Where did you get all these from? #9 and #10 are of the SOM design, with the Michell's truss structure. If the competition has already happened, I can post some better renderings?
There is also more to this competition than just the tower. The program really pushed for sustainable designs, which is one huge advantage SOM has over many of the other firms IMO.
^That prism tower is one of the better ones, unfortunately their site planning is terrible. They should have moved the tower to the other side of the site. Lots of floors stare directly at the Jin Mao/SWFC and vice versa. great if you love skyscrapers.. terrible if you are trying to rent out space.
Edit: actually, now that I look at it more closely, they shaped their tower so as to try and look past the other towers... but it doesn't help the views from the other towers.

Screw it: here is a teaser. it doesn't give anything away you can't tell from the other images, just is far clearer. It helps having some of the best tower engineers in the world on your team. The other designs I have seen so far have got nothing on this, I think.

Thanks for that rendering, Pandemonious.
Looks really massive - how tall is it, approximately? One of the best designs for sure.
All the other renderings are taken from a SSC thread, and originally they're from skyscrapers.cn.

The program called for ~350,000 sqm tower floor area. Ours was very close to that number. I think the podium ended up being almost another 100,000 sqm. The heights for these towers should all be in the 560-600m range. I don't recall the exact height number, but I think it ended up at about maybe 575 m structural and 600 m to the edge of the crown.
Also, the reason it is so massive is because the slenderness ratio of our tower is actually constructible, unlike quite a few of those chinese designs were (well, with any non-dubai-like budget anyway).
I believe we hit almost 8:1, which is very slender (The thin face of the John Hancock Center is even only about a 6.5:1 ratio). I think it would be classified as a composite structure, since it has the steel michell's truss that transfers the wind loads into three concrete mega columns (bldg is triangular in plan) and that all works in conjunction with the concrete core. By code, I believe, it is required to have more than one lateral structural system since Shanghai is in a heavy typhoon area. The key here is that it was made to look beautiful and very organic looking to emulate the drastic organic growth the city of shanghai (and China itself) has seen in the last decade.

Thanks for the info, Pandemonious.
575-600 meters, even if taking Burj Dubai into the consideration, is damn tall.
I'm trying to imagine how this tower would look in real life, but it's hard given that it looks so 'impossibly' massive and tall. :)
I'm looking forward to more renderings, if you feel like posting them.
Pandemonious
Sep 28, 2006, 6:32 PM
The Burj above ~550 m is basically just a very thin steel structure to house communications equipment with a then enormously tall pole to reach the 808m figure. Skyline wise, the Z3 tower gives Burj a run for its money, plus it has the two other tallest buildings in the city across the street from it.

Well, it is triangular in plan, so just the nature of a triangle gives you the largest building faces for the same area. Compared with a building square in plan, the triangular shape will give you building faces that are 33% larger, with the same size floorplate. That is why it is so efficient structurally. Lots of studies have been done about this, and a triangular plan with the mega columns in the corner is about as efficient as possible.

Well, judging from that render it doesn't look like any of the faces of jin mao or SWFC are directly facing the tower. Agree though, it would be better if it was moved to the back corner.
Anyway seems fairly similar to the russia tower, both are around the same height and the designs are a bit similar.
BTW I thought the burj will still have about 10 habitable floors in that steel structure.
Pandemonious
Sep 28, 2006, 7:40 PM
Define "habitable"? They are real floors, and in theory people can go inside them, but I think are solely for communications purpose and are VERY small in floor area.
Also, where that tower sits, the entire southern face of Jin Mao stares directly at that tower. Trust me, I had to help build a huge foam site model of Pudong as part of the project. We decided placing the tower there was bad planning, and the whole "green belt" concept for the area will be rendered pointless anyway since supposedly the part adjacent to Jin Mao is slated for development.

