must be at minimum 60 feet deep.

All this is impressive to watch,as Mtrotown and other town centres get bigger and bigger. Regarding Metrown, though, doesn't Kinsway need some updating, both technically/infrastructure-wise, as well as looking sleeker and prettier, too? Or am I on the wrong thread, or 'jist plain wrong?

in what regard? the burnaby part of kingsway isn;t too bad, i like the area just west of willingdon - the plaza and the empty lots need filling but the other blocks are quite nice

east of metrotown though needs some work and its seems to be happenning now - directly across from mtown is slowly changing for the better

There's Central Boulevard parallel to Kingsway to the south and Grange which is somewhat parallel to the north.
The only real connections missing are across the mall site from Kingsway to Central Boulevard.

vanman
Nov 7, 2012, 10:13 PM
I really don't think the type of buyer purchasing in Station Square cares if more towers are going up within the vicinity. These are not the retirees of North Van. They've obviously been sold on the benefits of urban living, and may even see more development as a positive thing. More amenities and people in the neighborhood will help boost their property value over the long term. Plus you'd have to be damn near retarded to not notice the two cranes and massive construction site at one of the busiest intersections in all of Burnaby.

This is also very true. I miss living in that area of Burnaby. I loved it.

Surprisingly half decent ipod photo I took the other day.
This view is looking across Kingsway from the southern side, at the entrance of the Crystal Mall.

Thanks for the update - this thing is a total beast. I was on the Millennium Line this morning and it looked huge even from North Burnaby!

They are well into the repeating floorplates now, this thing should start to shoot up at about 1+ floor per week.

This building is going to be huge and very visible from Downtown.

True dat. This thing will be to Burnaby what Absolute World is to Mississauga in terms of height and visibility, although this can't compete architecturally.

Here is a photo of Sovereign that appears in a Straght news article about development in Burnaby. In a month it will be taller than the building at the north. I suspect tenants in that building won't be too happy.

^^ It's barely even 1/4 complete and it is almost as tall as the building next to it.
