1.) 375 Pearl is DEFINITELY not landmarked. The developer is in a battle with the city about the square footage of the original being more than the city allowed in the air rights transfer. I'd be happy for them to tear it down OR reclad it, but there seams to be little reason to tear it down. Almost no one is in it right now.

2.) These photos of the Gehry are great, but if you haven't seen it in person, you have to go. There's no way to take photos that show how shiny it is. It hurts your eyes to look at. It's literally like looking at the sun. It burns. It's really something of a building.

They always are more beautiful in person, I can't wait to visit New York again.

They can't reclad it, and they can't tear it down. It's apparently landmarked.

We're talking about the one in the previous pictures with the "Verizon" sign on it, and yes there is a plan to reclad it.

Apparently there is some debate, god knows why, but I give a thumbs up to whoever breaks this deal.

Beekman sure does live up to its renderings' depiction.

There’s probably debate because that’s a very tough spot for an office building, hence the reason why tenants aren’t banging on the door for space.

Beekman from a skyline perspective gives it a little company at least.

Not at all, actually a very improved area. What I mean by ‘tough location’ is that the building is off the beaten path. In other words, inconvenient.

1.) Last I heard the developer was in a fight with the city. 2.) If the plan was dropped, it's still obvious the building needs to be recladded, and that means we're no worse off than we were when there were plans to reclad it, since they were never carried out.

He means that the area around City Hall sucks. Lots of bridge traffic, no shopping, nowhere good to eat, etc.

That's the one (fatal) flaw with this Gehry tower - it's in completely the wrong place. If it was a bit west near the Hudson in the far southern part of TriBeCa, now that would be a building worth actually living in.

you're not the only one. ;) as CoolCzech said in the 1WTC thread, beekman looks pretty tall when viewed from the brooklyn bridge. but from other angles not so much, like the one in the pic. i think people (and especially tourists) will have to look harder to find the beekman when they are let's say on the ESB obervation deck.

i disagree, right in that area you have tons of amenities. theres J&R just 2 blocks up toward city hall and going on Fulton and Courtland street theres alot of eateries(BK,McDonalds, sushi, pizza, deli's,Dunkin Donuts etc) going to West street a block away from the WTC is a whole Foods, Barnes & Nobles and a bed bath and beyond, eateries also reside on Church street and not to mention residents of Beekman will be only a short walking distance from the South Street Seaport. and if your looking for high priced eating throughout the Winter garden,WFC and Battery Park you can find many restaurants to satisfy everyone's taste. in the end a residence at Beekman is an all around good buy.

1) Last you heard. The fight with the city involves the tower being larger than it was supposed to be. The reclad was dropped early during the economic downturn. That's not to say it couldn't be brought back. 2) "Obvious" is not the right choice of words for any recladding.

If you take away direct light, most of the building doesn't display much movement at all.

The same thing could be said about most supermodels, sans the movement piece. Every physical subject has a lighting situation that is less-than-flattering. Just because Beekman isn't immune to that doesn't make it an unsuccessful design. When the light is right - or even half right - this design really sings.

WAN photographer risks life and limb to bring you these exclusive images from NYC...

WAN is delighted to bring you these exclusive update images of Frank Gehry’s 1.1million sq ft Beekman Tower. A multi-storey mixed-use facility, the wrinkled stainless steel façade is signature Gehry and towers above its neighbours at 76 storeys high. Our fearless photographer Wade Zimmerman almost managed to get himself banged up on this mission, receiving a stern warning from New York’s finest after trespassing into a restricted area of police headquarters to get the best angles. Luckily the smooth-talking maverick managed to skip out, enabling us to bring you these fantastic images of the shimmering Beekman Tower.

At 8 Spruce Street in Manhattan, Gehry’s design was brought to life by New York developer Forest City Ratner. It incorporates luxury living accommodation, a public elementary school owned by the Department of Education and an ambulatory care centre. The school itself seats 630 students and takes up approximately 100,000 sq ft over 5 floors, whilst public plazas on the east and west sides of the development provide a touch of outdoor escapism in the city that never sleeps.

It was only a matter of time until Gehry made his mark on Manhattan. His first residential project in New York, the master of controversial architecture will be joining the legions of architects and designers facing the wrath of outspoken New Yorkers who are not afraid to comment on the ever-changing skyline of their beloved city. Currently under attack are Pelli Clarke Pelli for their highly disputed 15 Penn Plaza project whilst the backlash against the Ground Zero mosque continues to gather momentum despite the fact that an architect has yet to be named. How Gehry’s Beekman Tower will be received is yet to be seen.

^^^ It does look like someone managed to get a sliver punch card in a paper jam, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The only think I think is bad about this building is the flat face of it. It just doesn't jive with the rest of it. I'll say I think the rest of Beekman is certainly interesting, but I'll reserve judgement until they take that god awful skip off the side of it. Totally fattens up the massing and I can't tell if it will look better or worse without the width added by the skip.

This tower is undeniably breathtaking. And I love how different it looks in varying weather conditions. In fact, I think it looks best on rainy days when the tower turns the most beautiful shade of bronze.

As you walk along Centre to the east of City Hall, you see people stop and gape. In a city full of awe-inspiring architecture, that isn't easy to do. Gehry has given New York a new landmark.

It's on top of a parking garage just down the road from the WTC site.

As great as this tower is, imagine if a twin were to be built.

quite honestly i think a twin for this one would be counter productive because there would be two of the same unique style on the skyline as opposed to one centerpiece that catches the eye. imo twins only are seen as towers who compliment each other and one can never be appreciated on its own.

The rippling New York building which looks like the set of movie Inception

16th September 2010

It looks like a scene from the movie Inception, where 'mind thief' Leonardo DiCaprio warps and reshapes buildings to show how you can control dreams.

But this rippling 76-storey megalith is actually a real-life building which stands in downtown Manhattan.

The Beekman Tower, which was designed by architect Frank Gehry, is the latest addition to the New York skyline and is set to be one of the city’s tallest buildings when it launches later this year.

Its undulating steel frame provides the illusion of movement, which is reminiscent of the transforming architecture in Christopher Nolan’s film which stars DiCaprio as a thief who extracts information from the subconscious mind of his victims while they dream.

The tower is situated south of City Hall Plaza and the Brooklyn Bridge and will consist of a public elementary school, luxury apartments, a space for New York downtown hospital and an underground public car park.

Gehry’s design was brought to life by New York developer Forest City Ratner.

The architect previously revealed that the design was inspired by the drapery in marble sculptures by17th-century Baroque artist Gianlorenzo Bernini.

This building is amazing, can't wait to see it in person. Now that the cladding is finished it looks so good it almost looks fake... like a rendering.

Exactly. The design is so fantastic the mind can barely accept it as real when seeing it in a photo!

I like how it looks like it could have been built now or back when the chrysler was built. It blends in really well with ny style architecture and doesnt stick out the way all the new glass buildings do, it sticks out in a different way.
