Renovation of the John R. Park Building is now complete.
During nearly 11 months of construction, the aging building received exterior improvements and a much-needed seismic upgrade.
The historic building, located at the top of Presidents' Circle, is 95 years old. It houses the offices of U President Michael Young and other administrators.
The original roof of the Park Building was not secured to the walls and could have caused significant damage to the building in the event of an earthquake. The roof has been nailed down and the building’s internal structure strengthened.
Other renovations to the Park Building include fire protection and sprinkler systems, an improved limestone facade and refurbished windows. The bronze statue of John R. Park was also fully restored. The original limestone exterior, constructed with stone from Sanpete County, has been patched with more durable limestone from Wisconsin. The newly installed copper sheet-metal flashings on the roof direct water away from the building and protect the new facade.

PARK CITY -- From New York to Beijing to Bora Bora, St. Regis resorts are considered top-quality, luxury accommodations. The company's newest location is right up Parley's Canyon."
"Everything is custom-made for St. Regis. The window coverings, furnishings are designed to make the suite flow," said Stephanie Fischer, spokeswoman for St. Regis.
That gives you an idea of what the rest of the 181 rooms will look like when they're complete. Crews are working around the clock to get this new resort and open by October.
The project's developer, Stan Castleton, says besides bringing jobs to Utah, this resort will bring a level of luxury Utah has never seen.
"Every floor will have a butler to cater to the guests. Regardless of what their needs are, they'll try to deal with it," Castleton said.
There are 181 guest rooms, all for sale; 70 percent of which are already sold. The idea is the owner will allow St. Regis to rent out their rooms.
When the resort is complete, guests will enjoy one of the largest spas in the state and a funicular that will transport guests upon arrival to the upper resort levels.
A celebrity chef is also opening a restaurant here. "Our chef is Jean-Georges, a world-reknown chef, and [he] loves to ski!" Castleton said.
The price to own this luxury: The one bedroom suite costs $1.5 million; :2cents: the bigger suites go up to $4 million.
If you don't have millions to buy, you can rent the rooms. During peak seasons, they go for upwards of $1,000 a night; off-season, they're around $300 a night.

Seven businesses set to open in South Jordan's Daybreak community
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QC6XYwOVKyM/SHV0jC9CiqI/AAAAAAAAATI/nVo0aBUVSuY/S1600-R/Daybreak+Today+Title+Bar+New.JPG
Commerce » SoDa Row Village Center will feature a cafe, barbershop, children's clothing.
By Paul Beebe
The Salt Lake Tribune
Inhabitants of the Daybreak planned community in South Jordan, now numbering 8,000 people, are finally getting some commercial and retail company.
They'll be served by seven businesses, including a bank, a gym and a couple of eating establishments, set to open in the new SoDa Row Village Center on Daybreak Parkway, Scott Schwendiman, commercial development manager for Kennecott Land, said Friday.
The businesses are ...
» Black Diamond Gymnastics and Sports Center. The Park City-based company will occupy nearly 17,000 square feet of space.
Black Diamond plans a soft opening in mid-August, about a month before the center formally opens Sept. 19.
» San Gelato Cafe. The cafe will serve Italian ice cream, panini, sorbets and other food items in a 2,000-square-foot space. San Gelato will open sometime between Sept. 1 and Sept. 15.
» Tio's Mexican Restaurant. The 2,600-square-foot restaurant will serve lunch and dinner. It, too, will open after Sept. 1.
» Oopsie Daily. The children's store will sell clothes, shoes, furniture and gifts. It will occupy 2,200 square feet, with a soft opening in early September.
» Classic Cleaners. The 900-square-foot clothes cleaner will provide pickup and drop-off service. Its opening is planned for sometime between Sept.1 and Sept. 15.
» Guy's Barbershop. The one-chair shop will offer haircuts and straight razor shaves in a 228-square-foot space. Guy's will open in August.
»Zions Bank. The Zions branch office will occupy a building adjacent to SoDa Row. No opening date was announced.
SoDa Row consists of 68,000 square feet of space in five buildings. More tenants are expected to be announced in coming weeks.
"This group represents 37 percent of the [leasable] space. If everything were to happen that I know of today, we will be at 72 percent in the next four to six weeks," Schwendiman said.
Kennecott Land plans to build a 50,000-square-foot office building at the center in one or two years. The center also has retail pads and sites that could add another 20,000 to 50,000 square feet in the future.
About 2,000 houses in Daybreak are occupied. Kennecott Land expects to build 20,000 residences with a population of 45,000 people.
"The long-term plans for more homes and businesses make it the perfect site for us," said Brady Tanner, who is opening his third Classic Cleaners.

Daybreak is about to become the home to seven new locally-owned and operated businesses. Kennecott Land officially announced the tenants for the new SoDa Row mixed use commericial section of Daybreak. Daybreak residents will now have the chance to walk or ride a short distance to go out to eat, get a haircut, deposit a check, or take the kids to dance or karate lessons. Here is a list of the latest tentants to be contracted for SoDa Row:
Grab a meal
Tio’s Mexican Restaurant - As a decent Mexican resteraunt is not located even close to Daybreak, this place will be a welcome addition. Tio’s is a local Mexican restaurant with one other location currently open in Murray. I asked around about the place in Murray and heard good reviews consisting of authentic food and good service.
San Gelato Café - Gelato in Italian literally means "frozen" and that is what this cafe will mainly serve - Italian icecream. 36 different flavors to be exact. Not in the mood for dessert? Try the a panini, an italian sandwich which has become immensly popular here in America. Pizza, salads, soups, and wraps will also be served at this cafe. Learn more at www.sangelatocafe.com
Flips, Dance, and so much more
Black Diamond Gymnastics - Black Diamond is a Park City based business that will open a second location in Daybreak. It provides gymnastics, dance, cheer and martial arts. However, the list of activities at this new state of the art facility will be wide ranging. Right Star Academy, an academic preschool and tutoring program, will be integrated into the facility as well. Black Diamond offers unique services. An example? How about the Big Air program. The Big Air program is especially for skiers, boarders, skaters, etc. The curriculum focuses on trampoline and tumbling instruction designed to enhance core strength, air awareness and self-confidence while learning the proper technique of flipping and twisting. Learn more at www.blackdiamondgym.com
Get a Haircut
Guy's Barbershop - A truly local establishment where local owner, Guy Dumas, will provide the traditional hair cutting services as a one-man show. Want to know about the neighborhood and the locals? I would ask him. As part of his job description, he will be more knowledgable about individual residents than anyone.
Kids and Clothes
Oopsie Daisy will be the new children's botique in Daybreak. It will offer distinctive children’s clothes, shoes, gifts and furniture. Not a bad idea considering Daybreak is crawling with youngsters.
The Cleaners
Classic Cleaners is an environmentally aware business with two other locations in the valley. I've personally heard good reviews about the other locations. Usually people mention a quick turn around time and friendly service.
Stash the Cash
Zions Bank - Founded in 1873 in Utah, this bank has been a major entity in Utah business from the beginning. Now a local branch will be located in SoDa Row for the convenience of residents.

