I just heared from a friend that NorthLake Mall which is currently under construction is supposed to be the largest mall in North Carolina but the weirdest thing about it was that he also stated that they were going to put a Sak's in that mall too. Do anyone know anything about this...i just need some facts . Also I had no idea that Loui Vitton was opening a store at SouthPark Mall in July. If you heared anything about this let me know?

From what I heard, it's only 1.3 million sq ft, roughly the size of Eastland Mall, and that's not that big.

Someone correct me if I am mistaken, because I am just going on hearsay...

Once the entire complex has been completed, using the original proposal of course, total space would be like 1.8m... which would put it at or above Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, which is presently the largest in the state I think. Actually it is the largest between Atlanta and DC if I'm not mistaken.

That 1.8m would not be all shopping space however, there is some mixed use stuff thrown in there, making the cumulative total 1.8 (or something like that).

Hanes Mall, the largest of two malls in Winston-Salem, is listed at 2.3 million square feet total enclosed space and 1,807,518 GLA as of 1998. Hanes Mall has expanded with a restaurant on one side back in 2000, so that number is slightly higher. I just don't know what size it is with the restuarant. An upscale retailer wants to expand to Hanes in the next ten years and that will include an expansion of the food court.

Mall of Georgia, Atlanta's largest, is 1.7 million GLA. Mall of Georgia tries to count their outdoor retail village, but it doesn't count. The Southeast's largest is Sawgrass Mills in Flordia. It's well over 2 million square feet GLA. Hanes Mall is the largest between D.C.'s Tyson's Corner and Miami's Sawgrass Mills. I've often questioned how long Winston-Salem would keep that title, with Atlanta and Charlotte building new malls.

I can't say I'm that overly excited about malls...

i highly doubt saks would be scouting a 2nd location in Charlotte before they start construction on their first store in south charlotte.

Winston can hang on to that largest mall title for awhile. If Atlanta hasnt beat it yet i doubt someone else will build a larger mall...considering the real heyday of malls has come and gone. theyre dinosaurs now, really.

Hanes Mall underwent a complete multi-million dollar renovation last year, so i'm guessing you haven't been there since then. But I thought the new mall in Durham was larger?

Anyways, a mall is a mall.

If any of you were wondering what happened to me, I have been in London for the last three months! I leave for North Carolina in early December. For some reason, this is the first time I've been able to sign on in the internet cafe since I've been here. But I have been keeping up with everyone's posts. Look for some European threads from me in the not too distant future!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Actually I was at Hanes Mall 3 weeks ago. Ate in the food court and went to a few of the stores. Both my friend and I commented that the mall looked ghetto. That is a surprise that it just went through a renovation, it really does look dated on the inside.

Hanes Mall wasn't ghetto about 10 years ago during my last visit, but I suppose a lot of things can happen over that period of time.

LOL, you guys are crazy.

Well, MY friend and I commented on how Hanes did NOT look ghetto, and that cancels out you and your friend...

Then...we drove to Charlotte and ate in the food court and shopped around at SouthPark, and we both thought it looked really really really ghetto...

So there ya have it...the scientific mall ghetto test.

LOL!

My mall is better than your mall. That must mean my city is better than your city! ;)

I have not been to Hanes Mall in a while. Worth checking out again. Though, not this time of year!

I personally don't like malls much and avoid them at all cost.
But I had to go into Hanes Mall recently and saw all the "renovations"
I miss the old Hanes Mall with all of the trees and fountains and recessed seating areas.
Now it just looks like any generic mall in any generic town.

xman, I agree, The food court at SouthPark is ghetto...however it is being moved to a whole new part of the mall to open next year.

When I went to Hanes Mall last month it was clean, however the design and floor/wall matierals had a very 80s (ghetto) feel to it...thats why I was surprised to learn that it had just been renovated.

Personally I don't really care to see this mall being built (I live only 5-6 miles from it) It would seem to be redundant, but I am sure that it will be instantly mobbed the day it opens. Construction is proceeding amazingly fast.

Southpark seems so small temporarily b/c Sears has been demolished for Galyans and the new wing with Nordstrom hasnt opened. Sucks that it couldnt be ready for the Christmas season. As far as malls go, Southpark will be one of the better ones anywhere. Its got good access from all sides, a nice symphony park, and even nice sidewalks/fountains/landscaping around the perimeter. Compare it to Carolina Place or most other suburban malls and it looks awesome.

Personally, I actually drove up to Birkdale from Southeast Charlotte to do some shopping last weekend. Its the only decent outdoor shopping district in the Charlotte metro.
