Supposedly there is a redevelopment in the works that has been awarded Barrington Street Heritage District tax credits, but I haven't heard anything about it in months. Disappointing.

That's the attitude! Do you not think it could make a nice facade for a new building, thus perserving the look of our built heritage?

Even in this condition it's far better than the VIC.

Unfortunately this sentiment is pretty much what caused the current situation. Back in 1994 council said "oh, it could make a nice facade for a new building one day" and forked over money to prop it up in the meantime. 17 years later it is unchanged aside from having continued to deteriorate.

I disagree that the facade is better than the Vic apartments, which look pretty good and, most importantly, have people living in them and space for shops that will be useful to people in the area. At best the NFB facade is a kind of curiosity. At worst it ties up valuable land and gives visitors and residents the impression that Halifax is akin to a dying industrial city or maybe London circa 1945. It does not contribute to the vibrancy of the downtown.

The VIC is 'cheap' unlike the NFB building. The VIC has a concrete fake stone facade, vinyl shingles, styrofoam trim, fake wooden panels and pink glass/plexiglass balconies. The fake stone will streak, the vinyl and fake wood will fade or blow off and the balcony glass will streak with rust and suffer UV damage. In 10 years this building will need a serious makeover.

There is no NFB Building. It is simply a vandalized facade of what used to be a building. It is an eyesore and detracts from the street.

And that is the problem. This city allows it's built heritage to be run into the ground! The problem is not the condition of the remaining facade, it is the lack of vision, the lack of leadership, the lack of proper by laws regarding development and empty lots and little or no respect for our built heritage. Yes Keith, it is an eyesore and whoever owns it should be forced to incorporate it into a development or have it taxed for not being developed!

Well, it's not 40°c, but the last week or so has been really miserable, with warm temps and lots of humidity. Today was like a steam bath when the sun came out, though it has cooled off now.

I don't know how people deal with it in place like Atlanta were it is hot and humid for half the year. I suspect summer down there is like winter up here, or maybe worse. Mexico's similar. It's fun for a few days when you're on holiday but I wouldn't want to live in that.

Halifax weather is far from perfect but I've been a bit nostalgic about it lately. Here in Vancouver we've had a really bad year with long stretches of zero sun and very cold summer temperatures (days of 13 or 14 and rain in June).

I'm not even sure I like Vancouver winters more than Halifax winters, except for the lack of wind here. Halifax gets sunny winter days that Vancouverites would just about kill for come January. Spring here on the West Coast is better though.

The nicest climate I think is San Francisco. It is like a dry version of Halifax or Vancouver from May to October. Of course, Italy has roughly the same mild Mediterranean winters.

Oh, i would pay for some humidity:tup:.
I don't know if you ever hear Crotone (my city, in the south of Italy). In my country there's the sun shining constantly, and the hot is insupportable.:hell:
But during the winter, the temperature fly down (in my city 7/8 c°, and if are lucky, -2/-3 °c).;)

Yes, here (i stay near "Mar Ionio") is good during the winter. But i love the cold and i think Halifax is perfect for the people looks like me.

Ah ok.
At the end is only a matter of habit ;).
The italian water is cold during the morning, but in the afternoon (when the sun is most strong) heats and is really nice.