Mid-Jodan TRAX Reaches Milestone
The Utah Transit Authority recently announced that the Mid-Jordan TRAX line is now approximatly 40% complete. This milestone was reached this past May as freight trains start using the new TRAX line for deliveries to local businesses. While the trains are using the new line, UTA will be cutting out the old freight line and realigning it to be parallel with the new TRAX line. Once the Mid-Jordan line is finished in late 2011, two lines will be used by TRAX during the day and by the freight trains at night.
When completed, the project will interline with the Sandy/Salt Lake TRAX Line with direct service to the Salt Lake Central Station in downtown Salt Lake City, where it will connect with UTA’s FrontRunner commuter rail system and bus service.

I don't know about you guys, but as much as I enjoy seeing the mountains, when it comes to the skyline... this is my favorite angle.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_vxeUMtl6Dr4/SlAyzt5e3UI/AAAAAAAADtM/KnBLjF_8Tlk/s800/skyline1.jpg
Yeah this is my favorite angle. Or close to it anyway. My true favorite is the view from the S-curve where 4th south switches over to 5th south.
It's a nice shot, but it blocks off a lot of buildings along Main. The second shot and panorama (viewable at SLC's wikipedia) are pretty amazing.
Both are great shots, but for me this angle sets Salt Lake City apart. The Wasatch is iconic without comparison, when it comes to skyline backdrops in North America. Many cities including Salt Lake will continue to add additional and taller towers, but no one will ever be able to match that Wasatch backdrop. I'm anxious to see Tower 1 and The Regent completed, especially from this angle.

Spies like us: NSA to build huge facility in Utah
Civilian jobs » The facility could offer more than 1,000 high-tech jobs for the state.
By Matthew D. LaPlante
The Salt Lake Tribune
Hoping to protect its top-secret operations by decentralizing its massive computer hubs, the National Security Agency will build a 1-million-square-foot data center at Utah's Camp Williams.
The years-in-the-making project, which may cost billions over time, got a $181 million start last week when President Obama signed a war spending bill in which Congress agreed to pay for primary construction, power access and security infrastructure. The enormous building, which will have a footprint about three times the size of the Utah State Capitol building, will be constructed on a 200-acre site near the Utah National Guard facility's runway.
Congressional records show that initial construction -- which may begin this year -- will include tens of millions in electrical work and utility construction, a $9.3 million vehicle inspection facility, and $6.8 million in perimeter security fencing. The budget also allots $6.5 million for the relocation of an existing access road, communications building and training area.
Officials familiar with the project say it may bring as many as 1,200 high-tech jobs to Camp Williams, which borders Salt Lake, Utah and Tooele counties.
It will also require at least 65 megawatts of power -- about the same amount used by every home in Salt Lake City combined. A separate power substation will have to be built at Camp Williams to sustain that demand, said Col. Scott Olson, the Utah National Guard's legislative liaison.
He noted that there were two significant power corridors that ran though Camp Williams -- a chief factor in the NSA's desire to build there.
The NSA bills itself as the home of America's codemakers and codebreakers, but the Department of Defense agency is perhaps better known for its signals intelligence program, which is reported to have the capacity to tap into a significant amount of the world's communications. The agency also has been the subject of significant criticism by civil libertarians, who have accused it of unwarranted monitoring of the communications of U.S. citizens.
The NSA's heavily automated computerized operations have for years been based at Fort Meade, Maryland, but the agency began looking to decentralize its efforts following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Propelling that desire was the insatiable energy appetite of the agency's computers. In 2006, the Baltimore Sun reported that the NSA -- Baltimore Gas & Electric's biggest customer -- had maxed out the local grid and could not bring online several supercomputers it needed to expand its operations.
About the same time, NSA officials, who have a long-standing relationship with Utah based on the state Guard's unique linguist units, approached state officials about finding land in the state on which to build an additional data center.
Olson said NSA officials also seemed drawn to Utah's increasing reputation as a center of technical industry and the area's more traditional role as a transportation hub.
"They were looking at secure sites, where there could be a natural nexus between organizations and where space was available," he said. "The stars just kind of came into alignment. We could provide them everything they need."
The agency is building a similar center in San Antonio at the site of a former Sony microchip plant.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, the longest-serving member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, refused to answer questions about the project. Officials from Hatch's office said they were not at liberty to discuss a classified matter, though it is referenced in several public documents and has been spoken about openly by state officials for the past week.
NSA officials also declined to comment immediately on the project, but pledged to answer questions later this week.