Sep 28, 2006, 8:18 PM
^^ Well I thought the concrete part ends at 575m and around the 152nd floor. I think they've said there are office floors up to the 160th so that leaves a few mechanical ones left.
Maybe the render is wrong, or I'm just stupid but it looks like jin mao just about faces the gap. I won't try to argue though, it's pointless and you're most likely right anyway :D

Does anyone know anything about this project?
I was browsing around in Copenhagen based architect firm BIG's website, and found it. It's called 'People's Building', and is supposed to be part of the World Expo in 2010.
I like the fact that it depicts the character 人 (ren = people), and the overall design.
On the website it says that it's status is 'ongoing', but I have no idea how to interpret that.

I'm guessing both, since they already have plans to build the towers on this site. Considering how close this project is to the line 1 station, I'm guessing this will become a station where the 9 and 1 intersect. Anyway, that site is bleedin' enormous.

Plot B4-2 (just next to the Gran Mélia Hotel)
Signs of activities there ! The only rendering that surfaced out for this plot was a disappointing midrise glass cube (about 20 floors) years ago.
Yeah, this was:
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3117/lujiazuifinancialcentreun3.jpg
However, since this project is soooo old, I've been wondering wether they have changed the design very often. Now, look at this...
According to ss.cn, there is a new proposal for that plot. Here is the link, I'm not sure what are they saying, but in the second page they posted a picture of that plot, so... I suppose they are talking about it. The render looks quite promising. Anybody could translate the info?

Check this article published in august 2006: http://sh.focus.cn/votehouse/2404.html
Here is a project called 绿洲中环中心(绿洲湖畔花园二期)社区网, something like Oasis Lakeside Garden. I saw these renders long time ago, but before today I thought they might be just another proposal for Shangri-La Puxi hotel. Now I wonder if they are a second phase of the Oasis Skyway Garden or so. Take notice that the article has been published quite recently, last august.

Official news from SHKP projects in Shanghai :
NEW PROJECT : Shanghai’s Huai Hai Zhong Road
The Huai Hai Zhong Road Lot 3 project takes full advantage of its linkage with a new MTR station which will form a transport hub for the interchange of three MTR lines, one operating and other two under construction. By opening up the basement retail into the combined station concourse, the project will capture an uninterrupted flow of railway commuters. Apart from being the most sought-after retail mall, the project also comprises grade A office space and luxurious residential apartments. The commercial and the residential elements will be integrated by an elegant yet vibrant façade, making it a coherent comprehensive development.

More details about the Wei Fong project (by the Huangpu river, in front of the Shimao Riviera Garden)
Another developing project in Shanghai is the Wei Fong residential development. The project, with gross floor area of about 1.7 million square feet, is located at a prime site on the waterfront of Huangpu River. With residential development, serviced apartment, clubhouse and other facilities, it will be the most deluxe property in Lujiazui of Pudong. The buildings are grouped in curvilinear form, and residential blocks are stepped in height to capture the best views of the Huangpu river and the Bund. Its unique exterior building design, facing Huangpu River, makes it as an icon of Pudong district.

If you look closely, you can see four buildings rising behind the yellow crane. They are a mixture of office, hotel and convention space. I'll make it my mission in the next couple of weeks to get an aerial and try to get on to the actually site.

