I thought the tower itself should have the solar-panels or something like that - creating convection currents inside, which in turn drive the turbines or something??

Man that thing is huge both Vertically AND Horizontally ;)

I think the design has been changed to only 500m now.

Thats still pretty tall for something in the middle of the desert though.
