Yes but if people can read then they will see that the tower is actually U/C in this thread.

Great pic staff. The glass looks kind of dirty and it would seem like they wouldn't be able to finish cleaning by Sep. 1 but after watching the Opening Ceremony in Beijing, I bet workers will have time to relax before the opening day.

They must be referring to the tower's roof height, which is higher than any other 'completed' building. Taipei 101 still remains tallest in the world to architectural spire. Sears Tower is still tallest building in the world to pinnacle height (antenna mast).

The Shanghai World Financial Center, standing 492 meters tall and also nicknamed the "Wall Street of China," the biggest skyscraper in Chinese mainland and the third-tallest in the world after Burj Dubai and Taipei 101, was officially inaugurated on Thursday. (Xinhua/Liu Ying)

SHANGHAI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai World Financial Center, the biggest skyscraper in Chinese mainland and the third-tallest in the world after Burj Dubai and Taipei 101, was officially inaugurated on Thursday.

The 492-meter-high building is in the Lujiazui area of Pudong District, the "Wall Street of China," overlooking the Huangpu River. It covers an area of 381,600 square meters. It has 101 floors above ground and three floors underground, according to its builder, the Shanghai Construction Group.

The first two floors are commercial with the third to fifth floors for conference centers. The seventh to 77th floors will house offices. The 79th to 93rd floors will be the Park Hyatt Shanghai hotel, which is expected to test run on Monday.

The 94th to 100th floors are an observatory for sightseeing and will be open to tourists on Saturday. The observatory on the 100thfloor at 474 meters above ground is the tallest of its kind in the world.

It is expected to receive 3 million tourists annually. The admission price ranges from 110 yuan (16 U.S dollars) to 150 yuan.

The construction of the skyscraper began in 1997 but was suspended amid the southeast Asian financial crisis. The construction resumed in 2003.

"Few people thought Pudong would be a financial center when we decided to invest here," said Minoru Mori, the founder of Mori Building, the skyscraper's investor. "The successful launching of the Shanghai World Financial Center proved Shanghai would be definitely a top commercial city in Asia."

Taking the measure of the SWFC Steady in the wind

By Liang Yiwen and Lu Feiran | 2008-8-29 | NEWSPAPER EDITION

SHANGHAI'S newest skyscraper is protected by high-tech equipment against earthquakes, high winds, fires and terrorist attacks.

Tests validated by the Seismic Safety Office of China's Ministry of Construction showed that the Shanghai World Financial Center can withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 9, well above Shanghai's required 7-level.

The building is supported by 2,271 piles drilled deep into the ground, and a 4.5-meter-thick slab sits atop the pile foundation.

Inverted-trapezoid wind tunnels were installed in the rectangular rooftop opening to reduce wind-induced roof pressure.

Two 150-ton counterweights were installed on the 90th floor to reduce building sway and control vibration caused by high winds.

To ensure the safety of the building and the people inside, the center uses smart-card locks on each floor, and hand luggage will be screened by metal detectors mounted on the entrance to the observatory. Seven floors can be used as evacuation floors in the event of fires.

94, 97, 100F - Sky Walks

THE Shanghai World Financial Center's three observatory decks will open to the public at 2pm tomorrow.

They are located on the 94th, 97th and 100th floor, which soars 474 meters above the ground. Visitor volume is expected to reach 3 million a year.

Sightseers will pay 150 yuan (US$22) to visit all three decks. For those who will be happy with a slightly lower view, the cost is 110 yuan to visit the 94th floor and 97th floor, and 100 yuan for just the 94th floor.

The 100th floor, 55 meters long and with a partially transparent glass walkway that affords dramatic sights, is the highest observatory deck in the world. It eclipses the city's other main venues for panoramic views, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower at 263 meters and the 88th floor of Jin Mao Tower at 341 meters.

Among the building's other features, the 97th floor deck has a glass ceiling that can be opened to bring in fresh air. The 94th floor observatory, which has an 8-meter-high ceiling, is a versatile space that can be used for events and exhibitions.

79-93F - Hotel

The Park Hyatt Shanghai, which occupies the 79th to 93rd floors, is scheduled to open on September 1.

