^^^ Its just his opinion. It doesn't require that you agree or to be confused by it. Vice Versa
I think its a fair point, but I dont think Gehry is that different than a lot of other "starchitects" in this regard. The problem I see is that developers feel required to have starchitects (be it portzamparc or nouvel, etc) designing their residential towers in order to be competative with each other, but starchitects just don't have a vested interest in the city proper that they should. Gehry is just the first of multiple proposals. It seems to me that they're often more interested in proposing trophy towers rather than putting out good, relatable architecture. New York really doesn't have the sense of architectural cohesion it should...not as in buildings being of homogenous styles or materials, but in terms of contexuality and harmony. Having these starchitects designing buildings just isn't be as good as a home-grown group of architects who really care about putting New York first, and not their name, style, or business.
I actually think that the metal cladding material is one of the best parts of this building, so while it probably was just Gehry being stubborn, in some ways it worked this time.
while i agree with you this also makes me laugh because this is nyc so of course we have just what you want too -- robert a.m. stern.
i think in the end the starchitect apt buildings and mishmash is as important as contextuality and harmony and also defines the city. i get more worked up over the changs and fedders specials than the good stuff being out of context and harmony, because context changes, but crap-a-tecture just festers.

The best architecture, no matter what it is, addresses the street grid in NYC. That means buildings like NYbG are great. Buildings like the new Holiday Inn(s) on 36th st, less so. The grey area that gets tougher is a building like Blackrock (CBS). Does not address the street wall, but is a solid, architecturally interesting building. Same for something like OCMP. Tougher calls. I'm still not sure. And then there's something like 7WTC. Pretty facade, but poor street presence. I'll figure them out one of these days.

Good to see it finishing up. Most building facade appearances aren't affected much by construction elevators or other attached structures during construction, but this one's facade is so much a part of its structural shape that until the construction equipment comes down, we won't have a clear picture of what it'll really look like. I'm guessing there will be a vertical shaft of windows there with no curve in the facade.

Someone posted a night time shot a while ago that showed an entire face of the building being lit from below. Were they testing out the lighting? I hope so, because that's exactly the type of lighting this building should have; a scheme that allows you to see the ripples at night.

Now Renting: Luxe Condos Built for the Global Rich
Frank Gehry's crumpled, stainless-steel skyscraper in Manhattan--the tallest residential tower in the world--was originally supposed to include 200 sprawling condos along with 700 rentals. Now all of the critically-acclaimed building's apartments are for rent. The units, whose rents start at $2,630 for a 600-square-foot studio, are even rent-stabilized --meaning rents are regulated so tenants will only see small annual increases. There's even an option to pay extra for décor hand-picked by Gehry, including Capellini's Rive Droite armchair, Jonathan Adler's Claude Drawers and Blu Dot's Swept Sofa.:)

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is pleased to announce the winners of its annual “Best Tall Building” awards for 2011. These awards recognize outstanding tall buildings from each of four geographical regions, and this year are awarded to: "New York by Gehry" at Eight Spruce Street, New York (Americas); Guangzhou International Finance Center, Guangzhou (Asia & Australasia); KfW Westarkade, Frankfurt (Europe); and The Index, Dubai (Middle East & Africa). These buildings were selected for their design and technical innovations, sustainable attributes, and the enhancement of both cities and the lives of their inhabitants.

Eight Spruce Street, New York, USA
Completion Date: April 2011
Height: 265 m (870 ft)
Stories: 76
Gross Floor Area: 102,193 m² (1,100,00 ft²)
Use: Residential
Owner/Developer: Forest City Ratner Companies
Design Architect: Gehry Partners, LLP
Structural Engineer: WSP Cantor Seinuk
MEP Engineer: Jaros Baum and Bolles
Construction Manager: Kreisler Borg Florman General Construction Company
Main Contractor: Kreisler Borg Florman General Construction Company
The façade of "New York by Gehry" at Eight Spruce Street, designed to create a draping fabric-like quality, creates a unique signature, while holding itself as very much a “New York” building grounded in its traditional setback rules. The façade is partly a result of the client’s desire to have bay windows in each residential unit. The windows are shifted from floor-to-floor and vary in size, creating the drape-like effect. Inside, the residential units are arranged to efficiently marry the plan to the façade.
“The tower invigorates a part of Manhattan that has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, and as the Tallest All-Residential Building in North America, adds significantly to the urban-population and diversification of its neighborhood.” – Rick Cook, 2011 Awards Chair, Cook + Fox Architects

Yeah, we are waiting, but that shouldn't be too far off. That won't be the end of this building or photos/discussions of it. A new thread will be created in the architecture forum. We can drool over it there.

damn, so how long till it's 'completed'?
i love this building to death, but there is one thing that bothers me about this project, the flat wall. it's not because it's flat, or because it's all metal, but there's not much unity on the windows. at each setback they move a little and there's no pattern or consistency. i would've liked to see something more uniform. it'd contrast well against the randomness of the waves and make it more classy imo.

