Those are the renderings that gave everyone the idea that there would be an antrium in the upper portions of the tower (the lighted area). I never thought so, but it appears that way. BTW, the crown is still largely facade, just not as much.
That kinda makes sense, both the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building's crowns are mostly facade and not actual floors, even moreso than this building. Then again throughout the upper portions of this tower there are several mechanical functions as well.

Atrium or not ....looks awesome
I actually like it a lot better without the atrium, there's more girt to the building than there otherwise would have been.

By far the best new skyscraper in NYC after the NYT Building. Today some friends and I were driving along the BQE in the late afternoon, while everything in the city gets that deep yellow glow. The tower, and midtown, looked like something the wildest dreams of science fiction writers and artists could never conceptualize.

As great of an addition as this tower is, when seeing it in context to the rest of the Manhattan mass, its just another tower to add to the collection. Only in Manhattan can a tower of this size an height be looked upon as 'just another, no big deal'.
I really appreciate this tower when looking at it from Bryant Park. To me that's where you capture the true imapct this tower brings to the table.

I always found the distinction between ornamental and "functional" rather besides the point. Is not making a building more aesthetically appealing a "function"?

Perhaps if you made a foray into architectural theory to dissuade us otherwise but until then, yes, arbitrary aesthetic is considered non-functional.

That shot looking down the barrel of 42nd Street is downright sick. Though I don't dig the second Silverstein twin blocking the left side of the NY Times Tower. Kind of ruins the symmetry of the shot by ruining the symmetry of a tower that relies on symmetry.
Now I can check "use the word symmetry three times in one sentence" off my to-do list for the day...

As you pull further away from that view, it's not blocked anymore, and you still get the symmetry.

^Holy shit.
Saved.
It's a great one. I've seen similar photos, but not as large as that one.
Precisely. I have it as my desktop background at full size so it's like a cropped image, and as a result all I see are buildings and no sky.

One thing that's great about this building being rather slow to finish is the abundance of superb pics being posted. :)

^ I think it will be even more of a focal point for photos once it's completed and established as a skyline landmark...

DAMN, those are some great shots!
Honestly, NY should use more shots like these, where the various NEW buildings are clustered in 1 shot. Brilliant!

If it makes you feel better, they've been working at it. There are far less missing windows now than a few months ago, and now that the top is all finished, I think the rest will clean up pretty fast.

White Way Gets a ‘Green’ Theater
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/05/04/arts/Miller600.jpg
Henry Miller’s Theater, the first newly built Broadway house in more than 20 years — and the first so-called green theater on the Great White Way — has completed major construction and is set to open in September with Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of the musical “Bye Bye Birdie.”
The 1,055-seat theater, on 43rd Street between Avenue of the Americas and Broadway, was built on the site of a theater planned by the actor Henry Miller, which opened in 1918. Over the decades, the original theater fell into disrepair and was used as a movie house and a disco before Roundabout produced the musical “Cabaret” there in 1998, followed by a run of “Urinetown.”
“The first time I came inside the old theater, it was a porno palace,” said Douglas Durst, president of the Durst Organization, which with Bank of America rebuilt the theater alongside the bank’s new 55-story tower at One Bryant Park.
The 50,000-square-foot theater, which includes a spacious women’s restroom with 22 stalls, three times the number required by code, is built behind the preserved and restored neo-Georgian facade of the original 1918 theater. During the construction, braces held the facade in place, and vibration monitors were attached to ensure that the facade was not damaged.
“We probably stopped construction work a couple of times a day and switched to vibration hammers to protect the facade,” said David Horowitz, senior vice president of Tishman Construction Corporation, the construction manager for the theater and One Bryant Park.
Tearing down the facade and rebuilding it would probably have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars, “but that wasn’t an option for historic preservation reasons,” added Rick Cook, partner of Cook + Fox Architects, which designed the new theater.
Besides the facade, the building has remnants of the original theater, including its fire exit doors and decorative plaster friezes featuring dancing muses.
The touches of the old are offset by the new; the theater will be the first in New York to meet the environmental standards of the United States Green Building Council, a construction-industry group, Mr. Durst said.
Recycled materials were used in the wall panels and baseboard; waterless urinals are used in the men’s washroom to reduce consumption of potable water; and local materials were used in the marble flooring and countertops, among other touches.
According to executives involved in the project, the last completely new Broadway theater built was the Marquis, which opened in 1986.
The Durst Organization said Roundabout had signed a 20-year lease for the theater; neither Durst nor Roundabout would disclose the financial details.
Roundabout officials are to announce on Monday that “Bye Bye Birdie” will be its inaugural production there, with previews starting Sept. 10 and opening night scheduled for Oct. 15. The production is to star John Stamos, Bill Irwin and Gina Gershon.
Roundabout is embarking on its theater venture at a challenging financial time. Like many other nonprofit theaters, Roundabout has experienced a decline in donations this season, about 20 percent. It laid off seven staff members in February, and its three senior executives took salary cuts this year.
Mr. Durst said in an interview that he had spoken first to the owners of New York’s major commercial theaters but could not make a deal with any of them.
A longtime Roundabout board member, Mr. Durst then called Todd Haimes, the theater’s artistic director, who was interested.
Through a spokesman, Mr. Haimes expressed confidence that Roundabout could financially manage its expansion. “Roundabout wouldn’t do it if we couldn’t do it,” he said.

Photo Preview: Henry Miller's Theatre on West 43rd Street

The Durst Organization and Bank of America have announced the completion of Henry Miller's Theatre on West 43rd Street in Times Square. The 1,055-seat house is located inside the new 55-story Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park and will be New York's first LEED®-rated theater. The theater and the Bank of America Tower are an Empire State Development Corporation project and a joint venture of The Durst Organization Inc. and Bank of America, N.A.
...The theater is an integral part of the One Bryant Park project, which includes the office tower and Anita's Way, a pedestrian passage linking West 42nd and 43rd Streets. The new theater is built into a low podium between the Bank of America Tower and 4 Times Square; the podium separates the towers and preserves open space above the historic façade.
"Roundabout and Henry Miller's Theatre is a perfect match," said Douglas Durst, President of The Durst Organization. "Henry Miller's Theatre is the most environmentally advanced theater in New York City and has been an important part of developing One Bryant Park as the nation's first LEED Platinum skyscraper. Roundabout has a tradition of reclaiming and revitalizing theater spaces all over the city. As a board member since 1991, I am impressed with the commitment of the institution to bring great theater to New York audiences. Under Todd Haimes' leadership, Roundabout has transformed into a major cultural institution of New York City, and I expect he will bring the same theatrical programming and vitality to the Henry Miller's Theatre."
"I want to thank Bank of America and The Durst Organization for their unrelenting commitment in supporting the arts," said City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn. "I can't think of a more exciting way to open a new theater in the heart of the Broadway theater district than with Roundabout Theatre Company at the helm and also thank the Roundabout for moving forward in these tough times."
