I walked around City Creek today. I am so excited for this to open. There are so
many people just walking around looking at it. The revamp they did in the Food Court is a lot better too.
Here are some photos.

Obviously there is still time and probably more signage to come, but here is a good case study for designing your signs to engage pedestrians vs. cars. This is why low signs and blade signs are a must.
Even though this Forever 21 sign isn't a blade sign, at least it's viewable from the sidewalk (you don't have to look up).
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7049/6834612168_64e3ca1dd1_b.jpg
Coming from the North end of City Creek Center heading South, you would not see that you were approaching a Forever 21.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6980740981_e0829d6173_b.jpg
On this side of the Forever 21 store there are no street level signs or blade signs. What am I approaching or walking by?
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/6834610564_9b0f463f0d_b.jpg
This sign is only viewable from where cars drive by; I'm tilting my body up A LOT from the sidewalk to get this picture.

Shoppers enjoy the grand opening of the City Creek Center in Salt Lake City on Thursday, March 22, 2012. (Laura Seitz, Deseret News)
Yes. The crowds were very manageable. Although there are thousands of people, it was easy to move throughout, and most of the stores were very easy to walk through (Disney had a line to get in, though). It wasn't like black friday at all. The food court at lunch was the most crowded (yay!) and there were basically no tables available inside or in the sun, and every restaurant had a line. I imagine the whole place will be much more crowded on Saturday or maybe this evening.
My favorite store was definitely Restoration Hardware, by far. The salespeople were really nice everywhere too, including the high-end stores. There were musicians all over the place.. in some areas it all kind of combined to make noise. And I'm pretty sure they weren't taking tips, and neither were the human trees (which is just seems to strange if you've ever been to Rome or Barcelona). People were stunned throughout. For me it was kind of just like seeing the final piece of the puzzle.
I really liked the customer service desk with the water running down, and the creek was of course really nice. I thought it kind of odd though that they chose trout instead of some more colorful fish, because they blended in and were quite hard to see. There's probably some ecological reason they did that that I'm not aware of..
The big WET fountain was cool, but perhaps not as much of a spectacle as some of their other installations. It looked nice and everything, it just wasn't as happening as others. At first I didn't even realize it was choreographed to the music (which, BTW, was pretty tasteful; they had some Saint-Saens, Liszt, etc. <3).

I agree with John, the new Restoration Hardware store is just spectacular; it has such a good vibe.
Same with Brooks Brothers; for some reason I just really love that store (I've never been in one before today).
It was pretty interesting to see how much the water features dampen the noise. It really helped turn a crowded mall into a serene experience.
I was standing near the Disney Store during the ribbon cutting ceremony and could hardly hear the people speaking because of the waterfalls.
The store that made me want to dig my eyeballs out was Love Culture :yuck:.

A 6 star shopping destination. The fountain would make Disney happy, very playful.

