Decided to try and spruce up our diagram a little with some new additions.
The old diagrams for the Colborne Centre complex were looking pretty tired so I've started drawing new ones. They're mostly done, just not sure whether I like the trees or not. And there's supposed to be a few trees on the left too. What do you guys think?

Once I finish and submit these I'll start work on the Harriston.

Wow, nice! Certainly not the best looking buildings, but these diagrams look great. If you're going to add some diagrams, I would also recommend you do the Crown on King, and maybe redo the Ren towers. They look like hulking beasts right now!

I started working on the Harriston, but damn is that building ugly. Just drawing that monster was putting me in a sour mood. The Colborne apartments may be ugly, but at least the know they're ugly.
So I drew the Crown on King apartments instead. SSP had the height estimated at 73m, but the developer received a maximum allowance of 80m. I figure I'll have to edit the diagram once the buildings are actually complete so if the height is off I'll fix it then. Also, the taller tower is definitely the one under construction, right? Maybe I should add that to the comment section when I submit the diagram...

So I drew the Crown on King apartments instead. SSP had the height estimated at 73m, but the developer received a maximum allowance of 80m.
Residential towers with 9' ceilings are generally 3.1m between floors.
3.1m X 24floors = 74m + a 6m mech penthouse = 80m.
You can safely go with 80m in height now.
Also, the taller tower is definitely the one under construction, right?
Yes. The second, shorter tower will be about 71m.
Also: the Harriston will be about 80 - 83m.
The Renaissance towers should be re-drawn. The posted renderings are fairly inaccurate. Check your PM's for details.
Other buildings at 50+ metres not included in the SSP diagram include:
- London Towers South (65m)
- 520 Talbot (60m)
- 155 Kent (48m)
- 190 Cherryhill Circle (62m)
- Victoria Hospital (approx. 65m) (that would be one hell of a drawing, viewed from Commissioner's Rd: 185m wide, 65m tall, 3 towers)
bolognium
Oct 27, 2011, 2:57 AM
Thanks for the Harriston numbers, Snark. Again SSP's estimate seemed kind of low on that one. I wasn't even able to fit in the mechanical room using their 70m estimate.
http://i.imgur.com/1xNHY.gif
After I finish the Harriston I think I'll redo the London Towers complex. Like you said, the south tower is missing and the east tower's diagram is screaming for an update. On top of your list, the Gartshore towers on Ridout, Station Park Hotel on Pall Mall and Peter McGregor tower on King should probably be done at some point.
Also, thanks for the Renaissance line drawing. I think I'll take a shot at drawing it once I complete a few of the missing buildings you mentioned. And that Victoria Hospital drawing should be fun, there's certainly nothing like that on London's diagram right now.
- Victoria Hospital (approx. 65m) (that would be one hell of a drawing, viewed from Commissioner's Rd: 185m wide, 65m tall, 3 towers)
Yes please!!! That would be one of the best additions you could make !!!

So we're going to go with the 80.3 meter estimate for the Harriston tower?
Doesn't that seem somewhat tall, considering most residential towers of 23 floors are in the 60 to 70-meter range, or is there a particular oversize ceiling height element to this building?
Great work on the diagrams, btw, Bolognium. And please be sure to watermark your illustrations when posting to the forums. That keeps them from being used without proper credit and attribution :)

Yes there is: 9 foot ceilings in all residential units and common-use penthouse (3.1m per floor), above ground internal parking for 2 floors (worth 3.5m - 4m per floor), and an inordinately tall mech penthouse.
Imagery shows the structure to be nearly identical in height to the nearby Talbot Centre towers, such as this image posted last year from Dither City that illustrates this last point very well. Both buildings are pretty much the same distance from the camera and the camera viewpoint at a higher elevation in order to make a consistent comparison:

Thanks everyone. Haljackey, the Crown diagrams have been in the pending approval (http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=104) queue since October 27th so I'd imagine they'll be added within a few days. I think they're taking a little longer than the others since I mentioned how the taller tower is the one that's actually under construction. Maybe they have to verify that somehow.

