There are a huge amount of homers on the forum, that show nothing but love for their own city
So, what is everyone's favourite city in the country that they don't or never have lived in
For me, the only large city I haven't been to is Ottawa, but my favourite of where I've been is Montreal by a longshot
Love Montreal.
Love Vancouver.

Churchill, Charlottetown, Saint John, in that order.
Since it's fair to say that Churchill isn't really a city, my vote would go to Charlottetown, though I would want to live in the hills outside of Charlottetown. My love for PEI is near endless. Nonetheless, Charlottetown gets my vote, with Saint John a very close second, assuming that Churchill doesn't count. If it does, then Churchill by a country mile.
Calgary, Toronto or Vancouver.

Monteal and Vancouver are both awesome, and for completely different reasons. Sadly most of my visiting of Canadian cities is for work, so it's to the cities I either don't care much for (not mentioning names on this forum!) or places I've never really had a chance to really check out as a result.

Replying to this thread under the premise of my hometown being Calgary, despite residing elsewhere.
---
My favourite Canadian cities outside of Calgary (those that I can say I positively enjoy being in, and can see myself wanting to live in) are Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal, in that order.
Vancouver has the upper hand because it's superior geographically, having both an appealing landscape and being much closer to home. Ottawa I find remarkably similar to Calgary in some ways, plus I have relatives in the area. The other two are just downright enjoyable to be in, but I have a slightly harder time seeing myself ending up in them.
After this comes Edmonton (my city of birth) and Victoria (pretty... and great weather). I have some affection for these two, but it falls short of love.
Halifax hasn't made a great deal of an impression on me yet, having spent little time there since I came to Nova Scotia.

You're definitely going to find some fellow Haligonians who disagree with you on that one. :P
And there's no way it's 30-45min. 45min might get you to downtown Toronto when you're flooring it on the 401 at 140km/h from Cambridge on a Sunday, assuming no obstructions.

I'm always fascinated as to why people live somewhere they'd rather not be, or don't live in their #1 pick. Is it family issues? Financial concerns? Do we have a lot of underage SSPers here? Tons of people away at school? Fear of the unknown?

I do like St. John's. The weather was getting to me before Christmas, but since early January it has been much better (more snow, less rain). The downtown is nice for a city this size; I've spent lots of time in Kelowna (pretty much the same size), and, although Kelowna has a great climate, I definitely prefer St. John's. I'll be quite content living here for 4 years, but once I graduate I doubt I'll stick around; I'll probably end up back in Calgary when I finish school.
BTW, when I was deciding where to go to school the final decision was between Ottawa and St. John's, and even though long-term I would prefer a city like Ottawa (I seem to really like the 1-2 million person cities), a couple events have taken place that make me glad that I did end up coming here instead.

You're tweaking the sensibilities of the Haligonians on the forum, they like to believe that they occupy a different plane of existence than anyone else on the east coast. (just kidding). :haha:
As for myself, It would be a tough choice picking just one favourite city in the country (aside from the one where I currently live). I will thus pick five:
- Charlottetown - small, liveable and civilized.
- Halifax - cosmopolitan in a manageable way, the harbour.
- Ottawa - the parklands, Rideau Canal and Parliament Hill.
- Toronto - Canada's metropolis.
- Vancouver - has it all, the ocean and the mountains as well as the climate.

Don't worry MonctonRad we Haligonians know not to take your posts too seriously just like Monctonians do to my famous posts in the Atlantic forum. :P
To the person that did think the Maritimes is one city it became official today ... Moncton is now a suburb of Halifax :P (I do not envy anyone who commutes over the Folly Pass).
But seriously I have no problem being compared to any other Atlantic city.
I've only been to S. Ontario and east plus Calgary so my list is based on a relatively small slice of Canada. And well if I exclude my hometown;
1) Moncton (family, convenience, welcoming)
2) Calgary (family, exciting, oppurtunities, oddly similar to Halifax)
3) Ottawa (beauty, cycling)
4) Q City (beauty, very unique city)
5) St. John's (never been but I know a lot of Newfies and the city seems like my type of place)
I should note that while I have been to Montreal I have never truly spent time in the city and as such don't really have an opinion on it. Toronto is way too big and unwelcoming for me and there's no push for me to even consider. I was on the verge of moving to Moncton or Calgary a while back but I decided Halifax was being to good to me to simply abandon it so I've delayed it for the time being. I'll eventually move away for some experience but I have promised myself to raise my family at home "down east".
For me the most important factors to consider when deciding wether to move are (in no particular order) Education, Family, Nightlife, and Active Transportation (aka biking everywheres). Also decent public transportation is a must since I don't live driving a car to do errands.
Right now I live in a great neighbourhood for my desires. It's an old neighbourhood (18th century) near the waterfront, all conveniences can be walked or biked to, it's a mixed community thats affordable, and there's a few bus routes on the main roads nearby.

Feb 8, 2011, 5:44 AM
I've lived in Sydney, Fredericton, and currently in Calgary and enjoy them all, so my list for those I haven't lived in, in order is:
Montreal - I just fell in love with this city the first time I visited it and I enjoy it more and more each time I go back. From the "mountain" to the old city to the downtown to the pub scene to the ease of use of the Metro, I love it all. It also helps that I'm a lifetime Habs fan, though I haven't really followed hockey for about 8-10 years or more.
Vancouver - Didn't get to spend much time there, but I got a definite feeling that I could easily enjoy living there (as long as I didn't have to drive much) after visiting it this past fall. It has a good mix of being a big city (Canadian standards) and a laid back coastal city.
Halifax - the bane of my existence (just kidding). Halifax is my second choice of cities when it comes to Maritime cities, with my hometown of Sydney being first. Halifax is stuck between being a small town and a big city in the "feel" of it, which isn't a bad thing in my view. It also helps that I have a significant chunk of my extended family there.
Ottawa - I've been there a couple of times and feel like I could enjoy living there. I'm not convinced it's a place I could settle down for good with a family (which is the stage of life I'm knocking on the door of now), but I definitely think I'd enjoy it for a good number of years.
St. John's - I have to put this one as an honorable mention. I was in St. John's for a grand total of about 3 hours of my lifetime on a trip to drop my sister of at MUN when I was about 15. It's a place I've always wanted to go back to, and while I can't really comment of the vibe of it, judging from the Newfies I know from around St. John's (I know several others from other areas of the province, so I want to make the distinction that this is based on those that I know from around St. John's), I feel like it would be a good place for me, though maybe not for my liver.

I find Vancouver to be quite a bit more decentralized than other Canadian cities (although the GTA may be getting there) and yes, if you have to commute all the way across from say Vancouver proper to Langley it can get annoying. The skytrain system is overall pretty good but I find most o the places it serves to be rather low density, so you're still looking at connecting to a bus in a lot of cases. If you can afford to live and work in downtown Van or one of the other major nodes like Metrotown it's really no problem though.

I could easily live in Vancouver or Victoria. If I were to leave Calgary it would have to include getting away from winter, so short of going south, those would be the best options. Quebec City is also very cool.

^ Exactly. Look what could have been if it wasn't for irrational Vancouverites putting a stop to it:

I guess I don't care that much with how something looks. How things function is much more important and the fact is that freeways (combined with city streets) allow a lot more vehicles to move than just city streets which is why the city should build them but sadly, function is taking a backseat to all things pretty.

There was something like that proposed for halifax
it was supposed to go all the way around the city along the harbour and had a bridge that was supposed to be built on georges island. (for those who dont know its a national historic site)
theres a map of it somewhere on here i think.