Salt Lake City celebrates ‘new energy’ with downtown street party

Kim Raff | The Salt Lake Tribune) A Human Topiary makes her way through the crowd in City Creek in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 23, 2012.
By Cathy McKitrick, The Salt Lake Tribune
A two-block section of Salt Lake City’s Main Street was closed to vehicle traffic Friday evening — the first of many times to come, perhaps — to accommodate a casual street party.
"It’s a chance to help celebrate the opening of City Creek Center and this great new energy downtown," said Art Raymond, spokesman for Mayor Ralph Becker’s office.
http://www.sltrib.com/csp/cms/sites/dt.common.streams.StreamServer.cls?STREAMOID=zW1RB9CjIhoMEsXYItfyo8$daE2N3K4ZzOUsqbU5sYsPEZbqFxPXREuHIZy6ptUzWCsjLu883Ygn4B49Lvm9bPe2QeMKQdVeZmXF$9l$4uCZ8QDXhaHEp3rvzXRJFdy0KqPHLoMevcTLo3h8xh70Y6N_U_CryOsw6FTOdKL_jpQ-&CONTENTTYPE=image/jpeg
Kim Raff, The Salt Lake Tribune
"It’s something we‘ve been wanting to incorporate on a more frequent basis to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment," Raymond said Friday. "We’ll try it tonight and will work it in with other big downtown events in the future to make it a more frequent occurrence."
Car traffic was banned from 4 to 10 p.m. on Main Street between South Temple and 200 South.
Businesses were encouraged to set up sidewalk sales, and area bands and "buskers," or street performers, were on hand to entertain passersby.
http://www.sltrib.com/csp/cms/sites/dt.common.streams.StreamServer.cls?STREAMOID=392Pjgztu8PRsPVmaLImyM$daE2N3K4ZzOUsqbU5sYuPDOWE9SAlz6XMCGlzxRDcWCsjLu883Ygn4B49Lvm9bPe2QeMKQdVeZmXF$9l$4uCZ8QDXhaHEp3rvzXRJFdy0KqPHLoMevcTLo3h8xh70Y6N_U_CryOsw6FTOdKL_jpQ-&CONTENTTYPE=image/jpeg
Kim Raff, The Salt Lake Tribune
Jason Mathis, executive director for Downtown Alliance, said the unadvertised event was designed to be super-casual, "to see what the street might feel like if it were a pedestrian thoroughfare.
"We said we’d bring the party," Mathis said.
Utah Transit Authority TRAX trains continued to run as usual through the area, and the traffic signals cycled in normal fashion.
UTA’s Gerry Carpenter said extra transit police and personnel were on hand, along with additional Salt Lake City police officers.
Carpenter said the trains don’t go fast in that area because they are approaching platforms, but security personnel were on heightened alert. People also were encouraged not to loiter or stand in the railroad right-of-way, he said.

Kim Raff, The Salt Lake Tribune
Cities such as Portland, Ore., with its people-friendly streetcar system, have grown accustomed to mixing foot traffic with transit, Raymond noted.
"We’re dipping our toes in the water. Any regular user of Main Street knows it’s not a very car-friendly street and not a good way to get from point A to point B," Raymond said. "It’s definitely worth exploring as a possible pedestrian-specific thoroughfare in the future."

McEntee: City Creek Center dazzles
By Peg McEntee - Tribune Columnist
Displayed on simple stands, the diamonds at Tiffany & Co. blaze with blue light. Across the way, handsome watches at Rolex by O.C. Tanner beckon the strolling observer.
And there isn’t a price tag visible in either store.
The LDS Church’s $2 billion City Creek Center is open for business, and on a Friday morning, it teemed with shoppers and their kids and more courtesy staff than you can imagine.
I ventured there not just to take a look, but to test whether I — who practically gets hives when I have to go to a mall — could bear it.
Turns out that, like the open-air Gateway, it wasn’t so bad.
Its best feature is the little City Creek channel, wandering through street level and carefully planted with grasses and shrubs that fit its scale.
And as much as Rocky Anderson protested, the skywalk is OK. I watched as fashionable young women posed against the glass so their friends could take their pictures, while others gazed down at the TRAX cars running on Main Street.
A solo flutist played prettily. Down a ways, a young man beat a rhythm on his drum; little farther, a guy played the saxophone. Oddly enough, the conflicting sounds coalesced nicely for a moment, then faded as I walked on.
On a cloudy day, the retractable roofs were tucked away to let in the sweet spring air. People sat at outdoor tables, staring at their laptops or smart phones as children darted around. Sweepers kept the pavers tidy, and maintenance guys were on hand to polish the handrails.
In the Swarovski store, crystals challenged the diamonds across the way. Porsche Design featured impossibly small women’s jackets made of leather as fine and soft as silk. I didn’t bother checking the price.
Gradually, the very fancy stores give way to more middle-brow affairs and then into the outlets you’ll find at any mall, anywhere.
Much has been made of the City Creek Center’s very existence in a downtown that’s seen better days. It’s expected to boost Salt Lake City’s budget with sales taxes and offer condos and office space to thousands of residents and workers. It’s also a buffer for the LDS Church’s ever-growing campus to the north.
Some have called the mall a catalyst of downtown energy, saying its existence will help create a critical mass of commerce all around.
We’ll see. In time, as all malls do, City Creek will lose a little of its opening-day luster and allure. We’ll become familiar with, no longer dazzled by, its attractions.
No matter where you live, there’s always the next best thing ever, and Salt Lake City is no exception.
Still, I may have to put that elegant little Rolex — no diamonds necessary — on my next birthday list.

