View Full Version : What's your favourite city in Europe?

Although I live in Munich, something boring something exciting, I 'd prefer Monte Carlo, Lisbon and Venice, because they are in coast. Interior cities are not that exciting ones. In Germany the better ones are Kiel, Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt. Barcelona is also an almost good one.

Cities I do not like much: Stuttgart, Paris, Brussels

Indifferent ones: Madrid, London

Really saying I prefer Miami, Forth Lauderdale, Fortaleza and something in that direction as European ones.

Physical_Aspect: Other than its skyscrapers, how is Frankfurt forward looking? I'd consider cities like London, Madrid, Barcelona, Moscow and in Germany, Munich or Berlin, as the cities which are reinventing themselves - purely in building terms.

Istanbul, Athens, Rome, Florence.

Not one of those I love for anything having to do with skyscrapers though.

Paris
London
Florence, Rome

Europe is loaded with fantastic small and medium sized cities, and villages, as we all know. Something special in each, too, which makes tourism there unbeatable.

I put Paris first, w/ a bit of a long heart as I love London so, but every time I vist Paris I am taken aback at beauty on such a scale. I always think, "Damn...good job France!"

Paris is the jewel of Europe.

I wouldn't be so sure if Poland is "the fastest growing economy in Europe" (I recon this title goes to either Latvia or Estonia with a GDP growth of 10-12% last year) but Warsaw's got a nice skyline nonetheless

1. Paris (not just in Europe - on Earth)

These are the only ones I've been to, but after visiting Europe for the first time last summer I'm anxious to get to some more soon. European cities are simply stunning.

I didn't visit all Europe (i visited so little actually), still:

By living standads (fun, crowds, things to do):

Constantinople: this is simply the best in the world.

In Italy I'd say Rome is the funnier.
London and UK was a huge disappointment (after midnight nobody is around).

Honorable mention:
Sevilla

By beauty (geographical setting):

1- Constantinople: again, it's unique, 2 continents, 2 seas, 2 water bodies, and the hills and forest and islands.

Honorable mentions:
Venice: well, it's just in the water.
Rome: seven hills, lots of panoramic view
Naples: Vesuvio in the background, sea in the front
San Gimignano: amazing, at the top of an hill in the tuscanian country.
Assisi: top of an higher hill:D

By beauty (historical arts and buildings):

1- Constantinople (again:D ): well, if you love byzantine art (like I do), it's simply overwhelming. Ottoman, ancient, modern and even italian arts are standouts.

Honorable mentions:
Florence: my hometown! Art at pure state.
Venice: unique (a mix of byzantine and italian art)
Rome: if you love roman art as well as baroque art, is the place to go.
Granada: Alhambra, a dream.

Erm... where in London did you go, exactly?

Erm... where in London did you go, exactly?

it was downtown, maybe east side? i think close to chinatown and some market (my memory is fading). we used to walk to the hostel in the western part but very few people we were meeting after 10 p.m... however my favourite memory is Marylebone neighborough (correct name?) at night, so beautiful and mysterious, and the park in front of it. I also went to Portobello road (or whatever it's called), but the market was over and it was very scary actually (not nice people around).
another good memory: in one of those desert nights, we entered randomly a place and there was a jazz concert in a pub with rather adult to old people... and one of them started talking about how much better is to have the pubs and places closed early instead of having them running all night long like in southern Europe.

it was just the fact that we didn't really know where to go actually... but it's still different from Italy or Turkey (and Montreal :D ) where the party is also (often mainly) in the street.

Europe is full of amazing cities. It's hard to decide on just one.

Here are my favorites:

London
Paris
Zurich
Geneva
Lisbon
Marseille
Monte Carlo
Florence
Rome
Venice
Madrid
Barcelona

I'm probably missing some, but those are the cities that I like the most. IMO, London along with New York City are the only two cities that can take on the title of "Greatest City on Earth."

Major Cities/Tourist Places I've been to: London, Paris, Brussels, Bruge, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Luzern, Geneva, and Milan....

Keep in mind I only travel during the winter because it's the cheapest - I hope to change that when I make a little more cash :)

Overall Favourites:

1) London
3) Cologne
4) Munich

Most Beautiful:

1) Bruge!
2) Amsterdam
3) Luzern

Most Disappointing (Reality v. Expectations)

1) PARIS!
2) Milan

Least Favourite:

1) Brussels

I still desperately need to visit the south of Italy and Spain, as I'm sure I'd absolutely love the cities there!

First I should give an overview where I have been, because I haven't yet seen some major european cities like Paris or Madrid.

Out of those: Hamburg (my hometown), Berlin, Hanover, Kiel, Bremen, Enschede, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Prague, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Venice, Padova, Palermo, Istanbul, Valencia, Barcelona

I would put those cities into my top 3 (in order):

1. Ljubljana
2. Hamburg/ Barcelona
3. Valencia/ Prague/ Berlin

1. Paris--all of Europe in one city...never had a bad time there, and the food is amazing.
2. Budapest--simply beautiful and attractive, nice people. I definately knew I was on vacation there, it seemed exotic yet familiar.
3. Antwerp--underrated, wonderful city on the Schelde. Again, great people and atmosphere. Have many good memories of times there.

