.MacKinnon will be a ‘fan favourite’: Canada Games coach

MacKinnon trade from Baie-Comeau expected announced today Carl Gelinas, Francis Turbide and three first-rounders expected price Halifax gets its man: MacKinnon officially a Moosehead

So what’s the deal with this Nathan MacKinnon kid, anyway?

The 15-year-old Cole Harbour native is expected to officially become a member of the Halifax Mooseheads this morning in a blockbuster trade with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

And those who have yet to see MacKinnon play have got to be wondering what all the fuss is about.

The fuss is about the No. 1 overall pick in the QMJHL draft and a five-foot-11, 170-pound centre who The Hockey News has already pegged as a top-five prospect for the 2013 NHL draft.

“When he’s busting down the wing, you don’t have to be a hockey fan to know something special’s going on, that he’s a little better than anyone else,” said Troy Ryan, MacKinnon’s assistant coach at the Canada Winter Games. “You can hear it in the sound of the crowd.”

MacKinnon, who is coming off a 39-goal, 85-point season at Shattuck St.-Mary’s prep school in the state of Minnesota, was sensational at the Canada Games, finishing the seven-game tournament with eight goals and three assists.

“He’s a very dynamic and explosive hockey player,” said former Mooseheads associate coach Chris Donnelly, who was MacKinnon’s head coach at the Games.

“He only needs two or three steps and he’s at full flight … He’s not afraid to get in the dirty areas and he plays with an edge.”

Ryan said MacKinnon “lurks around like a shark” in the offensive zone.

“He wants the puck on his stick, he wants to be the guy that either succeeds or fails,” Ryan said.

Nobody wants to put unfair expectations on MacKinnon as a QMJHL rookie, and his linemates and ice time will in part dictate his point total. But his hard-working style is unlikely to disappoint, Donnelly said.

“He’s a guy who won’t cheat the fans one dime in the way he plays,” Donnelly said. “He’s going to be a fan favourite because of the charisma he brings and the style of game he plays … and he will be a team-first guy, there’s no question about it.”

I certainly hope Mackinnon isn't another one of those players who is labled as the next greatest player ever. It will be very interesting to see how he plays, and if this does fall through and he doesn't produce Halifax have put themselves back by about four years. Lots of pressure for a 16 year old.

I have to admit, though; I was tremendously excited when I heard he had been traded to Halifax.

Wildcats Sign Brandon Shea

Moncton NB - Moncton Wildcats head coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Danny Flynn is pleased to announce the signing of 2011, 1st round draft pick Brandon Shea will report to training camp on August 15th.

Shea, native of Marshfield Massachusetts, has chosen to report to Moncton over offers from both Boston College and a firm commitment from the USA U17 National Junior team. Shea played prep school hockey at Noble and Greenough in Dedham, Massachusetts. Brandon is 16 years old, 6’2 and 200 pounds. He had 24 points in his first season and 34 in his second at Noble and Greenough.

“We went up and took a visit” said Neil Shea, Brandon’s father. “We drove up and spent the day and drove back. We met Mr. Irving, Danny Flynn and all the coaches. They were quality people and made Brandon feel comfortable.”

“Brandon was the best 15-year-old all 10 of us scouts saw anywhere,” said Leo Gould, New England scout for the Wildcats and also the owner of the EJHL’s New England Junior Huskies. “Brandon has so much upside. He is a great skater. He has great hands. His ability is going to grow leaps and bounds. His development is going to be real good. Danny Flynn is a great coach and makes sure the kids do things properly.”

Danny Flynn is glad Brandon is coming to Moncton, “He is has a lot of talent with great pro potential, we look forward to having him as part of the Moncton Wildcats. He will be a great addition to our club now and into the future.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news, the Wildcats have drafted Roman Will, a 19 yr old goaltender from the Czech Republic

"Will played for the Czech national under-19 team in the Five Nations Cup and represented his country in the world under-18 championship and the under-18 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament. He's a candidate to play for the Czechs in the 2012 world junior championship after attending this summer's camp."
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The 'Cats seem to have drafted extremely well this year. If we can keep Marek Hrivik as a 20 yr old, he along with the Saulnier twins will give us needed punch up front. Add in Gormley and Milan on the D-line and the Cats should have a solid core this year.

