Figured since the building is under construction and has been for a while now, it's probably a good idea for it to have it's own thread.

I like that area along with the other four towers.

Cant wait for the area one day to get a public square with Art Gallary

Cosmo from in front of the Drill Hall. The strong mid-rise massing of the podium works well for stand alone buildings like this; much better than a conventional two or three story townhouse podium.

^Thanks for the pics.

I'm definitely not surprised by how this is turning out (ie. bland, mundane, typical Concord building from 90's). Out of curiousity I went back to the UDP minutes from 2008 to see what comments 'the experts' made about the design at the time. http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/planning/udp/2008/minutes/jun18.html#1:

Evidently there was general consensus that the building was bland, mundane and typical Concord design from the 90's but it still got supported. Here's a few comments:

-The Panel...thought it was a repeat of past Concord projects.

-Several Panel members stated that the design looked like what was being done in the area 10 years ago.

-The Panel would like to see more “zing” in the colour palette and not have it look so much like other buildings on the Concord lands.

-Mr. Cheng said he agreed with the Panel’s comments especially concerning the colour as he also thought it looked too pale.

Knowing how cheap Concord is, I'm sure they had no interest in paying James Cheng to change the design since the UDP had approved it. Thanks again UDP! :yuck:

Are you for real? How can this derivative pile be timeless when it comes complete with those trendy and completely useless combovers. Even the proportions suck... it's got a identity crisis and can't decide whether's it's a mid-rise or a highrise... the podium is practically functioning in same way as the tower.

That's beyond lazy on the part of Concord. It's pathetic. With a little design mod, that lobby could have been flush with the street. With a family member in a wheelchair, I know how dehumanizing those lifts are.

I know this building gets some flack on SSP but, from a purely aesthetic POV, I really like it. Though one of my favourite buildings in Vancouver is HG2, so maybe that explains it.

Sidenote: I've never noticed the small, coloured panes of glass before. They're very subtle, and not exactly showing up to well with the ol' iPhone, but I have a feeling they'll age better than the Spectrum colour wheels.

Hey, I noticed the other day (did not have camera) that the trailers are all gone from the site beside Cosmo. Since people are living there now and all signs of construction are gone, does Cosmo's status officially change from "under construction to "completed"? And also the UC list would be back down to 17 from 18 in Vancouver,eh?