I'll say it again. This building is 870' of building. No spire or other tricks. Really, this is a 1000' building (or more) when you consider how many things in this size would have a big spire on top.

Inside Gotham's newest skyscraper, New York by Gehry
http://bestplaces.nydailynews.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/content_main_image/images/2011/08/04/gehrylead.jpg
Standing on the just-released-for-rent upper floors in New York by Gehry has a profound effect on the human mind and body. Your ears pop on the way up to the top. The views from the under-construction penthouse floors beat a landing airplane.
The tallest residential building in the United States at 76 stories, 8 Spruce St. is so giant it feels like you can reach over from a high window and pick up the Statue of Liberty between your thumb and pointer finger. When you step into any bay window formed by the tower’s angled curtain wall, all you can say is: “Whoa. Whoa.”
This building makes you stand on your tiptoes. It makes you want to kiss the glass and see more. From the highest terrace on the tower’s 52nd floor, where developer Forest City Ratner set up a three-bedroom model apartment available for $21,000 per month, looking up at the building might be the closest thing local architecture fans could call a thrill ride. With your head back, moving inch by inch along the low guardrail, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry’s upper floors move flamelike into the sky. If Jack in the fairy tale were still looking for a beanstalk, he’d start here........

TODD MAISEL/NEWS
Sixteen-year-old Brandon Centeno, who took our real estate section cover photograph for the print edition, has taken more than 1,000 photos of New York by Gehry and edited YouTube videos about it. He lives in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, and attends Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge.
RELATED: Inside Gotham's newest skyscraper, New York by Gehry
For four years, Centeno has taught himself structural engineering and architecture, including 3-D modeling. Centeno has this to say about the building:
“It’s simple. It’s pure magic. I am an aspiring architect, and I like most buildings as long as there is some hint of intellectual design put into them, but New York by Gehry is a different breed of building. One of the best things about it is its ability to make people look up. It may be street level that makes a city enjoyable but it’s the sky level that makes it awe-inspiring. Frank Gehry has given us a cultural marker that ushers in a new modern era of architecture for N.Y.C.
“I must say Bruce Ratner is a man I look up to and am thankful for. He has led the way for Gehry’s dream to come to life and is now creating a new way of living in Brooklyn with his stadium at the Atlantic Yards. It’s guys like him who make this city great. There is too much potential in the streets of New York for it to go to waste. This city is my home, my heritage and my life. That’s why I care what rises here.”

Gehry's rollicking tower: From the architect of Chicago's Pritzker Pavilion, a sensuous first skyscraper in Manhattan
BY BLAIR KAMIN
August 26, 2011
Frank Gehry's new 8 Spruce Street apartment tower may be the most delicious piece of eye candy to hit the Manhattan skyline since the Chrysler Building. It is also a very expensive place to live. A 450-square-foot studio rents for at least $2,600 a month, and the asking price for a three-bedroom penthouse apartment is expected to be somewhere around $25,000 a month.
The 76-story high-rise, Gehry's first skyscraper, is wrapped in a sensuous exterior of stainless steel that ripples like folds of drapery and brilliantly catches the light. There is nothing else quite like it, though the building bears similarities to Jeanne Gang's spectacularly undulating, 81-story Aqua residential and hotel tower in Chicago.
But to linger solely on 8 Spruce Street's strikingly crumpled skin is to miss this skyscraper's deeper appeal. Based on a recent tour I took, it also appears to be a welcoming, pleasantly quirky place to live. Gehry, in other words, has given us the total package, not a slick facade job where the architecture only runs a few inches deep...

but heck, we will soon have the tallest all-residential tower in North America! (Aura)... EAT IT NY! :haha:

Not to encourage a pissing contest, but isn't this tower taller than then the Aura? This website lists Aura's height as 827 ft versus NY by Gehry's 870 ft.
Regardless, Extell's residential tower on West 57th Street is well on its way to 1,005 feet.

they plan on having a height increase, that should bring it around 270m, but as it stands on the diagrams page, it is 264m vs Beekman's 267m, but it's close!