Europe has so many wonderful cities that it was hard to make a choice. Really like Italian cities as well--bella Italia! Guess your own experience in that city will determine if it remains your favorite. No matter how lovely a city is, if you had a lousy time, that's what you'll remember.

From a foreign perspective, I have to dice it up into two categories:

1) Top 3 Cities I like to visit in Europe
2) Top 3 Cities as per my taste that I would like to live in, in Europe

From the livability column:
1) London
2) Heidelberg
3) Lucerne

I have voted with my feet by moving to Prague, so in my view it is both worth visiting and living there. If I should add European cities I'd recommend people to visit I'd add Istanbul and Venice, and then Rome and Amsterdam, in North America it might be San Francisco and New York, with Toronto in the running. I haven't been to so many Asian cities but Hong Kong and maybe Osaka. I've been to even fewer African cities, but Marrakesh would be among them.

Touristy cities most of these, but they are touristy for a reason.

i live in london so maybe in abit biased but i seriosuly think that i live in the greatest city in the world and i dont think i would ever live anywhere else.

ive lived in paris which i have to say is beautiful. the city centres amazing but the suburbs that i went to were awful. i think london has more depth in every aspect once to peer under the sometimes ugly facade :)

in terms of the rest of europe only ever been to barcelona on a weekend break but it is also pretty snazzy- the architecture especially. would love to spend more time there.

i also did a exchange to leipzig, which is a cool and buzzing place.

It really depends on how old you are, what your taste is, what mood your are in etc. There are many great places to visit out there and they all have their own captivating qualities. I don't like large cities because they are anti-social and a pain in the a** to visit. There is not one thing that makes a place memorable. I am SICK and tired of hearing about Paris this - London that. It's always the same places. I hate London becuase I live here. I'm put off by Paris because it loves itself too much.

TOP 3...
Beatifull:
Rome
Berlin
Saint Petersburg

TOP 3 I would live in:
Munchen
Stokkolm
Stutgard

Paris : too much similar to Rome, Rome is better
London : I'don't like It simply
Madrid : Not bad, but I don't like life inside
Amsterdam : too much turism refered its dimension, too much caotic and "erasmus party..."
Bruxelles : Boring...
Athens : fantastic for History, but modern town is none impressive
Lisbon : I don't know!
Wien : too small for me, but is very beautifull, not at top 3 anyway.
Praha : something beatifull but too much social problems

This is my opinion!!!

I'm put off by Paris because it loves itself too much.Sorry dude but you couldn't be more wrong. As a matter of fact, Parisians hate their city, they hate their lives, they hate to spend each second of their lives in crowds in the shops or in the metro, disturbed by noisy neighbours, disturbed by neighbours who want them to be less noisy, tired to dodge cars and smell their pollution, depressed by the lack of trees, sick to live in tiny spaces, always in alert for their own security.

The crowds living in Paris share only one dream : to get out as soon as they can. I know this very well because I'm considered as abnormal by my friends. I love the crowds, I love the density, I love the energy, and that's why I love Paris... but all my friends want to move out.

I think that this image about Paris loving itself used to be true during a good century, but isn't true anymore. Paris population was of 6 million in 1950, and of 10 million in 2000. The city didn't manage well its growth. Housing, Transportation, Economic development have all been neglected, probably because the city centre of Paris hasn't physically evolved much, giving the illusion everything could stay the same. Yes, Paris used to love itself, but it doesn't any longer.

Anyway, I still find your comment ironic considering you're a Londoner, and we just have to check how London media tells their city to see how much it loves itself. Ridiculous big titles such as "Is London the best city in the world ?", "Are we the capital of the universe ?" or similar crap. On the other side, when Paris makes the international news, it's because of its riots.

OK, I will be honest.

Big European megacities like Paris, London, Berlin and all cities in Europe which have more than for example 800 000 habitants, for living in my opinion are bad.

With same kind of the money, I will always prefere to live in some smaller European cities, perhaps in South Germany, Suisse, South France or Italy, than in London, Paris or Berlin. Quality of the life there us much better than in those concrete jungles, full of the people.

Also weather is important reason to choose or not plaice for living. So I will with same kind of the money allways choose Southern than any Northern European city.

Also how much of the time those who lives in megacities use time of theirs lifes just on transport, not to mention that big cities are heaven for all kind of the crimes, full of the ghetos and etc, no mater did we talk about London, Paris or Berlin.

So no thanx for London, Paris or Berlin.

In fact most people don't live in big cities, the world is not already urban majority.

Luxembourg; if I forget the rain, the clouds, the fog and its size.
Nice night life, bars and street environment for its size.
Lobe the enormous canyon that surrounds the city, the Spanish castles and underground tunnels… and of course the beer.

I have been to many countries in Europe:

-England, Scotland, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Russia. My favorite country from these is Spain, and my favorite city is, hands down, BARCELONA.

Runners up in more or less descending order: Berlin, Paris, Edinburgh, Prague, Rome, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Moscow, Seville, Cologne, Amsterdam, Venice (which i don't consider a real city).
