I know. Assholism. The cut to commercials, and the subsequent increase in volume, has awoken my kids.
Effective marketing communication follows the AIDA model (remember GlenGarry Glenross?). The VOLUME may get your Attention. But does the content stimulate your Interest, make you Desire the product, and then take Action (purchase)?
Rogers, face it. You suck. Ditto Bell and Telus. We buy from y'alls 'cause we've got no choice. So take your Beavers and fish/lemurs, and cram it up yer asses.
Oh, and fvck you, Tim Whoretons. Not trying to sound like MikeToronto, but I miss the choice of coffee/snack places in Montreal. Here in SW Ontario, it is just Tim horton's, everywhere. Lineups, lineups, lineups. Popularity, or a lack of choice?

Why are shitty Rogers commercials twice as loud as everything else?
God. So annoying.
The worst is those ads Rogers inserts into CNN, Spike and those channels. I have it on in a normal volume and all of a sudden that Jack FM ad comes on..."ALL ABOOOOOARD!" at the sound of a jet engine.
(Why the hell Rogers is even advertising Toronto radio stations in New Brunswick is beyond me.)

Platinum Blonde bassist MacLean found dead
Canadian rock icon Kenny MacLean -- best known for his stint as bassist with the multi-platinum-selling '80s new-wave band Platinum Blonde -- was found dead Monday in his Toronto apartment.
Local police were releasing few details last night, but early reports suggested Mr. MacLean succumbed to a drug overdose and was found in the early afternoon by his sister. The musician apparently died sometime over the weekend after a performance Friday at the Mod Club, a popular concert venue and night club in the city founded by his former band mate, Platinum Blonde singer Mark Holmes.
Mr. MacLean was at the club to celebrate the release of his third solo album, titled Completely. The songwriter and performer, who has been a key figure in the Canadian music scene for more than two decades, lived on Toronto's busy Yonge Street, where he ran a music academy and studio out of his home.
Police were continuing to investigate his death Monday night.

The Frame is on Channel 165 in SD and 225 in HD on Shaw. Its been on Calgary's lineup since the summer. Some nice shots for sure, especially in HD, but there are better ways to use valuable channel space.
Salt and Light television is a few years old now. According to Wiki, it was created in 2003. Shaw is just picking it up now.
They also have a near little infobox with religious channels in Canada. Let's take a look!
Based in Alberta:
1. CKCS Crossroads TV Calgary
2. CKES Crossroads TV Edmonton
3. CFSO (BYU Television (Mormon)) Cardston
4. CJIL (Miracle Channel) Lethbridge
Based in BC:
1. CHNU Joy TV Fraser Valley
2. CFEG (Mennonite run) Abbotsford
Based in Manitoba:
1. CIIT Joy TV Winnipeg
Based in Ontario:
1. CITS Crossroads Burlington
2. ATN Aastha TV (Hindu) Newmarket (Cable only)
3. Salt and Light (Catholic) Toronto (Cable only)
4. The Christian Channel Toronto (Cable only)
5. Vision TV Toronto (Cable only)
Look at how non-religious Alberta is! And wow, every Canadian province has a Mormon TV station! (References to arguments from other threads or other forums you probably won't get posted for my own self satisfaction. Ignore.)

