This building is truly amazing....
Although Im afraid that this 1200 ft monster will not be NYCs 2nd tallest for too long...
It may be pushed as far back as to the 10th tallest or more within just a decade or 2...

When will it be complete? And will there be an opening ceremony?

Glass Falls Again From Bank of America Tower

By Sewell Chan

Updated, 6:34 p.m. | Sidewalks and traffic around the new Bank of America Tower, diagonally across from Bryant Park, were closed this afternoon after glass fell from the 50th floor of the skyscraper at 1:55 p.m., according to police officials and eyewitnesses. It appeared that no one was injured, although emergency medical workers treated a person who apparently suffered a seizure at the scene. It was not clear if the seizure was related to the falling glass; the man was not struck by the glass.

Police officers closed off the Avenue of the Americas between 42nd and 43rd Streets, and diverted traffic to other north-south avenues. It was the latest in a series of building-related accidents at the 54-story tower, at 1111 Avenue of the Americas, at the northwest corner of the avenue’s intersection with 42nd Street. The building has been described as one of the most environmentally sensitive modern structures to be built in the city.

“I saw the glass fall,” said Ana Contreras, 40, a roasted-nut vendor who runs a stand at 43rd Street and the Avenue of the Americas. “I was sitting right here.”

“There were small pieces of glass that fell there, there and there,” she said, pointing at various spots around her. “It all happened in three seconds.”

Ms. Contreras said she was seated on a milk crate under an umbrella next to her vending cart and was unafraid as the shards of glass fell around her.

On Aug. 12, a 1,500-pound, floor-to-ceiling glass panel plummeted more than 50 stories from the tower and onto a covered sidewalk shed on the other side of 42nd Street. It was the second time in recent months that a sheet of glass had dropped onto that intersection.

On Oct. 17, 2007, eight people on the ground were injured when a bathtub-size steel bucket full of debris fell from the roof of the building, banging along the side of the building and trailing a shower of glass and metal as it crashed to the street 53 stories below.

John P. Gallagher, a spokesman for the Tishman Realty and Construction Company, which managed construction of the skyscraper, said in a statement:

At approximately 2 p.m. today, a few small pieces of broken glass were reported on the ground around Grace Plaza on 6th Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets. Upon further inspection, it was determined that the glass fell from the 50th floor of the Bank of America Tower across the street. At the time of the incident, no work was being conducted in the area where the glass originated from. There are no reported injuries. Tishman Construction is cooperating fully with FDNY, NYPD and the Department of Buildings to make sure the area in question is secure and to determine the cause of the incident.

A spokesman for the Durst Organization, the developer that built the skyscraper, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tony Sclafani, a spokesman for the Buildings Department, which was investigating the accident, said a stop-work order was issued for work on the exterior of the building.

“The construction operations happening on the exterior of the building is stopped right now,” said Mr. Sclafani. He said it was too early to say whether citations would be issued to Tishman Construction.

“Right now we are investigating,” he said. “We are still there.”

Al Baker and Martin Espinoza contributed reporting.

I must have just missed you, I was at Bryant Park last night and saw the lights on the upper floors being turned off and on repeatedly, I'm sure they were being tested but still seemed kind of wierd. Also, this tower does have an impact from every angle. From the Shareton Hotel in Newark near EWR and from JFK when I landed there late Thursday afternoon it made the biggest presence right behind the Empire State Building. Just wait until it is completly finished and the lighting scheme is set in place!

To me, it shows whey there had to be a spire added to the Bofa. But even if it were 1,200 ft to roof, it would be overwhelmed somewhat by the sheer volume of skyscrapers in the area. The Empire State benefits by being away from the pack, for now at least.

Wow, so cute! The woman, I mean.

As far as the building, I walked by it several weeks ago and its footprint is no doubt one of the biggest I'd ever seen in person. But I still can't get over the absurdly enormous spire. If it were an antenna, I wouldn't complain because it would be serving a real purpose, but we all know that it's just a cheap trick to increase the building's structural height.

Not to beat a dead horse, but from looking more and more and taking into account that the window washing cranes are as high as they are, the roof appears to be at least 925 feet. Look toward the east end of the building. Plus in previous pictures the core comes up a lot further than the 54th floor.

