I am unable to participate due to extreme demands and priority projects.

That's right. At this point, its hard to tell what will be more impressive, the construction of the new WTC, or the combined wave of construction that will take place on 33rd street from the Manhattan Mall (west of 7th) all the way to the Hudson. We're talking massive redevelopment that will change the face of both Midtown and Downtown.

The way I see, in NYC Manhattan alone is on the verge of not one, not two, but THREE World Trade Center scale developments SIMULTANEOUSLY, AND two WHOLE NEW NYC-scale "boulevards of steel canyons": 8th Avenue, happening NOW, and of course the whole Westside development. And, did I mention a possible/probable supertall on 32nd street, to boot?

That's just what's been announced to date: and the announcements have been coming fast and furious, haven't they? I think they generate their own excitement, creating a critical mass for even more growth.

Meanwhile, the outlying boroughs and Jersey City are suddenly sprouting their own quite impressive skylines to compliment it all.

If this was some 3rd world or newly developed country's city, that would be one thing... but the fact it's happening in what already can probably be considered THE epitome of urbanity is just quite astonishing. The fact it's suddenly happening there within merely a few years of speculation that the skyscraper was essentially dead in NYC is nothing short of astounding.

In part you can attribute that to the geography. Manhattan is a small island with no where to build but up. Then you could say that the love for NYC has never really died. People still want to invest in this city. It's just too great for it to die off and be left behind.

Yes, an incredible amount of skyscrapers are in the pipeline. Let's hope for some serious height and compelling design on the west side....it's basically our last chance.

And don't forget the con-ed site! That's about 5,000 apartments in itself.

sfcity1
May 16, 2007, 5:51 AM
It will be nice if and when all these proposals come true. The WTC turned out for the better, in my opinion, as opposed to the original winning plan. This may influence the rest of these proposed developments. The Con Ed site plans just keeps to seem getting worse though. And Ratner developing the atlantic yards miss brooklyn decided to chop off height of Miss Brooklyn without even being asked to get his plan approved. Shoot me.

Looking way ahead here, what happens once the far West Side is built out? That's pretty much it for land on Manhattan, so where do you build more offices? Perhaps then will be when downtown Brooklyn and LIC finally start getting utilized to their potential.

NYC isn't going to just give up all that tax revenue.. they'll find somewhere to build within the city limits; it's a just a question of where.

The thing is, Manhattan really won't run out of land, just unbuilt land. The island is mostly covered with old buildngs (we're not talking about the lowrise neighborhoods like the Village), and in 20 or 30 years, most of those will have outlived practical uses. There's more to Manhattan than people think.

I think a good place for the city to build up is Downtown Staten Island. It's small now, but it's only a 25 minute ride across the bay, and there is plenty of space. I mean pleanty. It's aready rising, with some new 150 foot buildings. I know that's short, but it can only get taller.

So far it looks like the most impressive side is, surprisingly (at least to me), the slanted backside. If anything, I expected it to make the building seem squatter, thus shittier. However, few sights in Times Square, which is already one of the world's most impressive man-made spaces, bring such surprise and awe when you look down past the front row of tall vertical towers and then see one of them in the background, one of the largest too, suddenly slanting upwards at an impressive angle. If anything, the unimpressive skin adds to the effect. If it were some crazy transparent glass or Gehry-style metal contraption, that would be almost expected, but seeing a rather dull 70's style facade suddenly break off and climb at a sharp angle is a sight to behold.

CoolCzech

It looks like a another skyscraper that will fit into the midtown crowd. It is slightly taller than its immediate neighbors. The Hearst is still my favorite midtown NYC office building. I don't care for the spires on a flat top, it reminds me of injection needles.

Thanks. The views from the Top of the Rock are always great. But when this new spire rises,
it will be one of the best views in the city. What the New York skyline is supposed to look like....

^ nyguy,

it totally beats the ESB. I think their deck might be a little too high and you're too far south. I took a zoomed in pic of their observation deck from mine and it was crowded with people.

The steel rises faster than the core when scrapers are constructed in New York. I believe it has something to do with the unions.
