This NCC land In Blackburn Hamlet is a substantial size. It has been unused and unkempt for several years now. The broken down greenhouses and storage sheds are an eyesore. A real waste of a terrific site.
I hope This Just Food attempt to turn it into something more visually appealing , useful, and unique works--seeing as I live within a few minutes walk from it.
Just Food would like to invite you to a meeting to discuss Greens Creek Farm, a proposed project we would like to initiate in your neighbourhood. * Please note that the meeting date and time has been changed from the Banar article.
When: Thurs. Feb. 24th from 7- 9pm
What: Meeting to discuss the proposed Greens Creek Farm project on 16 Tauvette (NCC property)
Where: Blackburn Community Hall, 190 Glen Park Dr.
Who are we?
Just Food is a community-based non-profit serving Ottawa and the surrounding area. Our goal is to increase local and sustainable food and farming systems, and to achieve this we've initiated an number of successful programs including the Ottawa Buy Local Food Guide, Savour Ottawa, the Community Gardening Network, a Farmer-to-farmer Training Series, as well as many gardening and food-oriented workshops. For more information on Just Food, please visit our website at www.justfood.ca
Our project vision:
Just Food would like to transform the NCC property at 16 Tauvette into a dynamic centre to promote local food. The Greens Creek Farm project would be a place where people could learn to grow food sustainably on many different scales; from household production to market gardening and small-scale farming. We would like to demonstrate the best practices in sustainable small-scale agriculture, and offer education and outreach to both local residents and visitors, as well as children’s programming, and volunteer and summer employment opportunities.
We have presented our proposal to Councillor Bloess, the Blackburn Community Association, NCC, residents on Tauvette St., and are now in the process of consulting with all local residents. In moving this community-based project forward, we want to hear your questions and suggestions so that we can integrate them into our planning as much as possible. If you can't attend the community meeting but would like to learn what came out of it, please contact our intern Sarah Lévesque-Walker, the community outreach coordinator. (Please note she works one day a week).