Have to agree with the post above. Congratulations. What an incredible development for your city. It's one of the coolest things in America now. We're trying to do something like this in Austin, with the Waller Creek project. Something tells me we're going to see more of this around the nation and the world. I hope this influences more urban development in urban SLC. I'd like to your city become like a posh, highly urbanized, mountain metropolis. Big buildings everywhere. Intense density. Vibrant culture. DO IT, SLC! Go for it! Think big. Build big. It's a snowball effect. One project can turn into twenty. Just look at Austin. 10 years ago, what were we? Now, we have something like 10 high-rises in the works, some of which are starting this year. Y'all can do the same. This project could be the spark that lights the fuse of an explosion of development.

...As she gazed around the massive City Creek Center on Wednesday evening, Amy Torman couldn’t help but summon lyrics from a Billy Joel song.
"It makes me feel like an uptown girl," said the Layton resident. "It’s so classy."...
...Those who attended the event, were impressed with the mall’s architectural features including a retractable skylight roof, a skybridge over Main Street, two 18-foot waterfalls, a meandering creek and lively fountains...
...One-third of the mall’s tenant lineup is new to Utah or new to the Salt Lake City market, including jewelers Tiffany & Co. and Swarovski, luxury sportswear chain Michael Kors and high-end handbag purveyor Coach.
Plus, although Fashion Place in Murray has a Nordstrom, the one at City Creek will have a much different and distinctive merchandise mix, including two Gucci boutiques...

City Creek true downtown experience, residents say

SALT LAKE CITY — Recent Lake Tahoe transplant Kate Barker, 24, moved
to Utah to work for a software service firm. Having grown up in rural
Kansas, she wanted to experience what living in a true downtown was
really like.
She said residing at City Creek Landing Apartments in the central
business district offers Main Street city living, a few blocks from her
place of work.
"There are lots of shops and restaurants nearby, so I can walk
everywhere — which is huge," she said. " This city is just booming
right now and I wanted to be in the epicenter of that."...
...Among those households will be a mix of empty nesters, young
urban professionals and families — all looking to be among the first
to reside in Salt Lake's newest urban community.
For Davis County native Kolten Jensen, 26, urban life seemed to be a
nice fit for his young family. He had lived all over the state, but found
his way downtown in January after landing a job as the head fitness
trainer at The Gym at City Creek.
He and his wife Kathleen, 24, were a bit reluctant at first, but have
now embraced their new urban environs.
"(Living downtown) is so much better just because we can walk
everywhere," Kolten said. "In Utah, this is the place where there is
stuff to do."
The Jensens said having recreation, entertainment and shopping all
within walking distance or a short train ride was an optimal choice for
them, the parents of 2-year-old daughter Khloe.
"My only concern about living in the city is that she doesn't have
a backyard," Kathleen Jensen said. "But there are parks everywhere
and we love being outside, so it's not that big of a deal."
From their living room window at City Creek Landing, the Jensens
have a scenic western view of downtown and of the City Creek
Center retractable roof — which add to their feeling of urban living.
"The biggest (factor) for us was this place was right in the middle
of City Creek," he said.
"We had looked at other places in the area, but we made the mistake
of seeing these brand new City Creek apartments first," he said with
a chuckle. Once they saw the new places and realized the convenience
of the location, they were sold.
In fact, they initially figured on staying downtown for about a year
before looking for a house, but have since reconsidered.
"We might stay a couple more years because it's so convenient and
we save a lot of money because we don't have to drive," he said.
There is a little more culture to the restaurants and dining downtown.
Things seem to be getting more exciting in the downtown area.
In the future, the couple said they might consider purchasing a condo
nearby to continue their urban lifestyle.
City Creek will house a total of approximately 800 households over
several large properties. Located on South Temple, Promontory houses
185 units in its 30 stories — representing the largest residential
structure at the City Creek project.
In 2010, the first City Creek residents moved into Richards Court — two
10-story buildings located on South Temple. Also included is The Regent
at City Creek, a 20-story residential tower located on 100 South
between State Street and Main Street.
While not a City Creek resident, Johnny Vigil, 27, recently moved to
the downtown area to enjoy the faster paced lifestyle that is now
available with the new development that is underway. Having grown
up living in Sugarhouse, he wanted to branch out and try a new way
of life.
"There is a little more culture to the restaurants and dining downtown,"
he said. "Things seem to be getting more exciting in the downtown
area."
He said the "energy" in downtown is greater than it's ever been, making
it an ideal time to experience urban living before settling down.
"Before that happens, it's fun to be out and about to enjoy … (what's)
going on in downtown," he said.
Vigil noted that the infusion of new residents brought in by business
firms relocating or expanding to Utah has helped enhance the
"feel" and "buzz" of downtown.
"The majority of them (are) from New York and other places around
the world, and they're bringing a whole new urban style to downtown
Salt Lake," he said.

