I found an article and it really impressed me. I knew New York was safe but I didn't know it was safe to the point of extremism.

Go head read it:

"The real news is that as late as 1990 there were 503 murders in Manhattan and now we are coming in at about 82, which is an 84-percent decrease."

There were almost as many murders in Manhattan in 1990 as there were in the entire city in 2002. I remember reading somewhere back in the 70's there were as many as 10 murders a day and 50 a week at times.

What is the population of New York County?

Well over 1.5 million!

2001 estimate:

Manhattan: 1.55 million
Bronx: 1.33
Brooklyn: 2.47
Queens: 2.23
Staten Island: 450K

Thank God. Population seems to keep going up and murders (and all crime) keeps going down. Such a change from growing up her in the late 70's and 80's.

How are they squeezing in? Is the average household growing, or are they building higher?

I don't know Hudkina, but they are doing it somehow.

There's new developments in Manhattan everywhere you turn. A 50 story apt. building is pretty average. There are still a lot of places to build - undeveloped lots, parking lots, small buildings in higher zoned areas, buildings that buy air rights, etc. There's a lot more room to grow.

I would love to see Manhattan at 2mil, Brooklyn and Queens at 3 million, Bronx at 2 million, and Statan Island at 1 million. Might be packed, but it also might be better for everyone - more taxes, etc.

11 million in NYC. What are the odds. Maybe 10. They say there are probably close to 1 million illegals in NYC now, so I guess it's not that far fetched. Plus with rezonings of industrial areas, etc. who knows.

Well, in keeping with this thread, if crime keeps going down, population will keep going up, almost guaranteed.

New York's reduction in crime could be resulting, at least in part from its growth in population. Jane Jacobs, a famous urban planner who sharpley critized urban renewal practices in the 1960's and 1970's, said that sidewalks serve an alternative use, which is safety. She mentions that crowded sidewalks are the safest places in the city, because all of the people serve as eyes all watching the actions of each other, therefore volient crime is less likley to happen there. It makes sense, think about it, would you be more likley to be shot on a crowded street, or in a dark alley? With New York now home to more residents than ever before, there are more people out on those sidewalks at all times of the day and night, which is encouraging more businesses to locate in the city and remain open for longer times, only working to create more eyes watching over the streets.

Yes, NYPD has nothing to do with it.

Giuliani's "broken window" philosophy seems to have merit. He believed that if small crimes were handled or prevented, it would stop a mindset of lawlessness and result in a reduction of bigger crimes. When I was a kid, I never paid for the subway and neither did my friends. Try that now - you'll end up in jail.

I remember when Times Square was a dangerous place after dark - now its a place to bring your family.