Utah will host new $1.9 billion NSA spy center
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705314456,00.html?pg=2
...In response to Deseret News inquiries, the NSA provided a written statement saying that after "evaluation of several potential data-center locations throughout the United States, Camp Williams in Utah emerged as the best choice of location."
The agency added, "Over the coming months the project-management team will begin the design phase and this will be followed by the issuance of a request for proposal in order to competitively select a developer for the project."
The only description the NSA itself offered of the data center in its statement is that it will be "a specialized facility that houses computer systems and supporting equipment."
Such computer-assisted NSA spy operations for years have been based at Fort George G. Meade, Md., just outside Washington, D.C.
However, the Baltimore Sun reported in 2006 that the operations at Fort Meade had maxed out the electric capacity of the Baltimore area's power grid — and the NSA was then unable to install some new supercomputers for fear of blowing out the electrical infrastructure of the area.
So the agency began looking for ways to decentralize operations. In 2007, it announced plans to build a second data center in San Antonio. The Utah center will now be the NSA's third...
New NSA center unveiled in budget documents
Function® » The security agency is set up to collect intelligence on foreign threats
http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_12744661
The National Security Agency was so confident that its nearly $2 billion plan for a new data center in Utah would be approved by Congress that it began designing the facility last November.
NSA budgeting documents also indicate that the design of the 1-million-square-foot center should be completed by February, with building to begin in June on a project that could mean thousands of construction jobs for a state that, like many others, has been stuck in a building lull...

Overall Zion's is looking to be a great addition. I know a lot of people want taller buildings for Provo, but still, most cities don't get 8-9 story buildings as it is.

I walked through Grand America's beveled-glass and brass doors and entered a lavish wonderland of opulent amenities befitting the royal guests. I was immediately encased in elegant luxury. My eyes darted about, absorbing the gilded images before me: Italian marble floors and walls, English wool carpets, and French furniture and tapestries all illuminated by the Murano crystal chandeliers. In addition to the sumptuous interior decor, the hotel staff and their genuine smiles greeted me at the door. All of this elegance and I had only entered the lobby!

Well, in that case here are some photos that I took yesterday. I thought it was interesting that the main sidewalk through Temple Square is all dug up. They're installing pipes that will keep the sidewalk warm during winter to keep ice from forming. Anyway, here are the pics...

Utah Theater to house new film center
Arts » City agrees to buy historic venue across street from planned Broadway playhouse.
http://www.deseretnews.com/photos/midres/5206159.jpg
Deseret News archive
By Rosemary Winters
Visions of a film center on Main Street now include brick and mortar.
Salt Lake City's Redevelopment Agency agreed Tuesday to buy the historic Utah Theater and neighboring retail spaces for $7 million.
The shuttered buildings -- at 144 S. and 156 S. Main -- are owned by developer Rick Howa and are across the street from the city's planned Broadway-style theater.
"A film center is central to downtown's cultural corridor," Jason Mathis, executive director of the Downtown Alliance, said in a statement. "The Utah Theater has languished for many years, and now there is movement and a clear plan going forward as part of a larger vision for Main Street. This is great news."
The Salt Lake Film Society, SLC Film Center and Spy Hop Productions want to create a venue for independent films and art exhibitions that could be used by the Sundance Film Festival and other groups. The venture has been pushed by, among others, Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zions Bank.
In April, Salt Lake County adopted an expansive cultural master plan that includes the film center as one of 15 "master plan projects" recommended for county funds.
The Utah Theater was passed over last year in the capital's casting call for a space for a 2,400-seat Broadway playhouse. Mayor Ralph Becker instead picked the Newspaper Agency Corp. building across Main.
A renovation of the Utah Theater for the center has been pegged at roughly $25 million.
The theater debuted in 1918 as a stage for vaudeville performances. Later it became a movie house, but has not functioned as one since Cineplex Odeon left in the 1980s.
"It's had a very important place on Main Street for decades," said City Councilman Eric Jergensen, who is chairman of the Redevelopment Agency Board. "We have the ability to take it and rejuvenate it as a very important place on Main Street for decades to come."

That's great news. I'm especially excited about the Utah Theater.
Excellent news about the Utah Theater!! A film center will be an ideal use for the building. I hope that both it, and the 'broadway' theater are able to progress quickly. We'll soon have a fantastic arts district downtown!
The city council also voted unanimously to send the bond for the public safety building to the ballot in November.
 Wow, that was my fondest wish of all, to see the old Utah (Pantages)Theater become a film center. That is FANTASTIC!!!
We were talking about what would be excellent additions to Main as a compliment to CCC. This is another incredible piece of the puzzle. First, a world class theater for the largest touring Broadway productions, and now a major historic gem to be restored as a film center. It just doesn't get any better for Main and adding to what will be a major arts district. This is also going to have a major impact for downtown Salt Lake's presence during Sundance. I predict Redford and Sundance will be very anxious to push downtown in order to take pressure off of Park City, which is bursting at the seams.
This is awesome news! Especially since I've had many dealings with Spy Hop Productions (in fact I just got home from a night shoot for one of their short films). They exposed me to much more of the filmmaking process than the UofU has yet... although, that might change this coming semester.
  That is fantastic news regarding both the Gallivan Center and the Utah Theater...
...As for the Utah Theater being turned into a film center all I can do is :D While I'm guessing Sundance has made no commitments to using the Utah, I don't see why they wouldn't. As Delts said, Park City is busting at the seems and I honestly anticipate the Utah being a site for at least one or two large premiers each year, it is larger than the Egyptian, yet still has a unique historic appeal to it, not to mention that downtown SLC is much more equipped to handle the large crowds associated with these premiers. With CCC and it's high end shopping, Utah Performing Arts Center (2,500 seat theater) on the same block of Main, a high end boutique hotel steps away (Monaco) and a newly renovated Gallivan Center a block down, this will be a prime location for Sundance FF expansion.
SLC will be hitting a critical mass of recently completed renovation, refurbishment and new construction just as the economy recovers. Sounds like it'll be a perfect time to party. :upload_71700:
...I'm very excited about the Utah Theatre...especially after seeing those pics of the interior on this forum about a year back. I'm glad it will be used, hopefully it will be restored as well. That and the "Broadway Theatre" across the street will go a long way toward creating that "Cultural Arts Corridor" they're always talking about.