Story...
"City Creek, unlike the malls it replaces, will have stores whose shopfronts face Main Street, says Jeff Barnard, owner of clothing boutiques JMR and Lolabella. He’s a veteran of the mall scene, having had stores in the Cottonwood Mall, which was torn down, and Trolley, which he left for Crossroads, only to then move to Gateway. Now he has two stores in Gateway, where rents average $40 per square foot. “Sometimes I think City Creek will crush Gateway, sometimes not,” he says. Either way, the key for a retailer, is to be “real careful you sign a lease with mobility so you don’t get trapped in a shopping center in decline.”
Barnard was in negotiations with City Creek for years. Taubman offered a leasing deal of $82 per square foot, which would incrementally rise to $125 over 10 years. Barnard didn’t necessarily balk at how expensive it was. “The way I look at it, you’re paying for more volume.” Nevertheless, he couldn’t afford it, and came up with an ingenious way of being part of City Creek and the seeming Main Street revolution without paying the exorbitant rent.
On Aug. 1, he will open a 5,500-square-foot store in the Crandall building, on the corner of Main and 100 South, called Chalk Garden Co-op, the title a nod to 1959, when his parents opened the Chalk Garden clothing store."

I attended the North Temple Development Conference this morning. It was
informative, and was more for developers and officials to get together and network, and to tell residents/business
owners that the TRAX construction will be done soon--hang on.
In the back of the room, there were some conceptual drawings for the Fairpark.

Thousands of Salt Lake City Conference visitors flock to new City Creek Center
By Hunter Schwarz, Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — Thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world poured into Salt Lake City this weekend for the LDS Church's general conference.
And many of those visitors got their first look at the just-opened City Creek Center while they were downtown...
...Rebecca Patterson, a greeter, handed out mall directories on South Temple. She was chatting with a family when she noticed a large crowd building across the street, waiting for the traffic signal to cross.
"I better get going," she said. "I can see them coming!"...It was a wall of people — and Patterson couldn't hand out the directories fast enough...
The City Creek Center has another busy day in Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Thousands attending LDS general conference descended on Salt Lake City. Many went for lunch and to get a look at the multi-use development for the first time. (Laura Seitz, Deseret News)

...In the crowded food court, Mariesa Davis, who moved from Utah 15 year ago to Las Vegas, said City Creek Center is a welcome addition to downtown Salt Lake City.
"We used to live here a long time ago, and we wouldn't come downtown because it was too much of a hassle," she said.
Davis, comparing City Creek Center with the high-end malls found in Las Vegas, called the new mall "different" and said it had a "more comfortable vibe." Her husband, John Davis, agreed.
"This beats anything in Las Vegas," he said. "This is the best downtown revitalization project I've ever seen."
The crowds spilled out onto the streets, too. A line formed at a taco cart on the corner of South Temple and Main Street.
Brenda Valadez, from Puebla, Mexico, was attending general conference for the first time, and called the new destination "amazing." Her father, Roberto Valadez, said he liked the environment downtown.
"One of the paramount objectives was to try to instill a sense of economic confidence in investors (interested) in Salt Lake City, and that others would come forward (to) invest in jobs and homes in the downtown area," ...

since i've been out of town and otherwise unavailable, yesterday was my first day that i was able to go spend some time down at city creek center. Even after seeing all of the pictures, after knowing the layout inside and out, it was still overwhelming. And, on a tuesday afternoon, completely packed with people. It was kind of disorienting. But in a wonderful way. It was great to see everything first hand that i've seen in all of your pictures, and adding the human element to all of it. It really is huge. Overwhelmingly so.
We also went down main street a ways, and we saw a movie over at the gateway, and um, i bought a build-a-bear of kermit the frog dressed as a jedi. Because i had to.
Anyway, it was a great way to spend a day, and city creek was as amazing as i'd expected. Though some things, like the disney store, were underwhelming. I expected more out of that one.
I'll be back.

