hopkins architects: london 2012 olympic velodrome complete
over 18 months before the start of the games, london-based hopkins architects have completed the '2012 olympic velodrome', making it the first venue to be officially handed over to the olympic delivery authority. built on the old home of the eastway cycle track, the 6,000-seat indoor facility features a distinct, double-curve roof which was the result of an focused study into the performance and efficiency of the building.

The only thing I'm not convinced about on the velodrome is the ceiling - it feels a bit bland & value engineered compared to the rest of the space - I can't help thinking they could have done something more interesting, more like the Vancouver speed skating rink, which looked amazing.

Gorgeous building, great colour and form. The thin ribbon of glass underneath the massive roof really gives it a wide, flat feeling.

First thing I thought of when I saw this was the Calgary Saddledome.

There's the London Stadium development thread, which is full of construction photos, and isn't dedicated solely to the Olympic venues, so it's nice to have a new thread just for London 2012.

For those who don't know, London's Games is split between a large new Olympic Park in East London - most of whose venues should be completed this year - and well known venues across London like Wembley and Wimbldeon. There are also events outside of the capitial, like the football tournament which is nationwide, and the sailing events which will be on the south coast.

Here's a more full account of what you'll be seeing in just over a year....

Olympic Park: (u/c)

I posted a lot of new construction photos in the stadiums thread a week or so ago, so for those who want to see the progress of the main Olympic Park, here's that post:

Construction completed at the London Olympic Stadium

Today marked the end of construction on London’s most avidly-awaited structure over the last three years – the Olympic Stadium for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Designed by Populous, the ‘centre piece’ of the Stratford site is an ellipse, measuring 315m at its longest axis and 256m at its shortest axis. The final step will be to lay the running track, put off to ensure its protection during the programme of temporary overlay work for ceremonies.

Construction on the project commenced in May 2008 and now, less than three years later, the Olympic Stadium has been completed on time, under budget and touting an exemplary safety record. A ceremonial laying of the last strip of turf was attended by Chairman of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and Olympian Frank Fredericks, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chairman John Armitt, London 2012 Chair Sebastian Coe and 400m hurdles Olympic medallist Tasha Danvers. Local schoolchildren also turned out to watch the completion of this important project.

Completed Olympic Arena Makes Case for Temporary
June 10, 2011

Temporary architecture usually incorporates some combination of mobility, lightness, and minimal mass (or even, in the age of Pritzker/ Serpentine Gallery/world expo revivals, extravagant pavilions).

A basketball arena tag-team designed by Sinclair Knight Merz together with Wilkinson Eyre and KSS has just been completed, and was one of the fastest structures to be built for the games, ready an entire year in advance. Work began in October 2009, with the 1,000-ton steel frame being completed in March of last year; the all-white cladding was installed soon after, with the interior finally furbished over the past couple of months. The stadium as such will have its fifteen minutes next summer, then be deconstructed and shipped elsewhere for use.

14 July 2011 | By Andrea Klettner

Five of six main venues are now built

Allies & Morrison and RPS’s London 2012 International Broadcast Centre on the Olympic Park in east London has been completed.

The 275m-long building will form a part of the main media complex, including the main press centre.

During the Olympics more than 20,000 broadcasters, print journalists and photographers will use the 24-hour media hub to send reports throughout the world.

That stadium is kinda boring, the Beijing main stadium was way more kick ass than that.

Think for two seconds before you post the obvious

1. This stadium was designed to be 2/3rds temporary. Everything above the first tier was deisgned to be taken down after the Games to leave a 25k seat athletics stadium. Unlike Bejing's monolith which has hosted ONE sporting event since 2008 this is a demountable stadium built with post-Games use in mind. It mightn't be as flashy but it's a much better model for future hosts than the one Beijing provided.

2. A Birds Nest would cost probably £2bn to construct in London given the relative costs of building in Britain and China. Perhaps you could justify that kind of stadium spend in Texas if the Olympics ever came your way (though I'd doubt it), but we can't here, and neither could Chicago when they proposed a very similar stadium to London's in their excellent, albeit unsuccessful, plan to host the Games.

In short, it'll be a long time before we see another Birds Nest so don't hold your breath. Rio's athletics stadium for 2016 isn't particularly amazing and the early favourites for 2020 aren't proposing flashy new-builds that'd cost billions either. Don't judge future hosts by China's extreme extravegance because most countries, including your own I suspect, would never be able to justify building what they built for an Olympics.

- More than 3,000 tons of structural steel went into the Aquatics Centre's sweeping roof — about 10 times the amount, needed for the Velodrome's cable-net roof, which has only a slightly smaller span. However, Jim Heverin, associate director of Zaha Hadid Architects, defended the firm's design, saying, "The roof’s wave form differentiates the diving from the pool area." He added that "the necessary spans and loadings dictated the structure. Our prime concern was in ensuring a column-free space." To do this the aluminium-clad roof could bear off only three points — a wall on the south and two cores to the north. "These constraints forced the steel structure to work harder," he explained.