Revised Gallivan Center makeover moving forward
Agency approves $8 million makeover for Gallivan Center
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705316866/Revised-Gallivan-Center-makeover.html
After a few tweaks — and a six-month delay — Salt Lake leaders are moving forward with an $8 million makeover of the Gallivan Center.
Tuesday, the city's Redevelopment Agency approved a plan to construct a two-story building along 200 South, expand the center's amphitheater and build an at-grade ice rink...
...The two-story building will be mostly glass and will hold enough restrooms to handle 5,000 people. It also will house skate-rental and banquet facilities.
...The six-month process gleaned a few alterations from the original redesign, including a shade structure over the rink, a tower that acts as a terminus to Regent Street and a few landscaping improvements...

Music fans will get more elbow room - or at least a better view of the stage. Brides and grooms can greet well-wishers in a new, modern reception space. And all Gallivan Center goers are likely to appreciate this planned amenity: public restrooms...
... Construction will start next March, said Gallivan Director Talitha Day.
And as soon as the 2011 Twilight Concert Series, attendees will be able to see national music acts in a grassy amphitheater with triple the space of the current venue. Stereo towers will be installed near the back to improve

Utah Theater to retake center stage
Downtown SLC » City Creek, Broadway playhouse and now a film center could be main players in a revived Main Street.

Layers of chipped, ornate molding in the lobby and broken light bulbs on the marquee hint at glitzier times for the Utah Theater. Shuttered for two decades, the 1918-built playhouse languishes as a reminder of the decline of Salt Lake City's Main Street.
But, like Main, the Utah Theater is on the cusp of a renaissance.
Salt Lake City's Redevelopment Agency has agreed to terms to buy the show house and adjacent storefronts for $7 million. The sale could be finalized this fall after the agency completes a building inspection and lines up financing.
Then the one-time vaudeville stage could return as a first-of-its-kind-in-Utah film center.
http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site297/2009/0715/20090715__filmcenter_0716~2_GALLERY.jpg

"Main Street is coming back," said Rick Howa, the developer who has owned the Utah Theater for the past decade. "I feel good about downtown Salt Lake for the first time in a long, long time."
The Salt Lake Film Society, SLC Film Center and Spy Hop Productions want to transform the Utah Theater -- provided they can raise funds for a $25 million-plus renovation -- into a venue for independent films, media-arts exhibits and educational programs.
"I can think of very few bits of information that have come forward in the past 20 years about Main Street that hold as much promise and excitement for downtown," said Stephen Goldsmith, a former Salt Lake City planning director and a professor at the University of Utah. "This can become a magnet to diversify the offerings in the heart of the capital city."
Goldsmith predicts a "spillover" effect on Main Street. A film center could generate new camera shops and spawn housing geared toward film professionals. A revived Utah Theater, Goldsmith added, would draw a diverse group of people to Main, breathing new life into the streetscape.
Across the street, the city envisions a 2,400-seat Broadway-style theater. A block to the north, the gigantic City Creek Center already is reshaping Main Street.
"If we're able to develop this [film center]," Mayor Ralph Becker said, "we really will have a wonderful coalescing of performance art venues in downtown Salt Lake City."
http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site297/2009/0715/20090715__filmcenter_0716~6_GALLERY.jpg
The ornate columns and ceilings inside the Utah Theater. (Paul Fraughton / The Salt Lake Tribune)
The goals are lofty. The Salt Lake Film Society, which now runs the Broadway and Tower theaters, would screen first-run independent and foreign flicks at the new Utah Theater screens. The SLC Film Center would bring its slate of community screenings, which play now at the city's Main Library and other venues. And Spy Hop would bring its training facilities for teen filmmakers.
The proposal laid out by the three nonprofit groups also envisions educational programs in media arts, Sundance Film Festival screenings and archives, offices for nonprofit and government film organizations, and even temporary office space for visiting movie productions.
Other centers -- such as Maryland's AFI Silver Theatre and the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, N.Y. -- mix first-run film exhibitions with community programs. But bringing in the industry "hasn't been done anywhere else," Tori Baker, director of the Salt Lake Film Society, said. "This may be the model for art houses in the future."
The question mark is money. A similar proposal was pitched during the 2009 Legislature, with a request for a $25 million bond, but it fizzled. The total cost of the center is expected to top $25 million but that amount could cover the theater renovation.
Salt Lake County Councilman Joe Hatch said the project now has a better shot at state funds, noting some legislators were hesitant to fund a film center that lacked a location.
"Now the city has stepped up and provided property," Hatch said. "That's a big step going forward."
Hatch, a "film fanatic" and member of the SLC Film Center board, said such a center would help lure moviemakers to Utah, which already offers spectacular natural backdrops.
"A great industry that brings really great jobs is the sort of thing we like," Hatch said. "For a very modest amount of economic-development bucks, you get a huge return."
The county, which has identified the film center as one of its top cultural projects, doesn't have the resources to fund the project now, Hatch said. But it could in a few years as City Creek Center starts generating sales taxes and payments for the Real Salt Lake soccer stadium shrink.
The film center will happen "soon, if we get a positive commitment from the state," Hatch said. "It will happen later if that doesn't happen -- but it will happen."
Details of the deal
Salt Lake City's Redevelopment Agency has 90 days for "due diligence," including an appraisal and environmental and structural studies.
The agency then has 60 days to decide on the purchase.
If the sale goes ahead, the city pays $7 million to Rick Howa's companies for buildings at 144 S. and 156 S. Main.
While three nonprofits iron out plans to create a film center, the city could spruce up the theater's facade and bring businesses into the storefronts.