The Heart of Downtown - Restoration Hardware @ City Creek
Someone asked to see pictures of City Creek's Restoration Hardware a while ago. I found some good pictures on a blog:
http://utah-weddingphotographer.com/blog/restoration-hardware-store-opening-at-city-creek-center/
Restoration Hardware has two concepts - a normal store concept and one called a "Gallery." The first Restoration Hardware Gallery opened last year in Beverly Hills on Beverly Drive and replaced two of their locations including the previous Beverly Hills location and also the former Santa Monica location on the Third Street Promenade. The new City Creek location is a Gallery like its Beverly Hills counterpart, and is one of only a handful in the country. Thus the marked difference from its Trolley Square predecessor.

The Kimball Art Center envisions a major transformation

The Park Record
Five of the nation's top architectural firms recently accepted a challenge to re-imagine the Kimball Art Center. The results are on display now in the Kimball's Badami Gallery.
As part of an ambitious design competition, the five were chosen from a field of 12 firms that submitted proposals for an approximately $6 million addition onto the center's existing space at the intersection of Main Street and Heber Avenue.
But the Kimball Art Center board wants more than an addition. In their words, they are looking for a "transformation."...

Art-Center Recipe: Take Log Cabin, Skew, Inflate
By Kelly Crow
http://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/RV-AF921_ICONS__G_20120210000540.jpg
Bjarke Ingels's plans for overhauling the Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah, involve an 80-foot tower, seen in a rendering.
Park City, the Utah mountain town best known for catering to skiers and the Sundance Film Festival, now wants to attract art lovers by housing its local art center in a towering, half-twisted log cabin.
The Kimball Art Center, a 35-year-old art nonprofit now in a former garage, has hired the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels to design its new home, according to its board. The $10 million-plus expansion project, which incorporates the garage, will create larger galleries for the Kimball's art exhibits, a sunken theater for dance performances and a sculpture park located atop a grassy roof terrace.
The Kimball has no permanent collection, but its show of Ansel Adams's early landscape photographs attracted large crowds a couple of years ago, as did an exhibit of works by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol lent by major local collectors.
The design by Mr. Ingels, a protégé of the famed Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, will be hard to miss: He plans to build an 80-foot-tall tower by stacking former railway planks at a slight spiral so that the entire structure will appear to change directions midway up, like a game of Jenga gone askew. Inside, a restaurant will sit on the building's lobby floor while a cantilevered, wooden staircase will lead visitors to the various white-cube gallery floors above.
Mr. Ingels has a reputation for creating eco-friendly spaces with playful design touches. In 2008, he designed a condominium called "The Mountain" in Copenhagen whose facade of perforated metal features an enormous black-and-white photograph of Mount Everest. In New York, Mr. Ingels has designed a West 57th Street apartment building, still under construction, that will contain its own 25,000-square-foot private park.
“The designer found inspiration in a storage depot that's part of Park City's history.”
Mr. Ingels said that he found inspiration for the new Kimball space in Park City's history. In 1901, local silver miners built an 80-foot-tall wooden storage depot in the town center called the Silver King Coalition Mine Building; it was the town's tallest landmark until a fire burned it down three decades ago. Mr. Ingel's Kimball expansion will sit three blocks away from the site of that depot and will echo its height and wooden materials.
Robin Marrouche, the Kimball's executive director, said that longtime residents still mourn the loss of the Coalition building in their skyline, so Mr. Ingel's thoughtful nod won them over. "He's captured the spirit of the Coalition building, and our history, without repeating it," Ms. Marrouche said. Construction, pending city approval, is expected to begin next spring.
Meantime, Mr. Ingels said that he plans to visit the site often: "I also really love to ski."

