His only gaffe was the HST, and seriously I think a majority of British Columbians supported the HST itself, just not the way it was implemented. He turned the BC economy around, helped the province really flourish during the good times and helped us weather a recession. Gordon Campbell absolutely deserves The Order of British Columbia. One misstep should not define his overall contribution to BC.

He's easily right up there with the legendary W.A.C. Bennett in terms of dragging this former backwater kicking and screaming into modernity. Giving him the Order of BC is really a no-brainer, and I'm sure the majority of British Columbians will see it that way in a few years.

Right now, no. The Province is in too much chaos because of what Gordo has done with the HST, public transit projects, gap between rich and poor, class warfare, and so on. He pretty much left the province divided, and hence do not deserve such an award.

If the Province somehow fixes itself in the next two years (i.e. the BC Liberals are winnable), then maybe. I guess we will find out in the next month or two once all this hoopla dies down and people start making sane decisions. Because ultimately, every chaotic thing we see today with our politicians and decision makers in the Province are directly a result of Gordo, and Gordo alone.

It's really sad how people seem to think that by bringing up the drunk driving incident at every possible opportunity they can somehow de-value everything he's accomplished for this province and city.

When all the emotion and anger dies down, history will look at Gordon Campbel with a much more kind manner. People will see all the good work he has done for BC.
IMO, despite the mistake and misstep in the HST implementation, Gordon definitely deserves to be a recipient of The Order by BC.

I'm not devaluing what he's accomplished. He may well be the best premier in a generation, and he should be congratulated for that, and he should receive all the accolades he deserves. The point is he made a very poor choice, and did something very stupid and dangerous, and had an extreme lapse in character. The Order of BC is a prestigious prize, and should remain so by not being honoured upon those who have shown such poor judgment.

Or... the world economy turned around, Gordo was Premier at the time. The world economy then crashed, and we got deficits. Hardly surprising. There's bigger things at play there.

Pretty sure Wacky Bennett gets that title, yet he doesn't have the Order. Ironically as a conservative (Socred) Premier, he expanded government and nationalized many industries, creating the Crown corps we know today: BC Hydro and BC Ferries. His government launched UVIC and SFU and expanded highways across the province. I'd say if any Premier is worthy of shaping BC, it was him.

Only other I might consider is Dave Barrett, who despite being Premier for three years left many legacies including ICBC and the ALR.

Gordo's greatest achievement, IMO, was the carbon tax. We'll see if that last the test of time.

I doubt he deserves the designation, and even if he does, it came way too soon.