'Downtown Rising' gets a new look
http://www.downtownrising.com/images/headers/rising_banner.png
By Keith McCord
SALT LAKE CITY -- If there's a positive economic story out there, all you have to do is look to Salt Lake's downtown. Construction cranes are everywhere, hundreds of people are working, and new businesses are opening their doors.
The message is big, bold and clear: Downtown Rising. Now, where ever you go, you won't be able to miss it. It's the "rallying phrase," if you will, about the future of Utah's largest city.
New buildings are certainly rising in the downtown area now, as City Creek and many other projects begin to take shape.
Individual projects include:
• Public Market: Permanent structure to partner with Downtown Farmers Market
• Film Center: RDA recently signed agreement for building
• Utah Performance Center on Main: Bids under review for development
• TRAX to the Airport: Ground broken
• More residential building downtown
• Strengthened tie with the University of Utah, SLCC, BYU Salt Lake
• OC Tanner HQ moving into renovated Hansen Planetarium: Opens late September or early October
• Leonardo moving ahead: City released bond and renovation underway
• Improvements at Pioneer Park"This is much bigger than just on light posts or kiosks or some of the building wraps, but we are trying to capture the momentum that's being generated downtown," said Jason Mathis, executive director of the Downtown Alliance.
From Chopper 5, it's easy to see numerous new buildings; some still in the early stages, others almost completed. A million and a half dollars are spent each day related to all the work currently going on.
As things start to take shape, others are being caught in the momentum and want to be a part of it.
"Small businesses are populating Main Street in ways that we haven't seen in a really long tome, Mathis said.
For example, a new brew pub is opening up this week. Another restaurant across the street is coming soon. An international art gallery is operating.
What is Downtown Rising?
Downtown Rising is a vision for downtown Salt Lake City. A new age of unprecedented investment in the downtown area prompted business leaders to consider the broader implications of an array of significant, but individual, developments. Downtown Rising was created to be the glue to link those disparate parts together. "We've tracked 24 small businesses that have opened up in the last four months in the central business district; so a pretty small geographic area that's really flourishing," Mathis said.
A couple of months ago, the Salt Lake Chamber and the Downtown Alliance approached Infinite Scale Design Group to create the "look" that will bring added attention to all this.
"It really allows it to pop in the environment, and we really wanted to get that message across in a simple, clean way," said Amy Lukas, of Infinate Scale Design Group.
Downtown Rising: Physically it is for sure, but there's more to it.
"Downtown Rising is really a statement of where we want to be in the future," Mathis said. "It's really forward thinking and focused on where do we want to be in five years from now? Ten years from now? Forty years from now?"
It's careful long-term planning for Utah's capitol city.

Brief: St. Regis funicular to be installed today
The first and only funicular at a North American ski resort will be installed at 8 a.m. this Saturday near the Deer Valley Resort parking lot. The funicular cabins have been flown in from Switzerland and will be installed with the use of a 500-ton crane onto the tracks.
The funicular will ascend 500 vertical feet in just 90 seconds to the primary hotel building.

St. Regis Deer Crest should be ready by ski season - The condo hotel will have luxury après-ski offerings open to the public
..."There's a good possibility that the St. Regis and the Montage still under development will join Stein Eriksen Lodge in earning a five-star rating. If that occurs, Deer Valley will be the only resort anywhere with three five-star hotels, he said"...
by Andrew Kirk.
In many ways the new St. Regis Deer Crest Resort scheduled to open this fall resembles an amusement park for grown-ups with good taste.
It looks and almost feels like a fairy-tale castle, is jam-packed with restaurants, boutiques, wine rooms, a spa, a gym, a two-tiered pool open year-round and even has its own 90-second ride a European funicular transporting guests and visitors from the Deer Valley Resort parking lot to the hotel.

General manager Michael Hatzfeld and St. Regis spokesperson Mark Fischer lead a tour of the 12-acre resort in Deer Crest on Monday. Photo by David Ryder/Park Record
And yes, it's ski-in/ski-out.
Developer Stan Castleton said the land in Deer Crest has long been master planned for a hotel of some sort. Many major hotel brands were interested in the site, but Castleton made the decision early on to go with St. Regis because of its reputation for luxury and exclusivity. The original St. Regis in New York City established in 1904 is still a top-performing hotel, he said.
"It's been a long time coming, but it's going to be worth it. I predict it'll be everything we hoped it to be," he said.
One offering St. Regis believes it can offer to Deer Valley's existing amenities is a world-class après-ski atmosphere.
The signature St. Regis Bar will seat about 85 and will boast a mural similar to those found in the other dozen-plus locations. The hotel will be home to J&G Grill, celebrity-chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant in the Intermountain West. Both will be accessible from a patio connecting to Deer Hollow Run overlooking the pool to one side and Main Street in the distance on the other.
The suites are for sale as condos, and owners will have the option to add their units to the rental pool. This has become standard in luxury hotels because the market will no longer support top-rated hotels using the old model, Castleton explained.
For owners, the resort will function as an exclusive gated community accessible through the Deer Crest entrance. For hotel guests and resort visitors, the funicular building is the first thing they'll see from Deer Valley resort. The ride is free, fast and drops them off outside the restaurant and bar, general manager Michael Hatzfeld explained.
Skiers at Deer Valley can access the patio, restaurant, bar and other public amenities from the ski run.
The resort is full of artistic elements as well. The side looking down toward Jordanelle has a man-made waterfall feature with other water features inside creating the impression of a stream. The patio will be encircled by aesthetic flames in the evening. A glass sculpture will greet guests near the front desks throwing light from the fireplace around the two-story atrium. The mural in the bar will reflect Park City's location or heritage. Even the funicular machinery will be lit by a chandelier creating a visual display seen from the parking lot.
The rooms are decorated with a décor that reflects the West, but still maintains touches traditional to all St. Regis facilities, Hatzfeld explained.
The resort also contains a ballroom for receptions, banquets and business meetings. Other business amenities include a high-tech boardroom, 7,000-square-feet of available meeting space and an additional 7,000 on two outdoor terraces.
The entire resort sits on 12 acres, is 11 stories tall and has about 114 to 181 guest rooms including 67 suites with 26 private residences filling the top 4 floors the very top ones having a slight view of Jordanelle Reservoir.
Even though it's a tall building, its location tucked into the mountain gives it privacy, Castleton said.
Interest in the hotel has already raised awareness of Deer Valley Resort and Park City among fans of the brand on the East Coast.
"It adds a different level of luxury to the area," he said.
There's a good possibility that the St. Regis and the Montage still under development will join Stein Eriksen Lodge in earning a five-star rating. If that occurs, Deer Valley will be the only resort anywhere with three five-star hotels, he said.
Castleton said St. Regis chose Park City for the same reasons he did untapped potential. With this community's summer offerings and proximity to the airport, brands like St. Regis are recognizing that Park City will only grow in popularity.
People with second homes in resorts want to get to them quickly and not spend their vacation time traveling, he said.
"I've always believed Park City will be seen by the world as a year-round attraction like Sun Valley," he said.
Hatzfeld said Aspen is 90 percent full in summer. That can happen to Deer Valley, he said.
The resort currently hosts about 450 construction workers every day, and will be hiring its own staff soon, Hatzfeld said.