The Dominion Public Building (old post office) is the best example of Art-Deco architecture in Southwest Ontario, at least in my opinion.
It may also qualify for a drawing because it was the tallest building outside of Toronto for many, many years.

I hope we're not burdening with requests, but have you thought about doing the Sunlife at Grosvenor Gate buildings? That will add two more proposals to the diagram list (and bump City Hall even further back :P).

Symz, I use a combination of MS Paint and Photoshop. I'm really comfortable using Paint and could draw these diagrams without Photoshop, but the layers and opacity settings in PS make the process a lot quicker.
Haljackey, I don't mind the requests so long as you guys realize it may take a while. I have never seen a render of the Sunlife buildings so I don't know what to draw for their diagrams.
Anyhow, I was getting bored of the London Towers so this afternoon I drew the old TD building. Thought you guys would enjoy a little step by step as well. Sorry about the watermark, just taking Mike's advice.

Yeah the London Towers are pretty stale. That weird contrast on the north one gives it a unique but ugly look.
Have you thought about making the south tower? The nearby Marriott hotel at Dundas and Colboune may also be a decent candidate for a drawing because it doesn't look half-bad, especially compared to the Hilton. :P

Thanks a lot, koops. That means a lot coming from someone who's drawn as many diagrams as yourself.
Yeah, the west face of the North Tower is pretty fugly, Haljackey. I still like these towers a lot more than the Colborne Centre apartments, though. I'll probably draw the Marriott at some point, but I'm not sure when. After I complete the South Tower I'm thinking I'll do the Peter McGregor on King. It'll be really easy to draw and the north face has a lot of glass balconies.
There's just so many buildings I'd like to draw. Here are the main ones I really want to get done:
-Gartshore Towers on Ridout
-Station Park Hotel on Pall Mall
-Peter McGregor and the beige condo tower on Thames Street.
-Dominion Public
-520 Talbot
-London Life
-Cool teal modernist office building on Queens and Clarence.
-Sunlife at Grosvenor (assuming there are renderings out there)
Haha, what else?

Just a few things left until the South Tower is done (namely the ground floor). I had to use a bit of artistic license on the roof since the pictures I'm working from aren't of the best quality.

Here are the best pictures I could find. If anyone else can come up with something better please post it here so I can accurately draw the top floor.

From the top? Or street level? If street level, since I was laid off, I have all SORTS of time :( but I'd be happy to help tomorrow if that works. I'll take a camera out not my usual cell too

Feb 24, 2012, 4:40 AM
I meant the top portion, I've been using Google Streetview for the ground floor. The southwest face of the smaller tower is basically just an entrance to underground parking and some stairs. I didn't feel like it justified actually taking the time to walk over there to snap some pictures.
I've just been trying to figure out what's going on at rooftop level. From the two pictures I posted it kind of looks like a rooftop patio or something, with a glass sunroom. But really I have no clue.
And sucks to hear you were laid off. :(

Is there a tutorial on making diagrams? I'm just curious how involved the process is. I'm planning to draw the London Life building eventually, but I know it's going to be very time consuming if I want to do it well. I also can't decide which direction do draw it from. If I drew the classic Victoria Park facade, then I'd miss out on the cool modernist facade along Queens. And then there's the rear of the building with the huge 8 story portion.
Also, I just submitted my other London Towers diagram and noticed your pending drawings, Fazdeh. You did an awesome job on the Dominion Public Building.

I completely understand your concerns about London Life.. I assume the most effective angle would be from Wellington and Dufferin, best of both worlds? That being said.. its just such a massive building.. to get all the great details, would be frustrating.
As for Dominion? Thanks! I actually had my browser open and was constantly using your Huron and Erie building for inspiration, angled shading was daunting, but I've since been trying to get into the swing of it.
My next attempts will be UWO buildings I think, Social sci is brutalist, but interesting, and U.H.. well.. that will be a challenge.

