Pertaining to the picture you posted, It loooks like either the Stadtbahn line or possibly the U1 line? But I really don't know!

It sure looks like an disused line and there comes only one line to mind if this used to be an S-bahn line: somewhere north west of Jungfernheide

Perhaps near the HBF (who is in my opinion a complete waste of money) , a fourth city centre could be a good idea though.
Where the covered tracks of the S-bahn are create a artificial lake to make an "fake island" as a remembrance of the many waterways in the city,
towers look much better in the vicinity of water:

New Investment 800 Million Euros by Irish and Munich Companies in what's called "Airport city" near Schonefeld.
http://www.morgenpost.de/content/2008/05/30/berlin/965027.html
Translation from yahoo!
The planned capital airport BBI in Schönefeld attracts international investors. The Irish investor consortium Bulberry Properties Limited and the Investa project development and administration GmbH made of Munich want 800 million euros into the development of a trade area to invest. It concerns a 34 hectare large area north the rapid-transit railway yard Schönefeld and west the Waltersdorfer Chaussee (B 179) and A 113. ƒ Under the heading " Airport City" offices, conference center, resounding for logistics companies, hotels and dwellings are planned. Commencement of construction should be 2009/10. " There are already large international societies, which take their company headquarters here wollen" , yesterday Philipp C said. Tabert, managing director of the real estate agent of winter & Deer; exclusively concern it enterprises, which have to do with the air traffic. Winter & For Bulberry corresponding surfaces had looked for and are responsible deer also for the marketing of the new trade area. Bulberry and the past exclusive surface owner Investa united to a joint venture and firmieren for two weeks under airport park Schönefeld GmbH & CO. Kg. By it Bulberry 60 and Investa hold 40 per cent. To the Irish investors and partners von Bulberry belong the brothers Ulick and the moon McEvaddy. Both are active in the international aircraft industry and real estate development. they created 1984 omega air, a company for the refueling of airplanes. At present they plan further terminals at the airport Dublin. The new society sets particularly on the proximity to BBI and the locking of the airports connected with the building Tegel and Tempelhof. According to a current own study count winter & Deer with alone 500 enterprises with altogether 20,000 workers, who move away by the locking of the airports in the city into beautiful fields the area to BBI. Further 200 international enterprises such as logisticians, package companies and airlines would be added again, so Tabert. Also the British and Germans actively The fact that the BBI surrounding field becomes increasingly interesting for investors showed up already at the beginning of the yearly, when the airport company sold 38 hectares of the former building field east and future BBI Business park to the British trade area operator Segro. Segro wants to already build a resounding on supply, what rates airport boss Rainer black as proof for the Prosperität of the airport surrounding field. For settlements around the airport Ulrich Junghanns (CDU) stands at present for 600 hectares approximately for order, of it 400 in the municipality Schönefeld according to data of of Brandenburg minister of economics. There also the 80 hectares large future trade area of the HVB real estate GmbH lies. So far are there the hotel Holiday Inn, the logistics enterprise Dachser and a letter distribution center of the post office settled. The British logistics company Sunshine on 5,3 hectares will establish itself here shortly. Also the Holiday Inn develops.

Deutschlandhalle to be torn down in 2011
The building was built in 1935 for 10.000 people by Franz Orthmann & Fritz Wiemer.

Why will it be torn down, what'll replace it?
Schöneberger Linse copmletely fails to catch my imagination or feeling. IMO lacks density on the ground (a few taller ones don't make up for bad planning). What's there today?

Today there is nothing but an urban wasteland.

There is a new stadium U/C for the ice hockey team near the Glockenturmstraße.
Normally the ICC would have been torn down too but nowadays there are 2 extensions planned.

Would be great if theyd take down that ugly addition to the Park Inn and then built a new building opposite to the Hines.

Thank god the bloody asbestos palace is nearly history.
People from the BVG should ask to built the U55 tunnel before the park is going to be built upon it.
I guess the U55 will run under the street doesnt it?
That would also mean that theyd have to chop the trees down on UdL

@ Grumpy,
they should also build a double tunnel for the planned U10 from donhofplatz/Jerusalemer strasse to the alex as this was future planning with the Rathaus to be an exchange station between the U5 and U10, they should build it before they start work on the Berlin palace!

It would be such an excellent opportunity to do so.
You are right but isn't there something else needed that is so hard to find in BLN : cash ?

Yes, the U5 is to go under the Under den Linden, a new station called Under den Linden is planned to be built in the middle of Friedrichstrasse/Under den Linden, so the trees would have to come down as the two exit/entry points to the station would I imagine, be built in the middle either side of Friedrichstrasse on the Under den Linden.
The plan also calls for the closure of Franzosisch strasse and the new station
Under den Linden to be an exchange station between the U5 and the U6 lines!

the whole MediaSpree-issue is much more complex than it seems.
the simple way:
the problem is, that the planned towers and midrises would make the rents EXPLODE as they did in other new developed areas.
And that would take place in districts which are actually known for their quite low rents.
So it´s just logical that the inhabitants do protest against the plans.
another issue is that such an area is not needed (yet). i am sure that most of the bureau-areas would not be rented for long since so many new office buildings are built in central Berlin. the same would happen to the flat and appartment buildings in my opinion. so people think that the money better should be spent on something more senseful.

So it's the City building all of this? or maybe, just maybe, it's private investors who would NOT invest money into what some are calling for. It's not the same money!!! I'm tired of this basic mistake from nimbys. They fear gentrification (valid fear, but not one that can be allowed to overrule everything) and they fear change (because it is change and change can never be good?).