U Hospital's $200 million expansion completed
daily utah chronicle
http://www.dailyutahchronicle.com/polopoly_fs/1.1775688!image/3778147401.jpg
The opening of the new hospital wing marks a new era in patient
care, the hospital’s number one priority. The expansion has allowed
the hospital to become more patient-centered and helps to better
serve the community with its Patient Care Pavilion, a wing with
private rooms that better ensure their health and privacy, said
U President Michael K. Young.
Another new addition to the hospital is a pod nursery, which helps
to keep nurses closer to the mothers and their babies. Last January,
the hospital was the first in Utah to become a World Health
Organization- and UNICEF-certified Baby Friendly Hospital,
said Elizabeth Smith, a pre-natal education coordinator. To
receive the designation, the hospital staff became better
educated in breastfeeding support and providing mothers with
the knowledge of how to give their newborn food.
As the Intermountain West’s only academic health care system,
the hospital alone provides Utah citizens with not only medical
treatment, but student medical training without having to travel
out of state. It is also home to teams of international research
facilities to advance the well-being of the patients, said Lorris
Betz, senior vice president U health sciences and CEO of U Health
Care.

Despite recession, downtown Salt Lake is rising
By Aaron Falk
The Deseret News

A banner with the slogan "rising" hangs along 100 South across from a construction site. Keith Johnson, Deseret News
The yellow and red banners hanging on streetlights and buildings make the claim, but the proof is in the construction crews and cranes, the coming soons and the grand openings.
Downtown is rising.
"It feels different; it feels alive," said Jason Mathis, executive director of the Salt Lake City Downtown Alliance. "Something special is happening in Salt Lake that isn't happening in other metropolitan areas."
While a slumping economy has halted projects from New York to Portland, Salt Lake City's downtown is experiencing its biggest boom in decades, officials said.
http://www.deseretnews.com/photos/midres/1549913.jpg
Keith Johnson
At the lead is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' $2 billion City Creek Center, a mix of retail and residential development. But downtown's rising is more than just that, Mathis said.
"Clearly (City Creek) is a big part of that, but there is enormous momentum from that helping to fuel other development," he said.
In recent months, roughly two dozen new businesses have opened shop in the central business district. Among them is Del Vance's Beerhive Pub on Main.
Vance, a New York native, remembers an eerie quiet downtown when he first moved to Salt Lake City.
"You could hear the crickets chirping," he said.
But as he opened the doors to his pub this week, Vance said he believes Main Street is finally coming back to life.
"I've always loved downtown, but Main Street has been sort of a roll of the dice the last 20 years," Vance said. "With the (LDS Church) pumping $2 billion into City Creek, I thought it might finally be the time to roll."
Mathis also points to the 22-story office building going up at 222 S. Main, the $7 million renovation planned for the Gallivan Center and an airport TRAX line as signs of progress in the downtown area.
Salt Lake leaders, meanwhile, are working on opening a Broadway-style theater in the old Newspaper Agency building on Main Street.
And this month, the city's Redevelopment Agency agreed to purchase the Utah Theater, which could be the future home of a Salt Lake film center.
"I've never seen downtown this busy and with this much development going on," said Rick Howa, who owned the theater for more than a decade. "When I was on the Planning Commission in the mid-'80s and early '90s, we always hoped we would see that kind of development."
That's good news for restaurateurs like John Speros, owner of Lamb's Grill. Speros' shop has been on Main Street since the 1930s. And while he said he doesn't know if Salt Lake's downtown can return to the heyday of the 1950s, Speros said he believes in its future.
"We're right in the middle of all that," he said. "Within two or three years, people will be clamoring to get space on Main Street. It will be a hub of activity. It will be the place to be."
Speros hopes more restaurants will open downtown. He doesn't see it as competition, but rather options that will keep diners returning to the area.
A number of the downtown projects — the TRAX line, the theater and City Creek — are scheduled to be completed by 2012. In all, Mathis expects to see about $3 billion pumped into downtown over the next five years.
The Downtown Alliance, meanwhile, will keep pushing its vision for downtown beyond 2012. Mathis hopes to strengthen the identity of a number of small downtown districts while making plans for a convention center hotel, a year-round public market near Pioneer Park and a global exchange place that features a World Trade Center Utah.
"There's a sense that this isn't just a promise for the future, but a promise that's being fulfilled now," Mathis said.

It's much more than just a shopping destination with two new high-rise residential complexes being built with it right now, remodeling and renovating of older buildings, etc. It's more about giving the area a facelift. I'm not really sure what's ironic about that.