It's bloom time in architecture
By Li Xinran | 2008-6-23 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
JUST when you thought that Shanghai could not possibly become more architecturally state of the art, a company comes up with a trump card.
Picture a 68-story building in the shape of the bud of the city's floral emblem, the magnolia. Add to that a Broadway-style theater, an international hospital, an exhibition center and the only international school in the downtown area.
But wait, there's more.
The new will meet the old at ground level where shikumen, or stone-gate houses, will line traditional alleyways that will also incorporate fashion stores, museums and cafes.
Shui On Land Ltd developed the city's Xintiandi with the same old-meets-new theme. The 68-story project will be Xintiandi's sister ... Xintiandi's very big sister.
The Hong Kong-listed Shui On plans to complete Xintiandi II in the Taiping Lake area in the next seven to 10 years, directly opposite its smaller namesake.
The new skyscraper will stand near the business area of Xizang Road M. and construction is expected to begin before the end of the year, Shui On says.
The stone-gate alleys along Dongtai Road will be restored to their original splendor and incorporate antique stores and small museums, according to Shui On officials.
The 52-hectare project to rebuild the Taiping Lake area is expected to become part of a secondary central business district. Two six-star hotels - the Jumeirah and the Conrad - are already earmarked to be opened in the area in November.
Shui On also unveiled a new wishing fountain in the northern part of Xintiandi over the weekend.
The fountain, designed by Chinese-Dutch sculptress Wu Jingru, features images of three traditional Chinese gods "Fu," "Lu" and "Shou" - signifying luck, fortune and health.
Wu said the three bronze sculptures, each more than two meters tall, are a fusion of traditional Chinese beliefs and a Western fountain.

Disneyland in Pudong a 'done deal'
Source: Shanghai Daily | 2008-6-29 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
YEARS of negotiations between the Shanghai government and Walt Disney Co appear to have clinched a deal for a huge Disneyland to be built in Pudong.
The official announcement is expected to be made after the Beijing Olympics in August.
An exclusive report published by the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po newspaper yesterday said the park will cover about 10 square kilometers of land - about eight times the size of Hong Kong Disneyland.
It will be near Pudong's Chuansha Town, about 20 minutes' drive from Pudong International Airport.
Earlier media reports had said the Shanghai government preferred it to be built on the city's island county Chongming.
Yesterday's report quoted unnamed people involved in the discussion, saying Shanghai Disneyland won't follow the Hong Kong model, in which the Hong Kong government leased the land to Disney.
The Shanghai government will provide the land, finance construction, and own the majority stake in the park, the report said.
Management rights will be given to Disney, which will also get royalties and a percentage of operational income.
The report said the park will open "at the earliest possible time" in 2012, when about one-third of the park will be completed.
"Considering inflation, the budget to build the park, excluding the land cost, should rise to about 40 billion yuan (US$5.7 billion), from the earlier estimate of 30 billion yuan," an unnamed "expert involved in the appraisal of the project" was quoted as saying.
In March, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said the local government had applied to the central government to build a Disneyland.
It would be the third Disneyland in Asia after Japan and Hong Kong.
Walt Disney Co signed a statement of intent to build a Disneyland on the Chinese mainland in 2002, and then set up a venture to develop it.
The plan was put on hold because of concerns that the Hong Kong park, opened in 2005, would suffer.

Building lights may be used to issue weather alerts
By Yang Lifei | 2008-7-3 | ONLINE EDITION
SHANGHAI is planning to release weather information by changing the color of lights on some landmark buildings, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Meteorological departments are working with some district governments including Xuhui and Baoshan to promote the weather warnings with lighting, Tang Xu, director of the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, told the newspaper.
Tang said they would make use of some skyscrapers such as the Grand Gateway in Xujiahui, Xuhui. Its rooftop lighting is bright and can be seen in the distance.
``The white lights can be changed into other colors matching the weather warning alerts such as blue, yellow, orange and red. Different colors indicate the weather will change,'' the director told the newspaper.
However, the plan is considered only as another way to provide weather forecasts to the public. Media reports, LED boards, SMS messages, the weather hotline and the Website www.soweather.com/pubweb/ will still be the primary ways for residents to get forecasts, the report said.
Tang added that the city meteorological departments were trying hard to have weather forecasts displayed on all 25,000 public LED boards throughout the city in the near future.

I like that idea. Now you can just look up and see how the weather will be instead of finding it over a computer or a tv.
Anyways, I don't like that there's going to be a Disneyland in Pudong. I actually don't like the idea of a Disneyland in Shanghai. Six Flags should get the plot.