The hotel dwarfs the former world's highest inn, the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, which is located on the 53rd to the 87th floor of the neighboring Jin Mao Tower.

The Park Hyatt also refreshes several other records, such as the world's highest swimming pool on the 85th floor and Century Avenue, the world's highest restaurant, bar and private dining room on floors 91 through 93.

The restaurant, which will open at the end of October, will have a minimum banquet charge of 600 yuan per person. Room prices will range from 5,000 yuan to 88,000 yuan per night in the hotel's 174 guest rooms, which sets another record.

7-77F - Offices

Each floor comprises 3,300 square meters of office space, with ceiling heights of 2.8 meters plus a 15-centimeter raised ceiling.

Connected by fiber-optic cables from a wide range of carriers, the office area features comprehensive security systems and facilities that include back-up power generators, chilled water supply and 24-hour tenant-managed air conditioning. Mobile phones can be used in all areas of the building.

Daily rent is US$3 per square meter. So far, 45 percent of the office space has been rented out, and the occupancy rate is expected to reach 90 percent in a year.

28-29F - Media Center

In addition to its role as a financial center and high-end hotel, the skyscraper aims to function as an information exchange hub. A media center located on the 28th and 29th floor features a full range of audio-visual facilities, including a television studio, a conference hall and an upscale lounge space.

3-5F - Forum Space

The 3,000-square-meter Forum Space is divided into meeting rooms of various sizes. The largest, at 800 square meters, is designed to host international conferences. All conference rooms can be divided into 18 separate areas depending on the configuration options selected.

B2-B1F, 2-3F - Shopping Mall

Fifty shopping and restaurant outlets including Starbucks, Xiaonanguo and Tokyo Dining will be opened in a commercial area covering 10,000 square meters. About 75 percent of the tenants will be restaurants and cafes to meet the needs of the building's office workers.

B1-B3, 1F - Parking

The building offers underground parking for 1,100 cars.

The parking lot is open 24 hours and charges 10 yuan for up to an hour and 5 yuan for each 30 minutes thereafter.

High-rise fashion fete gets WFC in fire-code fix

By Dong Hui and Liang Yiwen | 2008-9-19 | NEWSPAPER EDITION

THE new half-kilometer-high World Financial Center, mainland China's tallest skyscraper and the third tallest building in the world, is under investigation by the city's fire control authority for violating regulations.

"The center might receive its first fine notice on fire control," said Zhou Meiliang, media coordinator of the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau.

The WFC held a dinner party on its 100th floor on September 8, but the floor's fire-control facilities only allow sightseeing activities, the bureau said.

The party was thrown by Hermes, a high-end French fashion brand, which gave a men's winter collection fashion show in the building the following day, authorities reported.

"The sightseeing hall on the 100th floor was registered for sightseeing use," Zhou said. "The design of fire control facilities in the hall differs from that for food and beverage service. The fire control facilities may not be efficient."

On the afternoon of September 8, the bureau sent officers to the WFC to warn them about the violation, but the party went ahead regardless. The center may now be fined up to 200,000 yuan (US$29,265), according to Zhou.

The sales department of the WFC said it had stopped booking events that involved serving food and drinks on the 100th floor.

The tower is a popular tourist spot, offering visitors an unparalleled views of the city.

The center has received 77 tour groups since it opened to groups on Wednesday. Individual visitors have been able to visit the tower since August 30.

On its first open day, the tower received more than 4,000 visitors. This number soared to 6,000 on the second day. About 20,000 people visited the tower during last weekend's Mid-Autumn Festival.

Are those just reflections or are the windows near the top in varying shades?

I'm fairly sure it's a window-washing boom.

By the way, can someone confirm for me the proper way to pronounce "Lujiazui?" Is it "loo-jee-ah-ZWEE?"

^Thanks, giallo!

That seems a bit confusing, though... ui=way... I blame my American public schooling. There's no emphasis on a particular syllable?

Is that "way" closer to weigh or to the French huit?

It's Pinyin pronunciation, which can be somewhat different from standard English pronunciation of the same letters.

The 'way' is very close to the English 'weigh', but the z sound in pinyin actually sounds more like dz, so zui is pronounced dz-weigh.

:previous: Muppet, that shot is HOT!
