Welcome to the great Chicago boom rundown Map-A-Rama to which I guarantee you'll be drooling over for months while the permafrost of winter slows the flurry of construction down long enough for me to compile a comprehensive list of the latest and greatest construction overview shy of Steely Dan's big-bad-boom thread (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?threadid=18467). . . for all you geezers out there that remember this staple of the SSP forum diet, I've added some tunes for desert!!! I should do this every year. . . enjoy

Special thanks goes out to Marshall, Skyscraper Dan, Steely Dan, Victor, Shawn and all of the other Chicago cats that made it possible for me to take a two year vacation from the rigors inherent in keeping up with construction stats here in this great city of Chicago. . .

Outstanding work as usual.

This is at least the 4th of these you've done for us... the first I had seen was spring 2000 and IIRC had building images.

Definitely the precursor to the almighty boom thread, glad to hear of an annual update.

You rule, Tom. Thanks.

You can also add the 30+ story State/Lake Hotel, the site is currently being demo'd.

Chicago is going crazy. New York has a lot going up now too, but Chicago has the 2 "thousand-footers" and that makes a big difference.

I must say, Tom--this is a really great idea. It must have taken a long time to put this all together, but it sure was worth it. Putting all the development into perspective like that is so INCREDIBLY awesome

Feel free to send me updates and I'll try to keep these "fresh" on a quarterly basis. . . they're already out-dated since 215 W. WASHINGTON was announced today. . .

It took me about 8 hours working sporadically between Thursday night and Sunday evening. . .

You can also add the measely 12 story CTA center to the SE corner of Jefferson and Lake in the West loop map. Not very significant, but it does contribute alot to the sudden urban canyon at that intersection which used to just be an open sea of surface lots just 3 years ago.

Tom,
Excellent work. That's a great way to keep track of all the projects we have in Chicago.
As I said before, next time I see you I'll get you a beer (or two) :-)

Tom you've done an amazingly thorough job here. It's hard not to be blown away, especially by the River North or South Loop maps, and I could hardly believe you took the trouble to include all the outer neighborhoods as well.

Any chance that the maps will be updated in the next few months?

That would be awesome considering how many changes there have been since last year. Maybe Tom should look into using pins with Google Map so that there is not that much work every time there's an update.

Since Tom says he is so busy, I'll try to whip up a Google Map tomorrow that will allow you guys to put the push pins on the map for each development site. I'll just make it open so any of you can add to it.

^That would be cool. . . my maps were the pre-curser to all the new mapping technologies that came out in the last few years. . . perhaps we can make it interactive. . . it would be nice to finally combine all the data from Emporis, STR's 3D models, Google maps and Steely Dan's page into a single format that we could apply to other cities. . . this week is pretty light for me so maybe we can all meet at the Billy Goat and hammer it out. . .

I might be able to meet at Billy Goat this week...

In the meantime, I created a pretty crude Google Maps page where people can insert the buildings and their info.

http://www.brianbauer.org/maps/Builder.html

I inserted a few buildings to test out the database I created. Right now it's only a page meant for inserting data. I did design the database to allow the "browsing" page to show buildings based on pretty much any attribute, such as year, height, number of floors, etc. That browsing page would come at a later time (when I had some time).

The "insertion" page is open for all to add to it, so I expect that at some point in the future it will be abused. Therefore the next order of business is to require an account. We should decide how to give those out.

Oh yeah, I have no idea how this works on IE; it should do just fine. I'm a Mac guy, so I only have Safari and Firefox (and it's good on those browsers).

We already are in the beginning stages of developing an interactive map on NewcitySkyline and I was actually thinking of emailing Tom to get some feedback. If you guys decide to meet at Billy Goat, please let me know.

^Absolutely. . . everyone has great input and it would be great to consolodate the efforts of everyone. . . there's so many people involved here in Chicago that we can't afford not to capitalize on that energy. . .

How does Wednesday or Thursday sound???
