This seems to be an old idea that is fading. Cost saving and other advantages.
I know of Winnipeg, how many other cities have the two joined? Or real close (tunnel).:koko::shrug:

Edmonton has its courthouse and remand centre kitty corner, but the remand portion is moving abuot 80 blocks north of downtown shortly.

Moncton's used to be on opposite sides of a parking lot. The courthouse was in an adjacent office tower. They've moved the courthouse now to directly beside the jail, but it has (or very soon will be) replaced by one about 25km away.

Hey Cold wasn't there something about an offshoot of the LRT tunnel that connected the jail downtown? I maybe remembering this wrong but I thought there was some sort of tunnel connection.

Fort William's original police station/courthouse/jail was a whole package kind of thing, but Port Arthur had always separated the three, with the police station and courthouse downtown and the jail on what was once the northeast end. (It's a big castle-like building in a residential area, sort of like Kingston Penitentiary.) There is a district jail in the rural area southwest of the city.

Our two main courthouses have some holding cells but no jail. The new courthouse will probably be the same. It will have a better way of transferring prisoners from vehicles to the building, though; the current set-ups are both prone to the occasional escape.

Yup, Court House and Remand Center are connected by a tunnel. To my knowledge its not a offshoot of the LRT. But a stand alone tunnel connecting both the Law Courts and Remand Center.

^from what I've heard, there's also a tunnel that leads to the LRT and a roughed-in unused/unlit underground station. It was never used, but the idea was someday it would be used as a prisoner transfer late at night to fort saskatchewan. I don't think that will ever be reality.

This is what it was, thanks Feepa.

Correct. The idea was to bring people to and from ft. sask and edm max via LRT cars that were armoured or something of the like.

Have there been plans to retrofit the existing remand centre post-move?

^haha we all are.

^^ no idea, could make a decent retrofitted housing for the less fortunate/homeless if done in a way to be a little less retention centre.

Only if the facility is stripped to the structure and rendered it a shell. Just thinking of all the carcinogens from all the smoking in the past will cause enough problems.
