BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Virginia Beach’s Pharrell Williams collected a leading six Grammy nominations Thursday while Portsmouth rapper Missy Elliott and Kempsville High alum Chad Hugo gathered five nods.

Among the nominations for Hugo and Williams were three each for their work as The Neptunes production team.

R&B singer Beyonce and rappers Jay-Z and OutKast each had six nominations to join Williams as frontrunners in the 46th annual Grammy Awards, to be handed out Feb. 8 on CBS.

Last year The Neptunes received no nominations because none of the record companies that they produced songs for submitted their names.

Pharrell Williams, whose playful falsetto has provided the hook for numerous hits the past few years, received two nominations for best rap/sung collaboration: He performed with Snoop Dogg and Uncle Charlie Wilson on “Beautiful” and is also featured with Jay-Z on The Neptunes’ single “Frontin’.”

Pharrell also is competing against himself for best rap song for his songwriting collaboration on “Beautiful” and the Jay-Z song “Excuse Me, Miss.”

Unlike the other leading nominees, Pharrell — rhymes with "sell" — is not a household name.

Yet he had just as much of a presence on the music charts — or perhaps more — than any of his counterparts this year. He wrote or co-wrote hits for artists like Justin Timberlake; and, along with cohort Hugo, he produced for a variety of artists, including Mary J. Blige and LL Cool J.

This year, after helping to the announce the Grammy nominations, Pharrell said the awards made him feel "validated."

"It's recognition for all the hard work that we put into it. And if we never win anything and never get nominated again I can go to a book somewhere in somebody's library and see our name — I'm validated."

Eminem, Evanescence, 50 Cent, Ricky Skaggs, Justin Timberlake, Luther Vandross and the late Warren Zevon also had five nominations each.

Beyonce and her boyfriend, Jay-Z, were among the contenders for record of the year for “Crazy in Love,” along with the Black Eyed Peas-Justin Timberlake collaboration “Where Is the Love?” Other nominees were Coldplay’s “Clocks,” Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and OutKast’s “Hey Ya.”

Album-of-the-year contenders were Elliott’s “Under Construction,” “Fallen” by Evanescence, “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” by OutKast, “Justified” by Timberlake and “Elephant” by The White Stripes.

I'm surprised another local celeb, Timbaland wasn't mentioned. He make all the beats for Missy among other popular artists.