From wikipedia, Berlin U-bahn planning!
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-Bahn_Berlin&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=8&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dberlin%2Bu-bahn%26start%3D20%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN
Actually, if the station is as planned, an exchange station between the U5 & U6, then the station would need four exit/entry points. It would make more sense to build them at the four corners of Under Den Linden at Friedrichstrasse!?
Therefore, there may not be any need to cut down the trees on the middle strip on the under den Linden if the exits are to be built at the corners of Under Den Linden at Friedrichstrasse?

Would be great if theyd take down that ugly addition to the Park Inn and then built a new building opposite to the Hines.
That area is destined for demolition circa 2009 for the building phase D1-D3, which is meant to commence construction in 2009?
Apparently, the plan is that after D4 is completed; the Hines at Alexanderplatz, the plinth area around the Park Inn, is to be demolished to make way for the start of construction of D1 and D3! Later, the Park Inn itself is meant to be demolished under senate plans!

Well... I think it´s more a fear of failing.
People also expected Berlin to grow rediculous fast between 1990 and 2000.
They expected the city to get like 1 Mio more inhabitants within these 10 years but nothing happened. the city even lost inhabitants.
That´s also why the new buildings are that large.
For example the new central station. It´s Europe's largest station and its capacity is much higher that needed atm.
Another fact is the special law in Berlin. A lot of national and international companies wanted to build their HQ in central Berlin but the city said: No! because they wanted to save the historical look of central Berlin, which is good in my opinion. I wouldn't want Berlin to become a 2nd Frankfurt.
Berlin simply is not a skyscraper city.

^^ Well, there are plenty of places in central Berlin which do not have any significant historical architecture and would be perfect for skyscrapers.

Considering so much was destroyed during WWII there really isn't that much of a historical core compared to other European cities. Which is really quite sad as the original city was stunning.
Anyhow, I prefer clusters and some ideal spots would be Alexanderplatz (This was also planned), Potsdamer Platz (Already started) and of cause if Western Berlin wants to relaunch itself, around the Zoo area.
Now, in my opinion, there really is not that much in the way of historical classics in those area's. Many plots have already been built over with lowrises as it is. In fact, Berlin seems much more of a modern city these days than a historical one.
one very bored guy
Aug 5, 2008, 10:52 AM
Oh, and as for Berlin becoming a “2nd Frankfurt“ just because it has highrises is completely foreign to me. Just because a city has highrises doesn’t mean it looks the same as another city with highrises. Auckland looks nothing like Sydney which looks nothing like Melbourne which looks nothing like Chicago etc.
It’s the same as someone from say LA coming to Europe and thinking every city looks the same because they have lowrises ;)

planning for north -South tunnel nearly finalised S21 .
http://www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/aktuell/pressebox/archiv_volltext.shtml?arch_0808/nachricht3159.html
Translation from Yahoo!
Conditions for the building of the new north south rapid-transit railway production 08.08.08 The citizen of Berlin main station will receive a new north south rapid-transit railway binding.
This is the result of a use cost study, which is present since at the end of of July and was given of the senate administration for town development in order. Passengers will reach the main station presumably starting from 2016 of the rapid-transit railway north ring and of all rapid-transit railway yards of the line S 1 directly without detour over the rapid-transit railway yard Friedrichstraße and the metropolitan railway.
The building of a new is planned rapid-transit railway-strains. It is to connect the north ring in the first stage of development over a west curve of the rapid-transit railway yard west port and an east curve of the rapid-transit railway yard Wedding with the main station. In the second stage of development the rapid-transit railway new building distance is to be led of the main station, at Reichstag past to the Potsdamer the place. East the Reichstag building is planned a new rapid-transit railway yard. New S ‑ railroad line will at height of the Brandenburger of gate the existing tunnel of the old north south rapid-transit railway, for which 1939 were already laid out regarding a second north south rapid-transit railway 4-gleisig, lead into and it to Potsdamer place with to use.
The costs of the rapid-transit railway new building distance amount to without the planned stop to Reichstag approx. 317 millions € net, with stop to Reichstag, whose feasibility is still examined at present, approx. 330 millions € net.
Due to the high capital outlays a promotion of the project is essential by the federation. When a condition for a promotion must is proven that the project from overall economic view will affect itself favourably for the passengers, the rapid-transit railway Berlin GmbH and Land Berlin. By a rapid-transit railway operating concept, which was developed together with the rapid-transit railway Berlin GmbH, the proof of significant improvements from verkehrlicher, overall economic and operational view could be furnished. Afterwards becomes
* the new line S 21 between young remote heath and Potsdamer place over the west curve,
* the line S 1 (Oranienburg - when lake and Frohnau - when lake) over the east curve and the main station to the Potsdamer place and no more over the Friedrichstraße and
* the line S 85 of the airport BBI over east cross, the north ring, the east curve, the main station, the Potsdamer place after Zehlendorf operate.
With this line offer approx. 80 Tsd become., between main station and Potsdamer place approx. 70 Tsd on the new rapid-transit railway-strain between north ring and main station. Passengers per day expects. The passenger arising on the old northsouthrapid-transit railway-strains reduces around about 35 Tsd. Passengers per day.
With the proof of a positive use cost relationship a substantial hurdle could to the protection of the financing of the new northsouthrapid-transit railway-strains to be taken. The railway enterprises and Land Berlin agreed, as soon as possible the request on awarding of federal conveyances for the first stage of development of the new northsouthrapid-transit railway-strain to place. On the part of the federation there are for this first positive signals. The necessary complementary financing by Land Berlin is secured. With the building of the north ring and the new main station Berlin invested already approx. 57 millions € of it for preferred construction measures into the project.
The building of the rapid-transit railway new building distance from the north ring to the main station could take place after the security of the financing in the years 2009 to 2015. The realization of the second stage of development from the main station to the Potsdamer place is to take place after completion of the construction measure to the U 5-Verlängerung, approximately starting from 2018.
