i always wondered this...
CTV bought out CHUM and at the initial sale CITY TV but later on Rogers bought CITY TV as CTV had to sell them
so Rogers and CTV are sharing the Chum/City building on queen street in toronto?
how does that work?
cause CITY TV still does its city line TV show from that building and chum/CTV does some of its shows from the same building...
was it split up into two? or they just get along nicely and share the space?
Rogers has a deal with CTV to stay in the CHUM building until Rogers finishes the renovation of another building at Dundas Square.

I'm quite disappointed in the lack of local news available today, New Years Day. Around here only Global has their usual 6 PM newscast, and while Citytv had a half hour newscast at 6, they have a live special on Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion right now from 6:30-7:00. Nothing on CBC, CFPL, or CHCH, and CKCO has a condensed newscast. It never used to be this bad. The least 'A' could've done is do something from Ottawa for all their stations. On the bright side out west BCTV has all its regular newscasts on the schedule.
If local TV is going to remain relevant in this country, it needs to be there every day, in some form, even if it is condensed.
SteelTown
Jan 2, 2009, 1:54 AM
It's getting really bad for CanWest. Global is losing the morning show and instead CHCH Morning Live from Hamilton will be transmitted to Toronto instead. All editorial services for CanWest newspaper will be centralized in Hamilton, so Vancouver Sun newspaper design will be done at Hamilton. All cameras will be operated in Toronto, controlled by a remote.
Local content is shrinking and being replaced more provincial content now.
TBTV has a 30 minute local news on weekday holidays, but on the weekend they only have regional news (which also airs on CJBN in Kenora). Been like that for years.

That's not so bad. I know a lot of people in Thunder Bay are not fans of Dougall Media, but at least they are more responsive to local needs, considering the small size of the market. It is sad that a market that small has a station with local news on weekday holidays, and the only station in much larger markets like Hamilton and London have nothing. Thunder Bay is lucky to have locally-owned media.
Yeah it's a weird situation. On one hand, they have pretty much blocked any form of competition aside from the Chronicle Journal and a local news blog, on the other, we probably have the best local news coverage of any city in Ontario besides Toronto.
TBayTel is the same way, as soon as competition comes up their first goal is to figure out how to buy it or, failing that, run it out of business. They tried to take over Dryden Telephone last winter and almost ruined the Common Voice Initiative. They don't have a monopoly anymore but Shaw is so messed up it isn't really competition to them.

Even in this supposedly "free" society people are scared. 10 minutes ago I made a thread in the skybar about how I received a guest earlier today who's from Poland and also happens to be black, and not an immigrant but born and bread Polish. And I wanted to share an interesting conversation I had with him about Race in Poland and out of the three replies I received before the mods deleted it (not locked or moved it but DELETED it) two were vulgar comments on how rude the whole thing was. And I never got a reason from any mods.
People aren't willing to speak freely, even if there's nothing wrong with what they're saying.

Canada's second Virgin Radio station set to launch in Vancouver today
Friday, 09 January 2009
The short-lived 95 Crave, which replaced Z95.3FM in mid-2007, is being replaced by Canada's second Virgin Radio station January 8.
Virgin Radio 953 will feature some 95 Crave radio shows and introduce new weekend shows, including a Saturday night dance segment and American Top 40 and U.K. Hit 40 shows on Sunday.
The new format, launched in Toronto in August, will also introduce Ryan Seacrest into the Vancouver market with shows on weekday evenings and on Sunday afternoons.
The move is part of a new partnership between Astral Media and Virgin Radio International. It's one of a string of changes to hit the station in recent years.
Operating as Z95.3 since 1996, the station began as a contemporary hit radio station and was one of the most listened to stations for five years. In 2002, it focused on music from the '90s before switching formats in 2004 and 2005 to try to reverse its declining market share.
Following Astral Media's mid-2007 acquisition of Standard Radio, which owned Z95.3, the station switched to 95 Crave, which targeted 25- to 45-year-old women.

Virgin Radio 1069 unleashes The Gods of Rock on Ottawa
Astral Media launches Canada's third Virgin Radio station
OTTAWA, Jan. 9 /CNW/ - The Gods of Rock descend on Ottawa this afternoon
at 4 pm when Astral Media owned radio station The Bear 106.9 flips to Virgin
Radio 1069. This is Canada's third Virgin Radio station to launch after Virgin
Radio 999 Toronto and Virgin Radio 953 Vancouver; all part of a commercial
association to develop Virgin Radio in Canada entered into by Astral Media and
Richard Branson's Virgin Radio International.
Virgin Radio 1069 will retain its roots in the rock music format while
kicking it up more than a few notches to deliver the true excitement and
energy of rock attitude. "Some people see Ottawa as nothing more than a snowy,
cold, government city. But the truth is, the weather here only makes us
tougher and nothing says party more than a little parliamentary unrest. If any
city can understand the true edge and spirit of rock and roll, it's this one.
What better place for the Gods of Rock to live and thrive," says Eric
Stafford, Vice President and General Manager of Astral Media Radio Ottawa.
Virgin Radio 1069 would like to apologize in advance that its Programming
Department may not be returning phone calls as quickly as usual. Chasing down
rock stars all day can be a full time job. For proof that they're working and
not just smoking in the boys room, tune in to the The Gods of Rock Hour every
weeknight at 6 pm. Icons of rock will play their favourite music and swap
stories the rest of us can only wish we had. On Sunday nights, the always
controversial God of Rock himself, Alice Cooper brings good radio to bad
listeners. Playing hits from across the decades and sharing stories, trivia
and his unique perspective on hot topics, this is an experience not to be
missed.
For those tired of the same old commute, CHEZ in and CHEZ out, Cub
Carson, Kitty and Jay will kick off mornings on Virgin Radio with the Rude
Awakening, promising a lot of laughs, a little shock value, and crank worthy
tunes that will take the edge off your morning road rage. To wake up the
afternoon drive, Virgin has kidnapped one of Canada's best DJs and brought him
to Ottawa. Gonzo and The Roadshow will ignite the airwaves from 2-6 pm daily
to wind down the work day and turn up the party.
Listeners looking for a more interactive radio experience can now face
off on Virgin Radio's new DJ challenge show every weeknight at 9 pm. "We built
Virgin Radio 1069 for die hard Ottawa rock fans so it only seems right that we
give them an opportunity to be more involved in the station. Our new show Hey
Mom - I'm on Virgin! will give listeners the chance to defend their rock cred
against all comers," says Pete Travers, Program Director for Virgin Radio
1069. "You'd be surprised how many people think they are the next Cub Carson,"
points out Travers. "I'm definitely intrigued to hear what these folks bring
to the table...but trust me....one Cub is enough".
Richard Branson built the Virgin brand on a foundation of rock music in
the 1970s with a chain of record stores and a label first known for signing
unique and controversial rock acts. This great rock history that is the
heritage of the Virgin brand will fuel and inspire Virgin Radio 1069 in
Ottawa.

Holy Fock I don't like Virgin Radio. I've turned it on three separate times in the past two days and it's been the Rolling Stones. The last time I turned it on the DJ's were verbally masturbating over Richard Branson. No thanks.

Burger King's struggling everywhere...they've fallen behind Wendy's to the #3 burger chain in the US. Entire franchisees are going broke...the one for Hamilton, Kingston, and a couple other places did a year or so ago and they all closed.
Hopefully they are all replaced with Jack in the Box!
Carl's Jr. is supposed to be opening some stores here in western Canada soon as well.
