This building really rose from behind the scenes; stuck in the middle of the loop, there were really no great river, lake or other dominant shots that made this building stick out in the headlines. Following Chicago's architecture as an architect, as a blogger and as a photographer this building consistently impressed me. Having taken a break from this building for a few months, I returned to this blog only to find it turn out better than i had imagined.
With a strong presence on the park and clean dominating vertical lines all combined with an amazing adaptation to the existing street level facade, I deem this building a complete success. I am very excited to have this building show up in future park photographs of Chicago.

Of all the buildings built during this latest boom this one most drastically changes the typical postcard skyline shot of Chicago. Trump is in a close second place but it's to far off to have as dramatic of an impact.

i'd actually say that trump and legacy have about equal impact on the stereotypical postcard shot. hell trump may even have a tad more. BCBS is another standout due to it sheer hulking bulk. what does surprise me though is how much more impact legacy has over its cousin, the heritage, despite only a 188' height difference and only a couple of blocks separating them. the heritage is almost invisible by comparison.

I agree :previous:
From Millenium Park (probably the first place any tourist would go, given just one day in Chicago) the Legacy is absolutely dominating. From a long distance (the suburbs) theres no comparison, Trump is visible and Legacy is not.
Any river tour is sure to put Trump Tower in the spotlight.
Any word on interior build-out or occupancy?

My Chase debit card has that image of Chicago on it. I had to get a new card recently, so I was hoping they had updated the skyline with Legacy (ha!)
There's no Legacy or Spertus in the image, and Trump would be out of the frame, but it does have Citadel Center, so it must be 2003-2004ish. That makes sense, since Chase had a big "Chicago" marketing push after they bought BankOne in 2004. That means they haven't changed the photo in 6 years... haha.

^^^ There are also a handful of window panes that are not installed, there is one or two on the West face way up top and then I think a couple wayyy down near the base. The one up top is boarded up and is probably the result of a defective or broken pane of glass. So that doesn't really count as U/C, but I think there are a few right at the base that might still have a temp construction door installed to provide access to the roof of the base, those would definitely suggest U/C.

I'm fine with the pylons... Since they're freestanding, they can be easily replaced or taken out later without impacting L service or shutting down lanes on Wabash. I just wish they were more creatively designed instead of a stupid carbon copy of the Loop's steel-and-rivets look. It's supposed to be the Jewelry District... why not something crystalline?
Wabash is really wide, which isn't immediately obvious. I'm not sure if it started out that way, or whether the city enforced a big setback after the Loop was finished in 1897. Regardless, that allows a good deal of natural light to reach the sidewalk, which isn't the case on Lake, Wells, or Van Buren.
Wabash is a wide street, but it only has four lanes (two travel, two parking). That leaves the sidewalks to be huge, which is uncomfortable for pedestrians and ugly. The pylons reduce the width of the sidewalks, make them seem more crowded and busy, and provide a sense of identity. The combination of the streetscaping and the natural light make Wabash into a viable commercial corridor, much more than the other three Loop streets, which will always be dark warrens.

"Dank near alley"? I've always loved Wabash's grittiness and think it's brimming with character.
killaviews
Jun 6, 2010, 2:34 AM
I'm glad the grittiness is gone and going. Wabash feels brand new, but brand new in the 1930s.
Walking past this building on Wabash or Monroe, you would never realize you're walking past an 800 foot skyscraper. They did an ideal job in preserving the character of the block.

Huh?? I've never heard anyone say that a street's sidewalks are too wide (short of a complete malling-over).
I think they are one of the best catalysts to making this loud clattery street into one that people will stroll down and one that tourists won't hesitate to venture into.
Whether it's a wise use of precious Loop space to sacrifice roadway capacity for them, especially since sidewalk pub/cafe uses are unlikely, would be one thing. But how are huge sidewalks ugly and uncomfortable?

The tower crane has been down for a full year. Interior build out must be taking some extra time.
Love this building, and its location.

^ Just for that, I'm going to post miscellaneous comments until we hit 101.
So how does the bridge to the University Club work -- does the club uses Legacy's gym or vice versa? Or are they merged into one multifaceted facility?

Some of both, Legacy owners can become members of the club, as well as get room service and some other perks. The big thing that the club got in the Legacy was new squash courts.

I'm not sure when it started, but the grooves on the top south side are now lit at night. I saw it last night when I went for a run. I think it looks fantastic

now we need a supertall in between Legacy and Trump

^^^ Naw, that would just start to look cluttered. What we need is an even taller supertall between Trump and Aon center to reinforce the center "peak" in the skyline. I'm thinking the Mandarin Oriental site might be perfect. Its certainly big enough.
God Chicago is beautiful. The new lighting on Trump and Legacy really adds a lot of "spark" to the night scene.

Where do you enter the tower from?
The lobby is, oddly enough, in the Art Institute's building on the NE corner of Wabash and Monroe. They couldn't cut across the alley, but they wanted to make the entrance as close to Millennium Park as possible. So the entrance is on the Monroe side, near the middle of the block.
Wabash also feels a little sketchy at night (although better than it used to be). Monroe is a busy street at night for numerous reasons, so it feels much safer.
