Looks like the northwest corner, but I agree it's very confusing. The crown looks stubbier and shaped slightly differently in that model...

Anyone know how recent that model is?

Oh, and the atrium has been long gone. Take a look at the current views from Bryant Park, and you'll see the floor plates extending all the way to the edge of where the facade will be on the corner where the atrium was supposed to exist. The building was/is fetching astronomical $/sqf so they maximized office space.

The model is taken from the CURRENT Cook & Fox website!!!(Architechts)

Maybe this the way is gonna look!!!

Not counting the spire, Bank of America will be average height and will just blend in with the surrounding towers.

The spire will reach for the sky.

Even as far as just the tower portion, it will definetly you'll definetly be able to see that in size it is in between the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building terms of height. It's still massive at 900 some feet unlike the Chrysler which really starts to look thin even several feet below the start of the spire...

 Yes, agreed!

With the various videos I have filmed (plus my future film projects), New York is right up there.

My projects involve showcasing the exciting towers that define a great city and New York is really shaping up.

It has been years since I've done a really good video of New York - now with Hearst Magazine Tower, the NY Times Tower, Bank of America, 15 CPS and many, many others, this is a very exciting time for my fav city. ;)

Building updates and comments about its design are fine, but don't get off topic.

Does anyone know how they will keep the angled sides clean? The glass they are using does not look good when dirty, and the angled parts have the potential to become VERY dirty. Does the unique shape of the tower require custom window cleaning machinery? Walking by BoA this morning, these random thoughts popped into my head.

I like the stone wall that will form the rear wall of the lobby. It is a nice counterpoint to the glass. What do you all think of it (Carlos has posted pics of it in the recent past).

Interestingly, I have read on this thread that this is a concrete core building, but that the ironworkers or the union insists that the core be built behind the steel. But I came across this, and it seems that the core following steel is done to < drum roll > save money and time.

Here is the article. 7 WTC was also done the same way.

http://enr.construction.com/images/2004/040726-14c.jpg

Unlike most New York City high-rises, the steel will lead core construction. This strategy was developed by Severud in the 1970s, but never implemented in New York until recently, says DePaola.

The construction manager selected the approach because frame construction is about one-third quicker, says Joseph L. Ross, executive vice president of Tishman Construction Corp. of New York. Tishman also is using the approach on Seven WTC and says the strategy relies on the use of climbing forms, which allow the core to keep pace with the steel.

dont get me wrong this is a beautiful building, i really love the design n all

but i dont get the "pole" sticking out of it from the top that suppose to be a spire.

a real spire is something like on 1 Liberty Place, or the Chrslyer Building

this pole is just an excuse to get to 1000 feet, but in reality the building is really 940 something

sfcity1

This is a nice building. But any way you slice it, 400+ feet of unoccupiable height does not sound very good. It seems to be a trend though.

Thank you for that original comment. I never heard anything so fresh and full of insight.

Do tell, what epiphany do you wish to share with us over the fact that, to the rest of the world, 1,000 feet is just 303 meters or so? Does it mean 1,000feet is a meaningless number?

Snoshredder21
Aug 17, 2007, 1:11 AM
i knew someone was gonna have a problem with my comment, didnt know someone was gonna be that much of a prick about it though, thank you

shoulda said the pole is just an excuse to get to 1200 feet, would that have been better.

anyway.

For me, the height is not even the issue here, its the design of building. i love the rest of the building. its the issue of them putting a stick on the top when they could have probably substituted that "spire" with more floors and a better design at the top. id rather see the roof or a real spire that extends up to or closer to 1200ft. its just my opinon.

a refresher....

Design Intent Design inspired by famed New York Crystal Palace, the first glass and steel building in America, erected in Bryant Park in 1853, along with cultural influences from New York City’s classic skyscrapers

Traces the history of the site while representing the city’s optimism of its future through the suggestion of the architectural forms

Embraces and is specific to building’s unique urban context

Building’s base is derived from and enriches the site’s complex pedestrian and transit circulation patterns

Verticality of building’s massing, spiraling up to the tip of the tallest spire, responds to the Midtown Manhattan skyline, while the configuration of the base addresses the local pedestrian and transportation thoroughfares

Design Highlights

Crystalline skyscraper

Crystal rises from its base with sculptural facets that infer movement and allow for varied views around the neighboring towers

The faceted crystal design is complimented by both the clear glass curtain wall and the tautness of the skin’s detail

Crisp folds and precise vertical lines are animated by the movement of the sun and moon

The south-facing facet turns to address its prominent relationship with Bryant Park

Dimensions

2,100,000 total square feet
1,100,000 square feet for Bank of America
1,000,000 square feet of office space above
50,000 square foot reconstructed Henry Miller Theater
945 feet tall, 54 stories

Fabb

spiraling up to the tip of the tallest spire

I didn't notice the spiraling effect. Even though I can see it now, it seems to me that the facade is inspired by a mineral, randomly faceted pattern.

Having just returned from a visit to the home island for an interview (which went very well!!) I can say I have changed my opinion on this tower. I was ahppy to see the added height but wasnt impressed by what i had seen. In person the glass looks phenominal, the contrast of the lighter and darker colors make for a plaid like effect. I think the lobby and courtyard area will be awesome to see! Very nice building indeed, cant wait to tour it.

Yeah, they could stop working on the Bofa now, leaving it like it is and the skeleton of unfinished steel would look better than the mess going on atop NYT. Hell they could even leave the crane on top.

Just shot this from Hoboken. The crown is taking shape!

That is one amazing picture. Once the facade is all the way up and spire is attached, this vantage point with be breathtaking.

So, is it topped out now? When can we see the spire :)

The steel frame appears "topped out" as we patiently await the remaining elements.

I was down there today, actually in 1114 Avenue of the Americas looking right at it along side with Verizon. Both are coimg along well. BofA is really a monster though when you get up close.

A monster it truly is. I gave the USA Construction diagram a quick look-over and, besides the Freedom Tower, there's no other skyscraper going up right now that comes close to equaling the BOA for sheer floor area.

EDIT: Trump Chicago beats this by 400k, so I guess my comment doesn't stand. Still, I think we can safely say that this is the bulkiest tower going up right now.

Well there is also Chicago Spire, which should be on the USA Construction diagram but isn't for some reason...

Next they'll be moving into the glass curtain wall and spire.

I got an upclose look at the lobby last Saturday and it is coming along nicely.

This is easily my favorite building going up right now. It looks great. Verizon is starting to look better too. It looks better than the rendering, but not as good as the old facade.

The roof of this building rises to about 881 feet, that's higher than I originally thought it would be.

Verizon looks like shit, no surprise there. ALTHOUGH, The Bofa Tower looks AWSOME! I was wrong, the Atrium is gone, but it still looks awsome!

I believe the success of this photo, besides long exposure setting, was the fact that it was taken at a particular time of day when the sky was dark blue - hence you can clearly see the green trees.

The only thing I would do with a photo like this would to slightly enhance the saturation and (possibly) the exposure to compensate (more saturation darkens the image, so adjusting the exposure would equalize that).

However way it was edited - the result is just fascinating. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/mr-fish/Miscellaneous/BigSmile.gif

JMGarcia, if you are reading this, what camera did you use for this particular shot http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/mr-fish/Miscellaneous/q.gifhttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/mr-fish/Miscellaneous/q.gifhttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/mr-fish/Miscellaneous/q.gif
