The Cavs attendance had been going down, but with LeBron James, it has increased quite significantly, like at least 5,000+ over last season's 11,500 per game.

The Jazz have been very consistent over the past 20 years in attendance, but what do you expect with two hall of famers playing together for 18 years straight on the team.

This year, the first post John and Karl era, the Jazz aren't doing too bad (conisdering ESPN predicted they would set the all time NBA loss record at 73... shows what the "experts" know... Ive never respected that title with any sportswriter) currently theyre 16-13 and Andre Kirilenko is becoming a superstar.

The Jazz are the 3rd youngest team in the league with an average age of 23.6 (at the start of the season) and theyre going to become a powerhouse again in the next couple of years...

haha, oh yeah about theyre attendance...... theyre still selling out 93% of the 20,000 (19,911) seat Delta Center this year, I think their average attendance is about 18,250ish still

New Orleans and Memphis have low attendance to have new teams in their markets.

But, Atlanta has to have the worst fan support in all major sports.

Why does Atlanta even have an NBA franchise?

They have a great baseball team but, they can't sale-out in season or post season.

The NFL is only doing well in attendance this year and last in Atlanta, because of one player (Mike Vick).

Well, one exception...the NHL is doing well in Atlanta.

SA went from 22,000 to 18,000 because of the arena change.

The Alamodome's basketball seating allowed 21,000 seats while the SBC Center seats 18,500.

They say Atlanta suffers from attendance because of 2 factors.
Weather- good weather often keeps people out of many events.
Traffic- after fighting traffic people don't want to go back out.
I don't know how true any of that is- I live 1 mile from the Braves stadium and go every week. I only go to Falcons games when someone has a free ticket because it's too much $$$. and they sucked for so long I'm not convinced. I'm not a hoops fan but have been to 2 hockey games.I think attendance is lame for many events in this town including music, art and other events. It's a wierd city sometimes. Seems people shop, dine & garden here more than anything.

Wanna know something funny about the Jazz? When they moved here in 1979 from New Orleans, all the media said that their stay in Salt Lake City would be short. Basically, it was a layover until the next big market opened up.

But by 84 the team began winning and the Salt Palace was always sold out. So they stayed and of course in 1991 moved into the Delta Center (19,911).

Throughout the 90s the Jazz averaged 19,000+ - that is amazing. Even now, with a team that has a bunch of no names, they're averaging 18,155, 7th in the NBA.

...You know, I was wondering the same thing why Vancouver moved out, they were bringing in more fans in Vancouver than Memphis! Is it because of the Canadian dollar vs. the American Dollar why they left (meaning that 17,000 canadian fans, as recent at 1999, paying canadian prices vs 14,500 fans paying american prices??) :???:

keep in ming the griz were caught counting approx. 6000 give aways per game as "paid attendence" in vancouver (mark cuban broke that story). now the griz no longer count "paid attendence" like the rest of the league but actual attendence.

EX. that New Orleans figure is way bloated. that may be paid attendance - but that is definitely not actual attendence.

I'd be shocked if 8k per game actually show up in Atlanta, even though 12k is "paid"

Oh yeah... don't forget FedEx. They're paying the Griz 5 mil. a year for the next 20 years just for being here. They didn't have that in vancouver.

I just can't wait for the NBA to return to Charlotte next year, so that everyone can see that the true problem with the hornets was not Charlotte, but in fact those two jackass owners.

I agree with you. The history of the team shows that Charlotte's NBA team did better than really almost any other franchise has ever done.

Just think if the city had not had such a bad relationship with the Hornets' owner, what it would be like today in Charlotte. The Hornets might have had a home in downtown Charlotte instead of that crapy arena with the current low attendance in New Orleans.

And you know once they move into the new downtown Charlotte arena...things are going to be fun in Charlotte.

I thought it was because so many Atlantans aren't from the area and show no support for the city's teams? It can be also noted that many fans in Atlanta are very fairweather.

I just can't wait for the NBA to return to Charlotte next year, so that everyone can see that the true problem with the hornets was not Charlotte, but in fact those two jackass owners.

hey, arent they building a new arena in Charlotte? If so, what is happening to the old one? (wasnt it called the Hive, or something)

And as for the Hawks, i hate seeing teams that arent respected in their areas. I wish the Clippers and Hawks would move somewhere like Birmingham or Louisville or Omaha... basically somewhere where they would be the only major sports franchise.

I thought it was because so many Atlantans aren't from the area and show no support for the city's teams? It can be also noted that many fans in Atlanta are very fairweather.

Yes, Atlanta does have the largest group of fairweather fans.

It could be a factor that Atlanta is populated with people who come from cities that have pro teams and those people may keep their support with their hometown team.

But, there are a few other cities that might end up this way too in the future if the population continues to boom in their region. Because their metro areas are also populated with a large population from other states. Like: Charlotte (NBA, NFL), Raleigh (NHL), Orlando (NBA), Nashville (NFL, NHL), Houston (NFL, NBA, MLB), Dallas (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB), Memphis (NBA) and maybe even Denver (NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA).

Yes, a new arena is currently u/c in Uptown Charlotte. It is to be ready for the 2005 season, which means the Bobcats will play their inaugural year at the old Charlotte Coliseum. Once they move into the new arena in 2005, the old coliseum site is expected to be converted into either residential or office development...people are still ironing out the details on that topic.

In addition to the new arena, Charlotte is also renovating their old convention center to become an entertainment complex right near the arena, expected to be ready for the arena's opening in 2005.

Here are some renderings...

Arena:

(most of us agree that this initial design is rather tacky. hopefully it will change by the time renovation begins)

I hope the building will look better than that rendering of the entertainment complex because the rendering looks a little cluttered. I think the architect got carried away with it.