Love that tower, except for that unfinished crown.

You know, I kinda like how it looks in NYCLuver's second pic. The way how just the main part of the east facade is unfinished works well with the spire, and it almost seems like it could be a nod to the deconstructivist stylings of 4 Times Square next door.

New Skyscraper Stars in National Geographic Show

November 5, 2008
By C. J. Hughes

New York’s second tallest skyscraper is getting its own television show, at least for one evening. On Thursday, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, National Geographic Television will air a one-hour documentary about The Bank of America Tower, a 54-story glass-and-steel high-rise designed by Cook + Fox that is nearing completion in Midtown Manhattan.

At about 1,200 feet (the building is 945 feet tall; its spire adds another 255 feet), the tower stands just shy of the Empire State Building, which rises 1,450 feet, including its antenna. The Chrysler Building, in the number-three spot, is 1,046 feet tall, according to New York’s Skyscraper Museum.

But height won’t be the focus of the show. Instead, it will mostly examine the tower’s “green” aspects, as the architects intend for it to be one of the most eco-friendly office buildings on the planet. To wit: An onsite co-generation energy system will supply two-thirds of the building’s energy, says Cook + Fox partner Rick Cook, AIA. Also, elevators use a destination dispatch system, which helps prevent trips with empty cars. And urinals throughout the building will be waterless—a measure that will save 3 million gallons of water a year, according to Cook. The architects hope the tower will earn a LEED Platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

For John Mernit, the show’s executive producer, illustrating how a high-rise can use cutting-edge technologies to shrink its carbon footprint, above and beyond what already exists, could provide useful lessons for others in the design and construction industry. “Now that we have this consciousness about how to build green,” he says, “people can see that it’s a better way.”

Architects especially might come away inspired, says Cook, whose firm has been active for more than a decade in the green building movement. “We are thrilled the show is promoting this project,” he says.

The tower, whose groundbreaking occurred in 2003, is now half occupied; the rest will open by 2010, says Lawrence Grayson, a Bank of America spokesman.

I know that the crown of the Chrysler starts at 700 feet. I figured that above that is strictly mechanicals as well as ornimental.
Actually there are occupiable floors inside the crown of Chrysler, and were once used for the Cloud Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Club).

^About a quarter or so of the top diamond-like portion will be like that, yeah. It's a spire of sorts.

Not to get off the top of the BofA (which has a show on tonight at 9 p.m. eastern)...but the 4 diamonds at the top will be stainless steel (according to the video), and the open portion has been altered a little since the original design:

The Chrysler crown does start at 800 feet; this being lower then the BOA's highest occupied floor.

Love those diagrams. NYC has some nice collections of skyscrapers, both built and under construction. The article also states the roof height of BOA to be correct.

There is space inside the Chrysler crown that goes higher.

BTW, the National Geographic program on the BofA tower was excellent. I am very proud of what they have done with this tower. The program will be shown again on Sat from 4-5 pm and Thurs from 5-6 pm. (eastern)

Comparing the old renders to the new renders of the BOA, it appears that there are floors/space that go above where it was supposed to be hollow.

That is true, but still not higher than space inside the Chrysler.

Thanks for the pics! Also, I would also have to agree that there would have to be space inside the Chrysler all the way up until the 925 feet where there is no more room for any inside space. Also, are all the addional floors on the BOA going to be mechanical floors including where some of the power is generated?

The tower, whose groundbreaking occurred in 2003, is now half occupied; the rest will open by 2010, says Lawrence Grayson, a Bank of America spokesman.

Pretty good show. Didn't realize how green this building is. Learned allot from watching this.

Yes, it was a very entertaining and informative program. I too learned a lot, not only about this building, but how buildings in general are erected.

I did agree with the point that the BofA tower will be among the first of many new buildings in Manhattan to become more energy efficient. Prior to the program I thought this building was just a poster child for a concept that could be widely used but won't; but as they said on the show, the initial cost of a green building might be higher than the cost of a conventional skyscraper, however it will pay for itself quickly with all the saved expenses. That is very true.

Is the top seriously still all open? It must have been like that for half a year.

Breath taking shots!!! The only thing that I hate about the Tower is that it is so crammed that you cannot really appreciate the architecture of the building..
