Part Two of the "Better Late Than Never" Series. These come from when I got my Canon Powershot S5 in September 2008. It was, not surprisingly, hot for Phoenix that day, so I bought a two gallon jug of water before venturing out.
We'd had a nasty storm the previous weekend, so the first couple of photos from the Encanto Park and Phoenix College areas show the branches and leaves that still had yet to be removed.
Unsurprisingly, given the heat, there weren't too many people out. To Phoenix's credit, there's been a lot of development taking place since these pictures were taken (Cityscape, light rail line opening, Maricopa County Court Tower), and I realize I need to get back down there sometime and catch the developments (preferably when its not too hot).

Starting in Midtown, right across the street from where I used to work (Park Central). The "punchcard" building:

Phoenix is a gold mine for fans of mid-20th century architecture. As a stadium geek, I relish the fact that the "Madhouse on McDowell" still stands, but the building itself is in serious need of some TLC. There's some great Paul Cozar murals on the inside. The Estrella Mountains are in the distance.

More ASU Downtown under construction. An Arizona Center tower in the distance. Arizona Center was to Downtown Phoenix in 1990 what Cityscape is to Downtown Phoenix today. Here's hoping Cityscape is a little more successful.

As this photo shows, Downtown Phoenix has a height limit of 500 feet south of Roosevelt for a reason. That's a Southwest 737 on approach to Sky Harbor from the west. Then again, when the airport first opened in 1927, it was out in the middle of nowhere.

Looking north on Central. Westward Ho in the distance. It was white when I first moved to Phoenix, so I have no idea who thought it would be a good idea to paint it gray?

I was aiming for a "Kingofthehill"-type shot of people

Chase Tower's security officers are pricks.

But I have yet to be harassed by them for taking pictures of their precious building

Now a retirement community, and no, this is not the hotel the camera panned into in the 1960 version of Psycho. That was the Hotel Adams.

Another of Chase, reflecting the then-under construction FreeportMcMoran building and the infamous Sheraton

Truth be told, I was ecstatic to find anyone milling about in the heat

I don't reckon its open?

Apparently management changed the name to "Hotel San Arlo"?

Hark! A person. Wearing jeans in 100+F temperature? For shame!

Sheriff Arpaio has his offices in the Wells Fargo Building. Hardly a day goes by without at least one protester outside the building.

More of ASU Downtown. Had I made the right choice by staying in Phoenix to pursue a masters in criminal justice, I would've been attending classes at the Downtown Campus.

Some of these buildings were renovated, and some of them were newly constructed, IIRC?

Its ugliness is hypnotic. Apparently the inside's nice, but I have to go inside

More ASU Downtown under construction. An Arizona Center tower in the distance. Arizona Center was to Downtown Phoenix in 1990 what Cityscape is to Downtown Phoenix today. Here's hoping Cityscape is a little more successful.

Goofy shit northeast of Downtown. Not sure what this neighborhood is called?

The following photos were taken in November 2008, but I figured they'd be a good way to close out this Phoenix photo tour. Skyline shots and other random items from atop South Mountain

As this photo shows, Downtown Phoenix has a height limit of 500 feet south of Roosevelt for a reason. That's a Southwest 737 on approach to Sky Harbor from the west. Then again, when the airport first opened in 1927, it was out in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for taking a look. Next up, DonB, my brother and I went to Tucson the day after Christmas in 2008 to check out Tucson. We found a fish head lying in the middle of the street.