Hey SLCMoosy, I imagine that the photographer, "Tucapel" had connections. Judging from his collection on the flickr site, he's probably of a caliber that CCC wanted him to do some promotional work for them. Incredible views aren't they? Gives a definite meaning to the title, "A Room With a View."
In the past we have highlighted some interior renderings of CCC. I'll see if I can find them in the next day or so. Also, don't be shy about going over and asking on the main forum, http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=117672&page=252

-It's ironic (to me) how they mandate certain rules then endorse others breaking said rules in another fashion.
Case in point-
Mormons developing shopping destination
-What's ironic? Forbidden/ looked down upon businesses will undoubtedly occupy said space...can you say Coffee shops/ Lingerie stores/ Hot Topic/ and "teen" stores specializing in less than modest clothing apparel won't show up?
Church's should steer clear of private business activity of this nature IMO.
Having said that. I think this complex will be a great addition to Salt Lake.
delts145

It's more than a great addition to Salt Lake's downtown. CCC, along with the huge amount of attractive development, which has occurred over the past 15 years, is propelling Salt Lake's downtown into easily one of the nations most attractive and elegant. The developments, whether owned and managed by the many civic, government, public, religious or private oraganizations add to the star appeal that Salt Lake City continues to build upon each year. I for one as an international citizen certainly don't begrudge any responsible entity for being exceptional, reposnsible property owners and landlords, whether religious or secular.
Taubman, who is the retail management firm handling the lease tenant transactions, is among the most highly respected firms in the nation in it's respective field. Each tenant will have a well established national or local inventory history. Of course, there won't be a sex toy shop at this center. However, IMO it's pretty silly for anyone to think that somehow the LDS church should not lease property to a tenant who happens to include lingerie in their inventory. I guess to each their own, but to me that is laughable.
The tenant mix will be similar to that found in the Century City Center in West L.A. The difference between CCC and Century City is that City Creek will have more of an historical mix of structures, along with some pretty amazing features, that would drop jaws even in Century City/Beverly Hills.

Not one word of that scramble just responded to what I asked. I don't even know how to make sense of what you just said. Can someone besides delts tell me what the most impressive, jaw dropping elements of this development are? I'm not trying to "hate" on the actual development itself (unlike delts just did to Portland for whatever reason I don't know).
I should also point out that i've seen the virtual tour probably 5 times & I keep trying to find why this is more than just a lifestyle center?
The residential seems nice enough... not jaw dropping, but certainly nice.
The shopping portion seems in my opinion much like any lifestyle center i've ever seen.
I would like someone to address the historical structures being incorporated, I like the sounds of that.

Okstate, I will do my best. I think most importantly, this project is crucial to the revitalization of our downtown. It is adding a 32 story, 20 story and 2 - 10 story condo towers within the 2 blocks. There is also the potential for another condo tower which will be about 20 stories as well. The towers vary widely in design and I think mix well with the development. The old Deseret Tower which was going to be razed is now going to be renovated and continue its use as office space. It sits right on the corner of Main Street and 100 South. See the picture below. The city creek will run through the entire development as well. On the western block of the development will be a fountain that is being designed by the people who did the one's at Bellagio. It should be really nice. Their is also word that there will be a Grand Lux restaurant as part of the development. The main anchors will be Nordstroms and Macey's. There is also talk of making these flagship stores. The old ZCMI facade will also be put back onto Main Street as part of the Macey's store and the old Amussens building facade is also being put back into this development. The finishes are all top of the line, sparing no expense. The brick on the highrises is being laid by hand rather than in a precast. Also, there is no stucco being used. I think until the announcement of the tenants and being able to see it completed, it is very difficult to pass any judgements on what it will be like, because we really have no idea until we see the final product. To Salt Lake City, this is a huge development which will bring further development to the area. It will be very classy and more on the upscale than other types of developments like it from what has been said. I am really excited for the City Creek Center and the change it will bring to downtown Salt Lake City.

^ Delts, you're right. I started with a rant first & shouldn't have. I want to be clear that I have no bad feelings towards SLC or CCC. I just thought it quite strange who was behind it. In my opinion it's like opening a pig farm on Jewish owned land even if the Jewish owners didn't encourage said development. Or an electronics store opening in an Amish financed building. I'm sure the LDS church will & are fantastic commercial real estate business owners & it's certainly a boost to have them in town.
T-Mac, that was a great rundown. I'm glad this development will be built with the upmost detail. One cannot tell that from the virtual tour (at all).

