Great update Josh. A couple of questions:
-is Genco really under construction? Did not know that.

-what about the rumours that Southland Office Tower and Castello may have started?

Also, caught a very brief glimpse of some renderings of what appeared to be a ~4-tower complex along the riverfront (perhaps it was the Greyhound site?) Anyways, the buildings looked to vary in height from about 10 floors to 30 or so.

Genco - I haven't actually been by the site since I came home, but I heard it is fenced off now, and pretty much ready to go. Maybe someone could confirm this. I don't know much about the Southland towers. Castello definitely looks like it is under construction - this would be consistent with Homberg-Centron, who started Churchill Estates on spec as well.

That four tower complex you speak of is almost certainly the greyhound project. I hear they will peobably launch as soon as Eau Claire Market announces their redevelopment plans, which will also include a couple of towers.

^ The city has a policy of keeping a 30 year supply of land for future development, and is currently in a new round of annexations. There are no barriers to outward growth.

EDIT: IIRC, this is the first round of annexations since the Calgary Regional Planning Commission was dismantled in 1995.

Calgary is definitely developing one of the nicest skylines, not only in Canada, but in North America. There is some really nice density, proportionality and balance.
Some of the new projects I'm seeing also look really nice and innovative.

Calgary's economy necessitates the abundance of twins. Many of the buildings were built in boom times, but the financiers of such projects were weary of the markets volatility. They would build in phases, as to protect their investment and avoid financial ruin due to the inherant instability of a resource based economy.
Or so I have heard.

Glad to be of service.
Would Calgary's Skyline seem so dense, and enormous if even half these twins were slightly larger single towers? I doubt it personally. I think the abundance of twins in the current skyline have created a nice dense base for what the skyline will become. With the construction of a few tall towers seemingly imminent (Encana, Imp Oil, etc), they won't suffer the Dubai effect, whereas beautiful structures seem to have been placed in the middle of nowhere.

That's agreeable, regarding Calgary, people tend to use "boom/bust" rather loosely. Where it seems Calgary's "bust" is just another day at the shop for most cities. I think Calgary's economy has been consistant enough to maintain tower construction throughout the years surpassing most Canadian centres. Perhaps "boom/bust" should be redefined for Calgary.

The Penny Lane Office Tower proposal seems to have been revived. A lot of mixed feelings on this one, as it will replace a fairly attractive brick facade along 8th avenue downtown. The height of both buildings has been increased from the original design seen in these two renderings. The taller of the two will likely be about 212 metres.

The sky's the limit
Duelling towers planned for downtown Calgary

By MICHAEL PLATT, CALGARY SUN

A second office tower super-project is being planned for Calgary's downtown, with a revamped plan for Penny Lane development now exceeding 2-million sq. ft.

Developers of the site, where Penny Lane Mall and Cowboys nightclub now sit, increased the scale of a previously planned $250-million twin-tower project to match that of EnCana Corp.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier said it's more proof of the growing demand for workspace. "There is definitely a need for new office space in downtown Calgary, so I'm not surprised," he said.

The Penny Lane project consists of two towers, increased by 10 floors each to 49 and 40, and is expected to be clad in glass resembling alpine glaciers and jagged green granite.

The 8 Ave. and 5 St. S.W. structures will feature an indoor park complete with waterfall.

The height increase will place the taller of the two towers fourth on the list of Calgary's highest buildings, assuming rumours of the EnCana Tower reaching 60 storeys are true.

Calgary Downtown Association spokesman Richard White said the development just adds to Calgary's blistering pace of development.

"Calgary has more office tower construction than the rest of Canada's downtowns put together," he said.

I agree with you, it's just so unique (I could be wrong I haven't seen every building in the world). I think that Penny Lane would be one of the best projects to have to fill the gap between the East and West Downtown clusters.

Here's some pictures that I took of construction projects in Calgary when I was there over the Xmas holidays.

Vantage Pointe. It's massive and slablike, but the materials are actually quite decent. Along with Tarjan Pointe I'm actually rather impressed

Vantage Pointe and Stella. Stella was a project I really had heard nothing about till I saw it in person

Chocolate. I LOVE this project. It's effing hot.

Neat stuff!

I really like that Penny Lane design. It reminds me of Charlotte Plaza (in . . . Charlotte, duh) except that it's better. :D

It has Arriva though!

The Pennylane looks kinda skinny from this view. None the less an interesting going up the steps type of impression the two towers bring.

Should the associated buildings in 'The Bridges - Phase II" be added to the projects list?

The Penny Lane rendering is in the first post of this thread right above Bankers Court and below Palliser Square.

As for Encana, no rendering has been released yet. That is just a idea of what it might look like from IntotheWest.

Yes, the twin sisters. Northwest end of the beltline just south of the tracks IIRC.

Well I just wanted to post up as I am new to the forums. The information here is fantastic, keeps me a bit too distracted from work ;)

I am also an owner of a unit in Chocolate, 9th floor north facing. Looking at moving in mid to late May so I can hardly wait. Colours is a sweet project too but I think the unit sizes in Chocolate are a bit better and hell for the price I paid back in Oct 2004 I really cant complain at all:banana:

I luv seeing all this action to one of the world's best skylines. I do have a question though - is there a height limit? I ask b/c theres seems to be a great deal of demand so why don't they build up instead of building twins? I wish Philly had as much demand.