Awesome new drawings FazDeH! The Dominion Public Building is only 8 floors? Looks a lot taller than that.
As for switching two London Place? I have no clue how that would be done...
Not sure either. After looking at SSP's database, it also shows that the Library Tower (a tower sticking out of the old central library like the Delta hotel does to the armories) is shown as canceled.
As far as I am aware, there are still plans to build it based on what I was told by a city planner. Funding and demand are the main issues right now... With the second Renaissance tower going up London's housing development downtown may be a little bloated at the present time.
There just needs to be more downtown to support more residents like a grocery store.

I get the feeling we'll need some concrete info before Two London Place can be changed to proposed. Sure the tower could start quickly rising since the foundation's already poured, but it might be years until Sifton feels comfortable building it. I personally feel like 2LP is still a stale proposal at best.
Here's one of the Gartshore towers about a third done. So far it's all been drawn in MS Paint. Once it's done I'll post a slightly more comprehensive step by step if you guys are still interested.

I do the majority of my work in Paint, and hop into Photoshop to do shadows.
http://i.imgur.com/DyF3P.png
So up until that black line I was drawing exclusively in Paint. Once the shadows were done in PS I went back to Paint and added little touches like window highlights, rooftop antennae, etc. If you compare the drawing before the black line to the final one, you can see how the shadow gradient makes the building seem more realistic and a little less 2D.
Here's a peak of what I do in PS, from the top down it shows the grey wall's shadow gradient and a dark blue gradient over the windows:

Yeah, doing the shadowing in Photoshop is just so much easier because of the layers and opacity settings. Changing the opacity allows you to adjust the transparency of the layer so that you can just add shadow above your drawing.
The alternative to Photoshop is a free program called GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/). It has many of the same options as PS, and is more than equipped for doing this kind of work. Layers, Opacity, better magnification, Brightness/Contrast, multiple Undo/Redo, ability to save in Indexed Colour, etc. The main reason I use the Paint/Photoshop combo is because I've been drawing pixel art for almost a decade with these programs, and I've become very comfortable with them. If I were you, I'd absolutely give GIMP a shot since it's free and capable.

Thanks for posting that. This I can follow and seem pretty straight forward but it leads me to my next question and probably the one I'm most concerned about which is scale. Are you just drawing these diagrams and then scaling them afterwards? (ala free transform in photoshop or something?) Or are you drawing them to some sort of scale from the start?

Rule of thumb 1 pixel = 1 meter. traditionally I've found residential floors to be 3 pixels, commercial 4.. but that is subject to change based upon the design of the structure.

Symz, I draw mine to scale from the start (1pixel = 1metre) so the only diagram I submit is a 1:1 gif. So what you see in that first image with the 13 steps is exactly what I'm drawing, no scale change.
However, I'm pretty sure a lot of the diagram artists on this site usually draw the building at some mega-high resolution and then scale it down afterwards.
Edit: Damn you're pumping these out, Fazdeh! Cherryhill looks awesome too!

Hmm, ok. Well, so in my case if I wanted to try the Augustus tower for Windsor, from what I can find it's height is 111m @ 27 floors. I have no idea how wide the building is in terms of hard data.
Note: I'm messing around in paint and find I have to zoom to max to do this 1 pixel = 1 meter scale, this must be a bit of a long process to complete a diagram?

You just have to eyeball the width of the building. I start by drawing a substantial feature of the building (upside-down L-shape on the 13 step), then begin adding the correct number of windows/balconies and adjust the width of the building accordingly. I'm kinda flying by the seat of my pants when I draw my diagrams, I never really know what it'll look like until i'm mostly finished. And yeah, there's a lot of zooming if you choose to draw 1:1.
Maybe try drawing a smaller, more basic building from Windsor first and work your way up. If you post your works-in-progress I'd be happy to try and give helpful criticism. I feel bad for neglecting Windsor. :P

It's ok, you have hometown pride for London and there's nothing wrong with you putting London first. :) I guess maybe I could try something smaller and see how it goes. I am pretty familiar with photoshop, but like I said, I've never done a building diagram and I think it's a bit of a different beast.

