Yeah, a lot of the people on this site probably overlook Tokyo because it doesn't have any supertall highrises (and likely isn't going to) like they're building in China and Dubai and whatnot. But as you said, the impressiveness of Tokyo is not the height of the buildings, but the fact that they are just everywhere. You're right that pictures don't do it justice, because it's impossible to get everything into one picture. The only places you can get pictures of the entire Tokyo skyline are with a telephoto lens from Yokohama or Chiba (maybe Saitama too).

Its not that I think Tokyo should not have buildings that are new, different, and all that - its just the city is absolutely amazing and stunning as it is. Its not like you think, "Wow, this is a ugly/lame city" - it is the opposite.

To be perfectly honest with you, as I briefly mentioned above, I think Tokyo does need more interesting buildings. The majority of the buildings going up now I would describe as either nice looking, but not especially memorable, or sometimes slightly boring (residential buildings are sometimes pretty dull). Take for instance the GranTokyo Towers on the north and south sides of Tokyo station. These are the tallest buildings in the area and are supposed to be a kind of landmark thing for Tokyo station. But honestly, they are little more than big glass boxes which, while nice looking, are not especially memorable, aside from their impressive size. Interesting designs or not, Tokyo will still be impressive, but sometimes I feel like most clients are just too afraid to try more daring designs.

For those people who want to know how badass Tokyo is, even without the supertalls.

I found this through the google image search at this: http://www.popamericana.com/!/tokyo%20at%20night.jpg

This picture show the front, left, right, back all around view. This is just what Tokyo is. LeeWilson is right, Tokyo is just simple everywhere.

Yep, that’s a nice photo.

But I think it really highlights the issue.
From looking at that photo you can see the clusters of buildings and while there are no super-tall’s there are some tall ones that are easily over looked, like look at Roppongi hills (238 m) 780ft it barely stands out, if you didn’t know about Shinjuku then again you would completely overlook it.

Also the photo is missing Tokyo newest and tallest building, Mid Town.

Interesting picture. I might as well post a couple I took so you can compare in the daytime, from different angles. One is from last summer from the World Trade Center Building, and the other is one I took earlier this year from the Rainbow Bridge.

Yeah there is alot of tall building everywhere, they are just not really go together to develop a skyline, they are going on every place in Tokyo area. Yupp I notice it skip the Mid Town or maybe it is just taken before the Mid Town was built?

Awesome picture! I love your picture, I really do.

Also - it is amazing how many 'tall' buildings (5, 10, 15+ stories) you find way outside the city, and how the density is just astonishing even dozens of miles outside the city.

Going to Nikko, you just kept going and going, and it seemed like ultra-dense development didn't stop for ever (where NYC would have been single family homes on a half-acre, things in Tokyo were still as dense as they could have been).

Again, I cannot believe how much I saw, experienced, and learned there. Fascinating and amazing place to visit.

The other thing is the astonishing use of space - it appeared to me that every usable piece of the city was being used to its fullest. Made me realized how much wasted space there is in the USA.

Oh, and ~$5 USD buys you a nice lunch or dinner at AM/PM :-)

Hey guys...First, thank you for the interesting news about tokyo skyline.
Second I want to tell you that I just saw the sketch on this web site (under tokyo skyline folder) of the new building in Toranomon..250 meter..the shape is really fantanstic. so futuristic..Lee Wilson, do you have any more details?
thanks..

The plan itself is not new, and has been in development for some time. The plan is an extension of the expressway from Shiodome in Shimbashi to the Toranomon 1-22 to 1-26 area and a road extending from there right up to the Kasumigaseki and JT buildings. The design of the building in question was up until now just a 205 m tall grey box located at the expresway exit, with two other buildings nearby. I much prefer this new design, but I haven't found any renderings online for this building. I am interested to know where Seven stars got this information.

That's right, this picture was taken before Mid-Town was built. If you look to the right of Roppongi Hills you can see the Shinjuku skyline in the background, and directly under it you can see a dark space, about halfway down, to the right of the brightly lit road. That's the construction site.

Nice shoots...By the way any news about the Nishi-Shinjuku project? Lately I have been in Shinjuku and I noticed that the area where the building is supposed to be built is still full of houses...It seems that the project can`t never be done in 2 years (according to the project completed in 2010).

I got the book and I have updated the renderings in the second post with some photos from it. I have also updated the building information somewhat.

According to the book, it seems like the original design for the Nishi-Shinjuku 3-chome redevelopment has been abandoned in favour of the alternate design. This still looks like a preliminary rendering though, so I think the designs are likely change somewhat. It has a proposed completion date of 2012, but no idea when they plan to start construction.

Related to your philosofical talk on Tokyo skyline I would like to add two words. I totally agree with you that Tokyo hasn t any super high building as landmark but the new sumida tower and Nishi Shinjuku projet would probably change drastically the face of this city. I heard that the central post office in marunouchi is going to be replaced by a skyscraper...any confirmation ???
Thank you for posting the pictures of Gakuen ...that building is really really beautiful.

Some updates:
Toyosu 3-chome Block 8-4 Plan and Kanda-Sugitacho Plan are now under construction.

Some buildings received their official names:
Yurakucho Station Front First Zone Redevelopment Project is now YURAKUCHO ITOCiA,
Nihombashi Ningyocho 1-Chome Redevelopment is now Regale Nihombashi-Ningyocho (at least that's my guess on how you spell リガーレ),
and Crest Forme Shiba Tower was inexplicably renamed to Crest Prime Tower Shiba.

