Town is situated on left (northern) bank of Seversky Donets river.
Svyatogorsk & its environs are popular health-resort.

Settlement Bannoye (Банное) was found in 1779. In 1964 village became a town Slavyanogorsk (Славяногорск).
After local plebiscite (2001) town in 2003 was renamed to Svyatogorsk (Святогорск). This name was taken from the Svyatogorsky cloister which is situated on opposite side of river. The Cloister exists from XVI century.