It is a different beast. BUT it's oddly addictive.
I just did a diagram of Metropolitan bldg to try and help the cause of the Windsor diagram section.

Sure, I'd love to draw the Delta.
Seriously though, congrats on taking to this so quickly. Basically every drawing of yours is better than the last and you've got your perspective and shading down-pat. Fantastic job on the courthouse as well.

And I agree, your drawings just keep getting better and better FazDeH!
GIMP is a good program. I use Inkscape myself, which is also another free program. Not sure how relevant it is to these drawings though.

Have you been messing around with GIMP's layers, opacity, and layer-masks yet? Those are probably the most important things to learn for drawing quick and easy shadows.
Basically finished the Gartshore Towers. I might still draw the base, but I kind of hate how podiums look on the diagram. I wonder what exactly the rules are when it comes to buildings connected by podium.

I'm actually getting pretty excited about drawing the delta. I have I bit of the outline done already, and I'm looking forward to drawing the armouries and its vines. I also have a bit of the Bell building drawn, so dibs!
You have any buildings you're currently tackling, Fazdeh?

Gartshore looks great! I know what you mean about the connecters, I wouldn't be sure how to handle those
Yes- I've toying around quite a bit about opacity, but haven't really played around with the layers yet.
I'm stoked to see what you can do with the delta... as you can see from my DP, I clearly like the building haha
I have a few UWO buildings done, I'm just waiting for the database to be updated so I can upload them.. I did a fantasy building as well.. I think it'd be interesting to see what you could come up with.
I'm not really sure what else in London is left at this point haha.. I think we may have to start doing diagrams for other cities or trying "vision" buildings,. but that info is always so limited.
haljackey
Apr 20, 2012, 4:39 AM
If you're looking for a vision building for London, Covet Place is a good one. In the Downtown vision report released last year, it occupied the current parking lot of the JLC: http://www.london.ca/Planning_and_Development/Land_Use_Planning/Urban_Design/PDFs/AVisionForDowntownLondon_04JAN2012.pdf
-Another vision is the new city hall from that report... although I doubt there is enough to go on for a drawing.
In addition, the central library tower was canceled, so you can make a drawing for that if you want to.
One and Two London Place, as well as the City Centre towers could use a redrawing, as you guys are simply churning out creations far better looking than they :P. The Renaissance II is not a mirror of the first tower as indicated so it can be drawn as well. The tops of the Talbot Centre towers are now blue... just a quick paint job there.
And yes one fantasy drawing per member per city. Simpseatles does some good hand drawings for London that could be used for fantasy drawings: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?p=5665704#post5665704
Anyways those are just some ideas. Of course you can always do stuff for other cities if you want. The Agustus Tower in Windsor is a good candidate... the addition to Casino Windsor.

Woah, awesome job FazDeH and bolognium! We now have more drawings than sizeable places like Edmonton and Winnipeg. I really like the new courthouse diagram. Keep up the great work!
One building that I would love to see added to the diagram is the other red brick apartment building beside Picton Place. I don't know the name, but it has rounded edges and it's shorter than Picton Place. Maybe someone else has a picture, or knows more about it.
If anyone wanted to try one of my fantasy renderings, like haljackey mentioned, that would be cool to see! You could just guess the height based on the number of floors, and be creative with the colouration (although I do have my own idea when I make them).

Wow, that stretch seriously kicks ass. Pretty easy to see that Windsor was a big deal back in the day. Two Windsor buildings I really want to draw are Royal Windsor Terrace and the Victoria Park Place. I especially want to draw the Royal since I'm in love with its balconies. Assuming someone (Fazdeh) doesn't get to Augustus first, I'll also draw that. I promise the first buildings I draw outside of London will be for Windsor, Symz. :)

Anyone want to tackle Victoria Hospital? It's sure to be one sprawling drawing... I still can't believe all those massive parking structures are there by Wellington... does it really need all that parking?
Yes, it does. I've gone there enough and parking was a bitch. Plus they're moving the regional mental health from oxford and highbury to parkwood, so parkwood is getting one (or few) as well.