- Hyped as the key building of the Olympic Park complex, the Aquatics Centre has instead found itself fighting for attention with the Velodrome, which cost just $152 million and has received much critical praise for its spare structural design. British critics have cited the Velodrome as the odds-on favourite to win this year’s RIBA Stirling Prize. But Hadid brushed off any hint of living in its shadow. "Ours is the second biggest venue [the main stadium is bigger], holding three times the Velodrome’s capacity [in Games mode], so they are not really comparable," she said. "And anyway, the park is big enough for two or three good projects. [Ours] is not the only beauty queen here."

Floating Olympic Lanes by Dowling Jones and Stone
1 April 2012

London Mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled audacious emergency plans to avoid total gridlock in London during this Summers Olympic Games. Boris left Londoners amazed as he today unveiled a floating Olympic motorway that will stretch from Wandsworth 7 miles to Limehouse along the famous Thames. The scheme was hastily developed after traffic plans for the Olympic Games including the infamous Olympic Lanes were widely criticised. The floating lanes, controversially ear marked for use only by official Olympic cars will feature a major access junction at the world famous Tower bridge. The 118 year old structure will be adapted to allow access to the river road. The huge temporary structure costing £12 million will be hastily constructed and floated into place and assembled in time for the start of the games in July.

Gregg Stone of designers Dowling Jones & Stone, the London based consultants said ”the games is an extraordinary event and London presents unique transport challenges, taking to the river was the only way to keep things flowing”.

It doesnt' have an athletics track
Wembley is hosting many matches in the Olympic football tournament.
The regeneration potentil would have been a lot less with a Wembley centred plan because...
London's plan was for a new Park in East London with an athletics legacy post-2012. Using Wembley (perhaps with a platform supported track) would've meant the plan would've been more spread out and left no athletics centre post-Games as promised.
The promise of an athletics stadium post-Games in a dedicated sports-park differentiated our bid from Paris'. I'm quite certain had London proposed Wembley, we'd be gearing up for Paris 2012 now, and the Olympic Park site would still look similar to this:

Here's the Olympic Park 10 years ago:

stanton williams: eton manor

london-based firm stanton williams has sent images of the recently completed 'eton manor', a venue for the olympic and paralympic aquatic training for the london 2012 olympic park. accommodating 10,500 spectators for wheelchair tennis events and 3,000 for hockey games, the complex revitalizes its immediate context while creating a northern gateway into the park. the land has been reshaped to create smooth and accessible transitions from the area to bridges and facilities. a freshly layered site engages with its surroundings, tranforming the original heritage of the community center into a location for sporting legacy.

Biggest thing that bothers me about the Olympic Park is that 1. They aren't letting the public in unless they buy a specific ticket, and built a gigantic electrified Berlin Wall around it, and 2. the flipping torch is inside the stadium, away from public view.

I haven't been in the park yet, I will be going to a football/soccer match next week, but I can say from outside that the stadium looks pretty bland and boring, nothing close to as impressive as the Bird's Nest in Beijing (which I saw in person as well) but maybe I'll like it more when I am closer.

The aquatic center is gorgeous.

The giant red exhaust pipe is an abomination.

Unfortunately it looks like demand was off the charts as I too was unable to get passes.

The gated aspect to the park is unfortunate, but an IOC requirement (principally a relic of the events in Munich, as is the 'security road' that runs around the perimeter), in legacy mode the park will be opened up entirely.

The approach to the flame is definitely unique, but then that’s trademark London: being different and challenging the norm. I believe it was Thomas Heatherwick (the designer of the cauldron) who reflected that over the years the approach to the cauldron had become sterile, with little design evolution and a growing lack of intimacy. Interestingly I believe the 1948 cauldron was also resided inside the stadium.

IIRC the Olympic Stadium here is temporary (or at least partially temporary) whereas the Beijing one was permanent. The Aquatics Centre is permanent, but the white "wings" on the sides of it are temporary. Other than that I think the Water Polo arena and Basketball Arena are temporary as well.

Olympic Park Venues - Permanent
Copper Box, Handball Arena (7,000)
Velodrome (6,000)

Olympic Park Venues - Permanent with Temporary Additions
Olympic Stadium (80,000 > 25,000-60,000)
Aquatics Centre (17,500 > 2,500+)
Eton Manor (10,000 > TBC)

Olympic Park Venues - Temporary
Basketball Arena (12,000)
Riverbank Arena 1 (15,000)
Riverbank Arena 2 (5,000)
Water Polo Arena (5,000)

Across London and the South East there are a whole host of entirely temporary venues (Greenwich Park for Equestrian, Royal Artillery Barracks for Shooting and Horse Guards Parade for the Beach Volleyball), and utilisation of existing venues or sites (ExCeL, the O2, Lord’s Cricket Ground, Wimbledon, Wembley Arena, etc...) with various amendments or temporary seating. You then have all the football stadia across the UK, including Wembley in London

Outside of the Olympic Park, only the Lea Valley White Water Centre and Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy are permanent.