Media tycoon and Jays owner Ted Rogers dies
Last Updated: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 | 9:36 AM ET
CBC Sports
Canadian media magnate Ted Rogers, head of Rogers Communications and owner of the Toronto Blue Jays, has died at 75.
Rogers, founder and CEO of Rogers, was surrounded by loved ones when he passed away early Tuesday at his Toronto home, the company's board of directors said in a statement. He had recently been admitted to hospital for an existing cardiac condition.
"We wish to express our deepest sympathy to Loretta and all of the Rogers family for this loss," said Alan Horn, chairman of Rogers Communications and acting CEO.
"Ted Rogers was one of a kind who built this company from one FM radio station into Canada's largest wireless, cable and media company — a leader also in giving to the community through his and Loretta's many philanthropic initiatives. He will be sadly missed."
Rogers Communications purchased 80 per cent of the Blue Jays on Sept. 1, 2000, paying Belgian beer-maker Interbrew $160 million. Three years later, Rogers took full control of the team by spending only $25 million to buy the former SkyDome from Sportsco International, a Chicago-based group of investors.
The price tag was only a fraction of the nearly $600 million the stadium cost when it opened in 1989.
With former Toronto Blue Jays general manager Pat Gillick on board, Sportsco paid $80 million to take the baseball stadium out of bankruptcy court in April 1999.
The building was renamed the Rogers Centre, giving the cable and media tycoon added revenue sources from parking and concessions.
In October 2006, Rogers and Larry Tanenbaum, minority owner of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, informed a media gathering of their interest in bringing an NFL franchise to Toronto.
The Rogers-Tanenbaum alliance offered Toronto a legitimate ownership group should the NFL decide to come north of the border.
While little progress has been made to house a full-time NFL team in Toronto, Rogers struck a deal with Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson in February to bring eight games, including five regular-season contests, to Toronto over the next five years.
The Bills, who already played the Pittsburgh Steelers in a pre-season game in the summer in Toronto, will host the Miami Dolphins in the first-ever regular-season matchup in Canada at the Rogers Centre on Sunday afternoon.
After this season, the Bills will play one regular-season game in Toronto each year from 2009 to 2012, and take part in two more pre-season games in 2010 and 2012.

Rogers granted 24-hour news channel
December 10, 2008
http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/480010
Rogers Media announced that the Canadian Radio-Television Commission has approved their application for an all news channel.
The digital (category 2) licence granted was for a local 24-hour news channel to serve the city of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, including Burlington.
"We are extremely pleased with the CRTC decision today," says Jamie Haggarty, executive Vice President, Operations, Rogers Media Television. "Torontonians and residents of the GTA will now be able to enjoy greater diversity when it comes to local news, weather and sports. Citytv's unique brand of news and information, complimented by our ethnically diverse OMNI stations is the perfect combination to deliver a full-time channel committed to the local perspective."
The channel will also include news items contributed from a number of Rogers owned media properties including The Fan 590, 680News, Sportsnet, Publishing and the Toronto Blue Jays. Rogers Media Television will be unveiling launch date and branding plans for the new channel at a later date.

Although Tim Hortons remains extremely dominant, with 18 locations alone on the campus of the University of Western Ontario, Williams Coffee Pub and Starbucks have both made some inroads here. The Little Red Roaster, a locally owned chain, also is making inroads in some neighbourhoods and especially downtown. Another local chain which shall remain nameless has tried to expand, but has been dogged by service so poor I've heard of people with gift certificates to this place trying to give them away. The remaining locations are found at University Hospital (Compass Group), King's University College (Aramark), and in the residence buildings (not sure who operates those). The London Free Press has announced it is dumping its Sunday edition effective December 28. The LFP has been publishing a Sunday edition since April 1998, before which time many Londoners subscribed to the Toronto Star on Sundays.
It's no big loss for London, because we haven't had a real Sunday paper for a long time. In the last couple of years it was mostly just a repackaged version of the Toronto Sun full of generic entertainment, travel and sports content you could get anywhere. There was a bit of local news but nothing you couldn't get from 'A' News on Saturday or Sunday night. The Sunday Star has always been a much better paper and I look forward to reading that on Sundays again.
The LFP has become mostly irrelevant, and I am reading it less and less. They've wiped out most of the good locally-based columnists and replaced them with generic national columnists I don't care to read. If I want national news I turn to the Globe & Mail or the CBC website. If they want to remain relevant in an industry facing increased competition from the Internet, they need to be a local paper with local writers. And they need a real Sunday edition, not a small version of the Toronto Sun with a different cover and no Sunshine Girl.

CTV cancels Canadian Idol for 2009
Rob Salem
Television Critic
Canadian Idol, once a competition-crushing ratings juggernaut for CTV, will not be produced in 2009, the network confirmed tonight.
Citing a less-than-idyllic "economic climate," CTV said Canadian Idol will be taking a "rest" for the broadcast year.
But CTV still retains its Idol licence, and says it has every expectation of bringing the crooner competition back again the following season.
Times must indeed be tough for the network to suspend production on the second most-watched Canadian-originated show in the entire country - right behind CTV's other adopted franchise, So You Think You Can Dance Canada.
But even with impressive ratings that ranged between 1 and 1.5 million in the final weeks of its sixth season in September, that is still roughly half the Canadian audience for its sister sing-a-thon, American Idol.
The American show, also cutting costs this year by cancelling its annual American Idol Gives Back fund-raiser, returns for its own eighth season January 13.