In fact, the Wildcats, Sea Dogs and Mooseheads should all have very good teams this year. Maritime teams may dominate the Q League again.

The Wildcats seem to have their MoJo back. After a mediocre start this season, they have now won five in a row, including two dominant performance this weekend over Baie Comeau and Cape Breton (4-0 & 5-1 respectively). Roman Will in particular was dominant in both games and came within a whisker of lodging two consecutive shutouts.

The Cats are now nipping on the heels of the Mooseheads for second place in the division.

Wildcats winning streak is now seven in a row. They are a completely different looking team than at the beginning of the year. They looked pretty good tonight in a 4-3 victory over Victoriaville.

The Atlantic Division is definitely starting to differentiate between the haves (Saint John, Halifax and Moncton) and the have-nots (PEI, Cape Breton and Acadie-Bathurst). I suspect this split will deepen as the season wears on.

Rumour is that Brandon Gormley might be traded before Christmas. This would be sad news, but he is a 19 year old and if Danny Flynn wants to plan for the future, I suppose that Gormley would provide him with considerable bargaining power.

43 points in 27 games is pretty good, its not crosby or gretzky numbers but still pretty good for a 16 year old, plus the team is doing better than they have in years .

Sea Dog players Nathan Beaulieu and Jonathan Huberdeau as well as Wildcat Brandon Gormly were named to Team Canada's roster

Just read in the Globe & Mail that Brandon Gormley was the only Canadian player chosen for the World Junior Championship All-Star Team and was also selected as the best defenceman in the tournament...

Way to go Brandon!!

Brandon Gormley Traded to Shawinigan

Brandon Gormley, the star defenseman of the Moncton Wildcats, was traded to the Shawinigan Cataractes for defenseman Michael Matheson (94-02-27) as well as both their 5th round picks in 2012 (the second acquired from Lewiston), their first pick in the 2013 Import Draft as well as for 3rd and 5th round picks in 2013 and their 2nd round pick in 2014. Gormley has collected a total of 27 points this season, including 10 goals and was just recently named best defenseman at the World Junior Championship.

Don't know too much about this Matheson guy. My son tells me that he is a Yank who wouldn't report to the Cataractes (? linguistic issues). If so, I wonder if Danny Flynn doesn't have some secret assurances that he will report to Moncton instead. I gather he is a talented defenceman. The six draft picks are interesting. Danny is obviously building for the future but only one of the draft picks is in the first round and this is for a European import player. I'm sorry to see Gormley go, but at least he is guaranteed to play in one more Memorial Cup before the end of his junior career.

Yes, congratulations to the Sea Dogs. That's three years in a row that a NB team has won the Presidents Cup. This must rot the Quebec teams socks. :)

You never know, with the way the Mooseheads are coming along, maybe they'll make it four years in a row for a Maritime team next year!

Considering the dominance of the Sea Dogs, there must be a few NHL calibre players on the team.

See my avatar ? I was at the game yesterday. Rimouski got owned pretty bad. St John is by far the most talented team in the league and probably in the CHL. The best team won the cup that's for sure. Good luck for the memorial cup !

Congratulations to the Shawinigan Cataractes on winning the Memorial Cup.

They were a long shot to win but they pulled it off!

This is good for the QMJHL - our league often gets the least respect in the CHL but now we have won the Memorial Cup two years in a row.

I am also very happy for those Maritime players (Gormley, Ellis) who were traded to Shawinigan this year to bulk up their team. They truly deserved their chance to grasp the brass ring.

Supposedly Moncton will receive about three Shawinigan players for next season as part of the Gormley trade. This augers well for the Wildcats in 2012/13.....