Park City, Utah is on the Verge of Becoming Opulent - a St. Regis and Waldorf-Astoria Set to Open in 2009
St. Regis Resort Hotel and Residence
http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site122/2009/0707/20090707__1biz_Gallery.jpg
By Mike Gorrell, The Salt Lake Tribune McClatchy-Tribune Regional News
- Amid the economic gloominess, Park City is on the verge of becoming more opulent.
Two luxury hotel brands with time-tested pedigrees -- St. Regis and Waldorf-Astoria -- are poised to enter the market: Waldorf-Astoria through the Dakota Mountain Lodge at The Canyons while the St. Regis Deer Crest is in Deer Valley, on a ridge overlooking Snow Park Lodge.
St. Regis Funicular
http://www.hotelchatter.com/files/17697/funicular_srdc.jpg
Farther uphill in Deer Valley's Empire Pass region, construction continues for the luxurious Montage hotel. Although Montage does not have the history of St. Regis or Waldorf-Astoria, having been formed in 2002, it just opened a 201-unit luxury hotel Nov. 17 in the heart of Beverly Hills. Montage Deer Valley is set to open in the winter of 2010-2011.
Nearby, East West Partners is developing Flagstaff, a 37-residence condominium, each with more than 5,000 square feet and full membership in the Talisker Club, part of the Canadian company that owns The Canyons.
Ski #1 Ranked Deer Valley Resort
http://www.deervalleyrealestate.com/cmsimages/banner-dv_living.jpg
The addition of these elite establishments is yet another step in Park City's ascendency into the ranks of international resort communities. To reach that perch, a community must have a mix of nice, really nice and super-nice attractions. Once these hotels open, Park City can boast of having luxury chains with global followings to go along with the home-grown elegance of Stein Eriksen Lodge and other more localized, upscale lodgings.
"These help make us something special," said Summit County Commissioner Bob Richer. "What's
important to Summit County is that we are home to three world-class ski resorts [The Canyons, Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley]. High-end hotels are an amenity that the people who frequent those resorts expect. It's in our economic best interest to make sure a Summit County vacation experience is a special experience for these people."
The Dakota Mountain Lodge and St. Regis projects benefited from being under way before the financial crisis. St. Regis spokesman Mark Fischer said most of that hotel's 27 residences and 64 condo/hotel suites (the latter will be rented when the owners are away) have been sold to an array of buyers -- Hollywood actors, entrepreneurs, residents of Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Kentucky.
"We hit the market at the right time," concurred Dakota Mountain Lodge developer Reza Fakhrieh, saying 95 percent of the 104 units in its first building are sold, along with 23 of the 66 in the second.
In addition, the projects provided work for hundreds in the construction trades industry.
The cachet of being able to cite these brands' presence in the community became evident to Leigh von der Esch earlier this month when the managing director of the Utah Office of Tourism was in New York City to speak with publications as diverse as National Geo and bridal magazines.
"It turned people's heads that we were getting a Montage, a St. Regis, a Waldorf-Astoria," she said. "Utah is clearly known for great skiing, national parks and outdoor adventure. But our image survey from a couple of years ago was not as strong for high-end amenities and entertainment.
"The commitment of these properties shows additional high-end options [that] bring their established brands worldwide with them, which bolsters the already recognized brands of Deer Valley, Alta, Park City, Sundance and Snowbird."
Fakhrieh, executive vice president of DuVal Development, which owns Dakota Mountain Lodge at The Canyons, said his appreciation for what the Park City area has to offer was enhanced when Hilton Hotels Corp. officials vetted his project to see if it was good enough to be part of the Waldorf-Astoria Collection.
"We spent three weeks with the Hilton feasibility study group. They wanted to make sure they were putting their brand on something worth their while," he said.
Goldman Sachs officials came to the same conclusion in helping finance the project, added DuVal founder Lee Hindin. "They really related to the fact people from the West Coast should never fly over Utah any more. There's no need to, not with the access and brands we have."
Those brand names start with Waldorf-Astoria, which will manage the 104 hotel/condominium units in the lodge's first U-shaped building, scheduled to open midspring. Sixty-six more units are in a second planned building. Another brand lined up to increase appeal is Golden Door Spa, which will have 18,000 square feet of space divided into 15 treatment rooms, a fitness center and a beauty salon.
Designed by Architecture Belgique Inc. of Midvale, the three-story structure is oriented to take advantage of the 360-degree views around The Canyons. Its limestone fireplaces, Mohair drapes, curving staircase, two-story water feature and color schemes are geared toward giving Dakota Mountain Lodge a contemporary, sophisticated feel rather than a rustic one.
The lodge also will have a golf course, 15,000 square feet of meeting space, a 7,100-foot ballroom, screening rooms suitable for Sundance Film Festival debuts and a gondola (called Frostwood) that will carry skiers to the The Canyons' base village.
"We didn't cut any corners," Hindin said.
Scheduled to open about the same time, the St. Regis Deer Crest also emphasizes elegance. Its 92 units, many of which can be subdivided to create up to 190 rooms, take up just 50 percent of the 11-story structure's available space. The rest is public space -- a 15,000-square-foot spa, tiered swimming pools, restaurants and bars arranged to engender a feeling that the hotel is a "gathering place," said Fischer.
"Owners will be able to enjoy privacy, but it will be a public hotel with lots of activities," he added.
Nestled into a saddle on a ridge above Snow Park Lodge, the St. Regis Deer Crest's common areas can be reached easily by owners and guests skiing at Deer Valley. "You can walk right in and have lunch or a cocktail," Fischer said, noting that clients will be served by one of the hotel's highlights -- ski butlers.
Another prominent feature will be a funicular, a railway system in which a cable moves tram-like cars on rails up and down the steep slope separating Deer Valley's base from the hotel. Used in hilly European cities, such as the International Olympic Committee's hometown of Lausanne, Switzerland, the funicular can be used by members of the public who want to visit the hotel.
"As you come into Deer Valley, it's the first thing people see next to Snow Park Lodge," said Fischer, expecting the hotel to be a popular destination during Sundance and World Cup skiing competitions. "Deer Crest is a gated community, but we want the public to be able to enjoy this, to come up and have lunch here or a glass of wine."
The arrival of these elite establishments follows last December's opening of The Sky Lodge in Park City. A small luxury hotel that offers one-eighth fractional ownerships of its 33 ultra-modern residences, it is replete with amenities, such as a Japanese spa, a deck with a fire pit overlooking Main Street and bathroom doors adorned with African copper artwork.
"We're looking forward to a full season," said greeter Chris Johnson, expecting the hotel to do better than last year with international visitors, especially since Delta Air Lines started direct flights between Salt Lake City and Paris.
Those well-heeled travelers are just what's needed to survive -- even thrive -- in turbulent times. "Being a luxury hotel, we're doing well," Johnson said.

-whew. Ok, now i'd like to hear you guys response to future retail outside of CCC. Do you think CCC will dominate downtowns activity or does SLC have plenty of equally matched diversions to disperse the pedestrians. I really hope this doesn't become a black hole funneling everyone to the CCC.
I got your point and get what you're saying. The LDS Church has a lot vested in SLC, seeing it (along with members) founded the city, developed it, and has its headquarters there, and wants the area around them and downtown SLC in general, to be an amazing place. Again though I see your point and can see how a church doing that can be weird. But at the same time it's not like the LDS Church is against development or shopping or things like that (they're not Amish), and there's not going to be stores with extremely differing values in the CCC I don't believe.
About retail outside of CCC, Salt Lake has the popular Gateway District, located at the old Union Station downtown, filled with retail, restaurants, performers, apartments, office space, museums, and more (it's actually similar to the CCC in many ways). So that's always an alternative.