Eastern Metro - Park City's Kimball Art Center

Archdaily.com
In approaching the design for the new Kimball Art Center, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) found great inspiration in the urban development of Park City, the Kimball site, and the city’s mining heritage. They feel the form of the new Kimball Art Center emerges where these rich stories overlap. More images and architects’ description after the break.
BIG was particularly moved when a long-time resident of Park City spoke nostalgically about the former Coalition Building, which once stood just south of the Kimball site. It stood 80 feet tall for 80 years as an iconic landmark for Park City and a monument to the mining heritage, until a fire tragically brought it down in 1982. They wanted to recreate some of its attributes in the new Kimball Art Center – not only the proportions and materiality but the history it represented.
Historically, timber was the primary construction material of the first miner settlers in Park City. Inside the mines, heavy timbers were stacked into retaining walls. The same technology inverted was applied outside the mines as primary structure for most residential construction. They conceived the new Kimball Art Center as an evolution of this construction technique basically a highly-evolved log cabin at an unprecedented scale.
BIG found the most interesting challenge to be where the Kimball is situated in the urban context. At the intersection of the most socially active street "Main St “ and a diagonal street that has become the gateway to the city "Heber Ave“ the new Kimball needed to address both orientations. They solved this by essentially giving each street a gallery. The building footprint sits in relation to Main St and the city grid, then as it rises it turns to greet visitors entering the city via Heber Ave, creating an iconic yet contextual building at the city's doorstep.

An international architecture competition has been underway this season, with a batch of top-flight firms vying to design a new home for the Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah. Brooks + Skarpa and Sparano + Mooney were just two of the large-scale practices jockeying for the commission; now, with all the submissions in, and after extensive review by the Kimball jury, Copenhagen-based firm BIG has carried the day, with the near-ubiquitous office of Danish phenom Bjarke Ingels getting the nod for the new complex in collaboration with local practice Architectural Nexus.
http://static.dezeen.com/uploads/2012/02/dezeen_Kimball-Art-Center-by-BIG-3.jpg
“It was hard for the jury to choose between the five excellent finalists,” said one member of the panel, Maurice Cox. ”BIG won the competition by proposing an iconic building that honors the spirit of Park City’s past and looks ahead into the 21st century.”
http://designwire.interiordesign.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Restaurant.jpg
Balancing contextual sensitivity with contemporary flair, the BIG proposal will be shooting for LEED Platinum rating for energy efficiency. The centerpiece of the design, a helictical staircase that spans the entire height of the building, prompts its strikingly iconic, twisting facade, rendered in striated building components that make it look like a skewed pile of Lincoln logs. The jury’s high opinion was shared by a fair segment of the Kimball-going public, whose opinion was solicited through an online poll.

- The new five-storey-high wing of the Kimball Art Centre will provide exhibition galleries both at basement level and upstairs, connected to each another and to a restaurant between by a winding staircase.
- A rooftop terrace will overlook the existing building, which the architects intend to convert into an educational centre.
- Visitors will enter both buildings though a double-height reception lobby where openings will provide peeping views to the galleries below.
- The project is due to start on site next year, for completion in 2015.

Existing Kimball Art Center
In addition to the jury vote, visitors to the Kimball Art Center—including those who recently attended the two-week Sundance Film Festival in January—were invited to look at models and designs of the five proposed buildings, and weigh in on their favorites via an online poll at http://www.kimballartcenter.org/transformation-project, where links to the Facebook and Twitter discussion pages are accessible. Comments could also be sent to feedback@kimballartcenter.org, or tweeted with hashtag #kimballtransformationproject. These comments were shared with the jury.
Don Stastny, Competition Advisor, comments, “The Kimball Art Center and Park City have begun a great journey together, one that has engaged both the local community and its many visitors through a thoughtful process that was transparent and interactive. The New Kimball will invite exploration, reward discovery, and deliver inspiration.”
Details of BIG’s Design:
The building footprint and lower gallery face Main Street and the city grid, and as the building rises, it turns to greet visitors entering the city via Heber Ave. It will be an iconic yet contextual building at the city’s doorstep. Referencing Park City’s mining heritage, the façade of the building is constructed of massive stacked timber elements.
The twisting façade encloses a continuous spiral staircase that leads visitors from the ground floor to the roof terrace. In between two galleries is a restaurant, which spills out onto a sculpture garden on the rooftop of the existing, historic Kimball Art Center building. That building is converted into an educational hub. At its heart is a flexible, double-height auditorium. The roof of the existing building is equipped with solar thermal panels concealed by indigenous plants. An outdoor sculpture garden loops around the perimeter of the roof.
The new Kimball Art Center takes advantage of Park City’s climate, with an objective to meet a LEED platinum rating by harnessing sources of natural heat, using natural daylight, maximizing ventilation, and recycling rainwater. Generous skylights and large ribbon windows flood the building with diffused natural light, greatly reducing energy costs for lighting.
Operable skylights trigger natural stack ventilation. A ground-coupled heat exchanger is drilled deep into the ground in non-built areas. The heat pumps either extract heat from the circulating water (heating mode) in the winter, or reject heat (cooling mode) in the summer.

