How did you do it? The colors are reminiscent of high dynamic range, but it's a night photo. Can HDR be done at night?

yeah, but only in the right conditions and on certain subjects... well lit subjects at close range can work, but something wide like a skyline shot just doesn't have enough light... you might get the skyline itself to look decent, but the night sky will be too far gone...

one thing i don't care for is how hard the hdr/tone mapping process seems to be on quality.. you lose that smooth but crisp image for a noisy pixilated one.. basically you're trading file quality for a more evenly exposed frame... once its been cleaned up and resized it looks halfway ok, but it just urks me because i know what this camera/lens combo is capable of producing.. i feel like i may as well just slap the kit back on it..

after dealing with this issue for a while i started to question whether or not hdr was worth it.. and i'm honestly starting to think its not.. in some cases, yes.. and it can be fun... but for the most part, I can achieve the same thing i'm trying to accomplish with hdr by simply shooting RAW, which is how these three were shot.. i finally experienced how powerful a RAW file can be.. just another one of those things i had to learn on my own... something i already knew, but had to experience first hand to fully grasp it.. the amount of control you have over the file is pretty impressive.. really all you need.. good stuff.. (:

^Thanks for the in-depth explanation. I have another question, J. I've started taking night shots in manual mode because the night mode produces underexposed photos. I understand how to control the shutter speed and its effect, but I'm still in the dark on which aperture to use to match it. In other words, how do you know which aperture to use with a given shutter speed. The same goes for ISO. Here's a shot from tonight.

Looks like you've got it pretty well figured out though! Nice shot!

I got a preview of the NFL's opening kickoff game lightshow that will occur tomorrow (thursday night). I was down at Heinz Field for the Rib fest and noticed some curious lightning apparatus on the Fort Duquesne bridge. At first I was disappointed because I wouldnt be in Pittsburgh tomorrow and I would miss the photographic event. However, a few hours later they began to test the whole rig out. More later...

^Nice choice of background for the shallow DOF. It's not ostentatious enough to usurp attention from the statues in the foreground but still intriguing enough to be noticed. What exactly does it consist of?

Upward
Sep 30, 2006, 4:21 AM
Thanks. I really like those pictures.

The blurred background consists of light coming through trees (the first picture) and reflecting off leaves (the second picture). These were converted to b&w by taking just the blue channel, which really brought out contrast in the background.

They were both taken at f/4 (wide-open) toward the longer end of a 70-200mm lens.

Some more pictures of the statues (including the color versions of the B&W ones above).

I thought shooting these would be an interesting way to practice portraiture, because I could move around them and try different backgrounds. Statues are much easier than people since they don't move! :D

http://webfiles.uci.edu/cfagan/ssp/campus/IMG_3384.jpg

Normally, the positioning of the trees would be a problem, but I think this shot works because they're so far out of focus
http://webfiles.uci.edu/cfagan/ssp/campus/IMG_3387.jpg

http://webfiles.uci.edu/cfagan/ssp/campus/IMG_3388.jpg

Here, the background was positioned so that it's practically consumed by shadow in addition to being blurred.
http://webfiles.uci.edu/cfagan/ssp/campus/IMG_3396.jpg

I love the quality of the "bokeh" produced by the 70-200 f/4 L lens, even if f/4 isn't extremely fast. I would probably pee my pants if I got to use a lens like a 135mm f/2 L or an 85mm f/1.2 L. :D

These are in Alrich Park in the middle of the UC Irvine campus. Here's a shot looking toward the center of the park.