ThinkPark Tower and Crest Prime Shiba Tower are probably finished now but I will have to check that out first.
Kasumigaseki Common Gate, Park Tower Meguro, Nihonkaku Redevelopment Project Residential Building, YURAKUCHO ITOCiA and Yaesu 1-chome Plan are all scheduled to be completed in September, so I'll have to check them all out too.

I'm particularly interested in the proposed Toranomon-Roppongi Area Redevelopment mixed-use tower, because it is one of the few towers that dares to defy the fear of round edges that seems to pervade through much of Tokyo in recent years. I think it is a fairly nice looking building.

To be honest i prefer the second project for Toranomon Roppongi...It is supposed to be a 250 meter right?
Just yesterday I read on the newspaper that probably the land price are going to be down from now on...do you think this will have an impact on the construction boom Tokyo is facing?

You mean the Shimbashi-Toranomon one, right? It looks pretty good too. I'm just glad this one is not a simple box, or another one with some dull right-angle setbacks, which it could easily have been.

Is it true that these two buildings have an observatory?
An other question: the Shinbashi-Toranomon building where exactly will be located?
Thanks.

LeeWilson
Nov 11, 2007, 11:20 AM
At least one of the two towers has an observation deck. I plan to go up there when I have a chance and the weather is nice. Since the humidity is gone, the view should be nicer.

The Shinbashi-Toranomon building will be built right here (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=%E6%B8%AF%E5%8C%BA%E8%99%8E%E3%83%8E%E9%96%80%EF%BC%91%E4%B8%81%E7%9B%AE%EF%BC%92%EF%BC%95&ie=UTF8&ll=35.667251,139.749355&spn=0.008594,0.014462&z=16&om=1). It seems like it's going to replace the Toranomon 34 MT Building and Toranomon 17 Mori Building.

ohh thanks for the information...Wooww I really hope you will share your pictures..
Concerning Shinbashi-Toranomon seems that it will be very visible from the bay area even the shiodome buildings..What do you think about the shape itself? and the location? It seems to me that the position is kind of 中途半端...I mean, it is not in shiodome neither in roppongi ...

LeeWilson
Nov 12, 2007, 10:29 AM
It seems like it is fairly close to Kasumigaseki. The closest station is Toranomon, which is right by the Kasumigaseki building.

I think it looks interesting, and will be a nice addition to the skyline. But really I'm glad someone in Tokyo is willing to take a chance with something other than a box.

Looking at my panorama taken from the Rainbow Bridge, it will probably be visible just to the left of the Toshiba Building. Anyway we'll have to wait a couple years to see how it will look.

LeeWilson
Nov 18, 2007, 1:37 PM
Bad news...upon further investigation it appears that the observation deck in the North Tower is for building tenants only. There seems to be a little bit of work still going on in the base of the South Tower so I couldn't really look around, but it seems to be straight offices with no observation deck either.

The grand total for 2007 is 34 highrises of 99 m or more completed, including Tokyo's new tallest, the Mid-Town Tower. For Tokyo, this has been the most productive year ever for the 99 m and up category.

I have not been around much for the past two months due to work and travel, but I will try to update the front page of this post soon.

It only looks short because of the angle I took those photos from and because it's not completed yet, as well as the fact that it's hard to understand how many floors tall it is. I see it every day as I cross a street on my way to work, and it's looking fairly tall these days. They are now partially finished that round part near the top.

It's really a tall building to be build in such limited space, most surrounding buildings will hinder it if one is to look from nearby.

I've done just a small update. I've added the most recently completed buildings, bringing the total to 13. I still need to update the renderings and add some newer proposed buildings, as well as verify the construction status of several other buildings.

Not really Tokyo but still in the metro, I was over by Ichikawa station the other day and their building some huge apartment building there.
They have a big sign with the floor number every 5 floors and I could count them up to at least the 45th floor, it’s not topped out so my guess it will be 50+ floors when finished.
Does anyone know anything about this project?

It would be interesting to see what else is going up around the Tokyo metro, a couple stations down from Ichikawa there was another very large project maybe 40+ floors going up but I couldn’t catch the station name.

Edit - I found the link to this project. ->http://www.ichikawa45.com/top.html

Its 2 towers
Tower A - 45 floors 160 meters.
Tower B - 37 floors 130 meters

Tower B is topped out and the crain has come down, Tower A is on the top floor.
I'll try to grab some pics.

heres the details if anyone can read Japanese ->http://www.ichikawa45.com/i-link/outline.html

Marunouchi Park Building, # 8 from the above list.

From Roppongi Hills
Park Court Akasaka The Tower, #14 from the above list. It looks to be on about the 39-40th floor so almost there.

This one went up in front of Roppongi Hills in what seemed like a few months at the most. I have no info on it but looks to be 13-14 floors and should be open by October.

Tokyo Mid Town, Tokyo's tallest Building.
I'm wondering whats going to get built on that large peice of cleared land.

And one from the Metro, Chiba Central Tower well on its way. It should be 43 floors when finished.

Thanks. I've been busy and had a lot of stuff to do, so I haven't had a chance to really update the first page at all. I'll try to update it soon.

Has anyone living in Tokyo heard updated information on Nishi-Shinjuku 3-Chome Redevelopment?

It has never happened, and likely won't.