It's definitely very different. At first, many were a bit taken back. Most seem to be supportive though, and feel it will be a very interesting piece of architecture to add to Salt Lake's portfolio. I feel as if the renderings kind of leave us guessing, especially with the finish materials, but I'm hopeful that it will emerge as an iconic building.

...The new West Jordan Library (the new "flagship" for the Salt Lake County Library System) is just about complete, and will be opening on June 2nd. Part of the civic complex that's growing by the West Jordan City Hall and Courts, adjacent to TRAX and the city park; I think it's becoming a great area for some potential development.
Some construction pictures here: http://co.slcolibrary.org/libraries/wjoPictures.cfm
...although they haven't been updated since December. Another interesting building--less of the fake columns/pitched roof than the other buildings in the complex.

10 fastest growing U.S. cities - #4 Provo, Southern Metro
http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2012/real_estate/1204/gallery.US-Cities/index.html
Despite the housing bust and the recession, these 10 U.S. cities still managed to record population gains of 30% or more in the decade ending in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. The national average was less than 10% during that time.
http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/galleries/2012/real_estate/1204/gallery.US-Cities/images/provo-ut.jpg
Population: 516,564 (2010 census)
Growth (2000-2010): 59%
With its pro-business policies, including low corporate taxes, and two big universities, Brigham Young and Utah Valley, Provo has become a hotbed for entrepreneurs, according to Jaren Pope, an economics professor at BYU.
The local universities also provide employers with a steady stream of willing and capable workers, according to Pope. "These are the descendants of Mormon pioneers," he said. "They have a strong work ethic and are highly motivated employees."
The area enjoyed a healthy employment rate over the past decade, even during the recession. In January, the unemployment rate in Provo was just 5.9%, far below the national rate of 8.3%.
Provo has also become a destination for retirees and others seeking a low-crime community with easy access to nature. Pope said over 90% of the state's population lives in the valleys along the Wasatch Front, the chain of towns along the base of the Wasatch Mountains.
Much of the rest of the land in the area is barely developed and Provo residents can be on the ski slopes of Sundance in less than half an hour.

By Steve Fidel, Deseret News
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765572300/Nu-Skin-expansion-in-Provo-reaches-halfway-point.html
PROVO — Nu Skin marked the halfway point Monday for the construction of its $90 million Innovation Center in
downtown Provo.
The international direct-marketing company placed the final, 45,000-pound steel beam in place with the presence of
company founder Blake Roney and president and CEO Truman Hunt.
Cranes bringing the seven-story project out of the ground are the most visible reminder on the Provo skyline of a
larger downtown renovation, which includes the soon-to-be opened Utah Valley Convention Center across the street
to the north, and the Provo City Center Temple project by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Like the temple project, which is to join two city blocks by closing a stretch of 100 South between University Avenue
and 100 West, the Nu Skin Innovation Center also involves a street closure on 100 West between Center Street and
100 South.
The existing tower and new Innovation Center will have a combined 300,000 square feet.
So far, Innovation Center construction has included 8,000 cubic yards of concrete in the foundation and approximately
1,100 tons of steel, according to the company. The building is expected to be complete in the summer of 2013 and will
house a research and development laboratory, retail space and a cafe.