Now all we need is for him to come down with some sort of intestinal disease and for that Simon jackass from the US version to be involved in some sort of mess and we won't have to deal with this shit anymore! Then we can get on to the other 50 shit TV shows!

The American show, also cutting costs this year by cancelling its annual American Idol Gives Back fund-raiser, returns for its own eighth season January 13.
aww my parents will be crushed :haha:
they are the only people i know who watch that show
so CTV may think they are getting millions of viewers and the contestants think wow i am going to sell like crazy - only problem is its all senior citizens watching the show who wouldn't buy an album ever :haha:

Only 1-1.5 million Canadians watch Canadian Idol? Hell, Quebec's most watched TV show, Tout le monde en parle (a talk show) attracts around 2 million viewers ever week!
Also I'm not the least bit surprised that more Canadians watch the US version than their own version. Typical.

what about all those MILLIONS of votes the contestants get every week? oh yeah, it's the core 50,000 freaks who watch and vote over and over for their favourite... ctv just likes to make it sound like there were millions of people watching.
finally, BM can concentrate more on his exclusive e-talk interviews with some canadian caterer who baked a cake on the set of some hollywood blockbuster.

lmao at the comments on Yahoo news (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/ad/capress-081216-entertainment-tv_canadian_idol) about this...
This is the very very best news I have heard in months- first - it is such a crooked show - playing upon the dreams of young people - and second - Ben Mulroney is a nothing - I hope the show never comes back - and I wish CTV would fold - get rid of the dinasours Robertson and Rinaldo - their salaries alone would pay for the scum bags on Idol
Finally Thank the Lord we will not miss Mulroonee extended chin and his shellac hair one iota. Get that guy off the tube and make room for some talent. That might help us watch more canadian content. I agree that we have the talent in the country why copy from our neighbour to the south. Again thank you for kicking buttface off the air.

Anyone notice how certain commerials get edited during their run....example- the old spice (I think) commecial with that half horse half man in the shower, what happened to the chick at the end of the commercial? or another example the twit who gets turned into a drumstick cone and asks the chicks to be "easy on the nuts" god only knows what the idiots who wrote that masterpiece were thinking

Yeah, I've noticed that. I remember some butter or margarine commercial that got pulled a while back that featured a potato impaling itself onto a fork because it could not live without the product in question.. someone complained to the CRTC saying it glorified suicide.
I've noticed the French versions of commericials played in Canada seem to get away with a lot more "shocking" material.

That and 12-year-old teeny-boppers with unlimited cellphone minutes who vote 50,000 times a night and who think the Jonas Brothers are musical geniuses.
It used to be one of my gulity pleasures, but it got more lame as time went on....the good singers always seemed to get the boot early. I stopped caring each year as soon as the best-looking girl was gone.
You should see the sales figures for some of the winners....Idol isn't exactly a road to stardom.

i always wondered this...
CTV bought out CHUM and at the initial sale CITY TV but later on Rogers bought CITY TV as CTV had to sell them
so Rogers and CTV are sharing the Chum/City building on queen street in toronto?
how does that work?
cause CITY TV still does its city line TV show from that building and chum/CTV does some of its shows from the same building...
was it split up into two? or they just get along nicely and share the space?

I decided to read around the Canadian Idol forums to take pleasure in those losers disappointment and see how long I could read before having an aneurysm.
It didn't take long:
After doing a ton of research on the "economic crisis", I learned that it started in the US. Now how come a crisis in the US would possibly heavily affect Canada? If there was an economic crisis in Italy, Australia, or even Iceland, would the world be affected? Of course not! Not only that, but maybe CTV can explain why Australian Idol will be returning and not Canadian Idol. Remember that Australia has a lower population than Canada does. According to this web site (http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2008/11/looking-for-the-magic-touch.html), it says, "Returning to TEN (an Australian television channel) in 2009 for its eighth season, Australian Idol is a proven performer at engaging and entertaining the nation."
With all of this evidence, it shows that CTV just wants to pull off some excuse to shatter the dreams of young hopefuls like us. At this rate, I can might as go and move to Australia.