University of Utah to build new law school, revitalize campus’ western gateway
University » Facility to be home to “model for legal education,” revitalize campus gateway.
By Brian Maffly | The Salt Lake Tribune
The University of Utah’s southwest corner is a major campus entryway, where thousands enter and exit the school every day by foot, rail, car and bicycle. But little effort has gone into designing an inviting public space here.
Until now.
The University of Utah is moving forward with a plan to build a new $60.5 million home for its law school. Officials have done extensive programming for the project, but they still need to raise the money and design the 155,000-square-foot building. An architect will be chosen in the coming months. The school’s three existing structures lining University Avenue will be razed, and a campus gateway will be developed at the corner with South Campus Drive. Groundbreaking is slated for May 2013, and the building should be ready for students by 2014-15 school year.
A $60.5 million proposal to build a new home for the S.J. Quinney College of Law includes a plaza, outdoor cafe and an architecturally striking building that would create a real gateway across the street from Rice-Eccles Stadium. And a basketball court may appear on asphalt currently reserved for cars.
A campus gateway would be a side benefit to the project’s true objective, which is to create a building capable of supporting the U.’s legal-education programs, according to law dean Hiram Chodosh. And it would be funded entirely with non-state money, most of which has been pledged.
"We are building a teaching hospital for law," Chodosh said. "We are building clinical and practical training into our program, as well as the ethos of service in each and every student."

"The last big push will be this spring and summer," said Jim Webb, project manager for the Utah Transit Authority, noting the project is 80 percent complete. "We will probably be substantially complete in the fall of this year."
That will be followed by an estimated six months of system testing with trains on the track. The line is expected to open for passengers sometime in early 2013 —which is actually years ahead of the original projected completion date of 2015...
...Officials also see it as the start of a bright future, believing that the new line can help the surrounding North Temple corridor to become perhaps a national model for redevelopment...
...In March, the city and UTA held a conference to tell area businesses and residents how they hope the new line will turn the North Temple area into a forerunner of what they hope to see throughout the Wasatch Front during the next 30 years. They are eyeing transit projects to handle an expected 67 percent growth in population.
They hope a third of the regional population will cluster in new high-density town centers built around transit stations, including along North Temple. Many buildings would have businesses on the first floor, offices on the second and residences above that. They city has changed zoning ordinances to allow that...

PROVO — Utah County ranked No. 4 in the nation for the percentage of new jobs created over a 12-month
period.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday that from September 2010 to September 2011, employment
increased in 271 of the 322 largest U.S. counties, including 4.5 percent in Utah's second largest county. Salt Lake
County — which saw a 2.8 percent increase — ranked No. 48, while no other Utah county ranked among the top
200.
Topping the list was Williamson County, Tenn., posting the largest increase with a gain of 5.4 percent over the
year, compared with national job growth of 1.6 percent. The report stated that within Williamson, the largest
employment increase occurred in professional and business services, which gained 1,743 jobs over the year or
9.0 percent.
Conversely, Frederick County, Md., experienced the largest over-the-year decrease in employment among the largest
counties in the U.S. with a loss of 2.6 percent.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A century ago Utah Lake was
a destination spot dotted with leisure resorts, a jewel surrounded
by mountains. But a series of unsavory events decade after decade
turned the lake into something to stay away from...
...But now, after decades of pushing people away, Utah Lake just might
be staging a comeback:
• Work is under way to rid the lake of 40 million pounds of troublesome carp.
• Unwanted plant life is being cleared away, making way for new shoreline access.
• The steel mill by the lake and its smokestacks are gone, with Geneva now
a memory.
• Perhaps most importantly, efforts under way are designed to turn the
lake from its murky brown water to blue again, necessary to overcome
the lake's negative reputation.
With a community like Saratoga Springs pushing for a lakefront lifestyle,
it just may be that Utah Lake’s time has finally arrived...

Great set of pics Anthony...also loved the set you did of the recently completed City Creek Center. I hope we'll be seeing a lot more from you this Summer. There's so many different districts and beauty shots around Salt Lake now.
It never ceases to amaze me how clean the downtown sidewalks, curbs and gutters are in Salt Lake. I also admire the many creative touches that so many of the planners have been adding to Salt Lake's street engagement over the years. It is making Salt Lake one of the more attractive CBD's in the country.
Could you also post this set in the city photos thread N-Z? Here's the link...

Adobe's building really is cool, they are going to have all kinds of amenities for their workers. It will have an indoor basketball court in the giant cube out front, a fitness center, a nice cafeteria, outdoor
tennis and basketball courts, and I think an in house massage place too!

Delts, thank you for continuing to update this thread. I am very impressed with the amount of quality construction in Salt Lake City in recent years.
Ctobsl, very nice set of photos. I noticed a few tall parking garages in the middle of the city... I suggest you go to the top and get some pics from those!
