^^^ There is a Carl's Jr Opening In Surrey this year :D
there were a bunch of burger kings here in the tri cities and they all closed down about the same time - the same franchisee apparently
one of them was turned into Starbucks and something else - a pizza place - can't remember which chain, the other became an italian coffee house and another one became something else

Holy Fock I don't like Virgin Radio. I've turned it on three separate times in the past two days and it's been the Rolling Stones. The last time I turned it on the DJ's were verbally masturbating over Richard Branson. No thanks.
I turned it on this morning and they were playing 'let it on the line' or whatever that dirge by Triumph.
Mullet rock for mullet heads....that should be their new logo.
I would have thought that Radio Supertramp was the station of choice for this sort of demographic.

Radio in general is sucking more and more, and the change to "Virgin" in Ottawa is just another example of it. And WTF is that name? Is it supposed to be the music virgins listen to? It's such a stupid name. "The Bear" is synonymous with rock.
Every bit as stupid was when Corus neglected "The Hawk" and let it degenerate from a classic rock station to the current generic classic hits station, known as 1039 FM. And I bet they wonder why ratings have plummeted in the past few years.
By the way, what is it with stations now omitting the "point" from the frequency?
SpongeG
Jan 12, 2009, 10:59 PM
Virgin Radio is a branch of the "Virgin" empire - they had stations in the UK but are now called "absolute radio"
there doesn't seem to be any change in formt for "crave" other than the name switch to "Virgin" here in Vancouver
they do use a brit accent for station ID's the exact same ones they used to use on Virgin UK
elsewhere in the world - they have Vrigin Atheletic Clubs (quite a lot in South Africa), Virgin Cola, Virgin Airlines, Virgin Trains, Virgin stores, Virghin Mega Stores etc
By the way, what is it with stations now omitting the "point" from the frequency?
i think thats the way Virgin used to do it in the UK and continued it here

I have always been a believer in keeping a consistent, solid brand people can have long-term loyalty to. London stations have been fairly good at this. FM96 has been FM96 since January 1979, exactly 30 years as of last week - although the format back then was a mix of what we now call classic rock, plus jazz and country, and some edgy new-age rock. They were defiant of the highly conservative CRTC regulations on FM radio in the 80s, and as a result had a pretty nasty license renewal in the late 80s, but have been pure rock ever since then. Likewise, BX93 has had the same branding and country format since its launch in 1980, save for a brief stint as Country 92.7 in the early 90s.
Ottawa radio might not be perfect, but no radio market is worse than Kitchener.

At least four I can think of. The two downtown are both gone, the one near Masonville is gone, and the one on Wharncliffe is gone.
Rock94, the market leader, is about 12 years old now, and CKPR has been CKPR since its inception in the 1950s, it's basically a wide variety of music with lots of news and talk and stuff. All the other stations (except CBC) change a lot. We have one station that has changed at least 5 times in 5 years.

Those CAA commercials are irritating...you know, the ones with some couple going shopping with some fat tow truck driver carrying all of their bags while they leave him behind, laughing. That's exactly how you get treated by surly CAA truck drivers when you get locked out of your car.
They don't say dot or point here. It's "105 3 The Giant" or "91 5 FM". No word between the number. CBC says "88 point 3" sometimes but if the announcer says it themselves they say "88 3". Must be a local thing.
88.3, 94.3, 105.3
101.7, 102.7
91.5, 95.1

Yuck, sounds like Huntsville, Ontario. Your choices are Hot AC on the local More FM, Hot AC on Moose FM from Bracebridge, and CBC Radio One and Radio 2, the latter of which is pretty much Hot AC now too. You know what's sad is that a lot of those artists/bands are actually pretty good....they just turn people off by playing the same 2-3 songs on the radio. I love Skynyrd, but there's a hell of a lot more to them than Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. I was *shocked* when I was in the car the other day and heard 105.3 play a live version of Call Me The Breeze. At least they're trying to branch out.
Classic rock radio has corrupted people....my favourite band is the Black Crowes and I saw them in TO last summer. Their concerts are decidedly not greatest-hits shows. On the way out I heard half the people complaining about how they didn't do Hard to Handle or She Talks to Angels....probably because those were the only ones they've ever heard.

A lot of rock stations have very limited playlists. There was one day I heard the same Linkin Park song on FM96 four times in ten hours. And I wasn't even listening the whole time, so it could've been more. Right now Weezer's "Troublemaker" is in heavy rotation.

That's because radio stations in North America all buy their playlists pretty much from the same places. The playlist ops have prepackaged "classic rock", AOR, AC, CHR formats that pretty much (according to them anyway) guarantee you a minimum X%market share no matter the city you air it in anywhere on the continent.

radio was still more independant back than - stations had to compete to get listeners so listeners had a lot more say in what they played ie requests etc
nowadays stations have the same owners from coast to coast and most have more than 1 station in the same market
nowadays its like one program director makes decisions for all the stations instead of each one doing it on their own
kinda sucks
on a good note 100.5 the peak in vancouver is really good they broadcast online - they are somewhat independant - jim pattison owned instead of rogers or astral etc.

I’ve been trying to remember the name of the family since last night and have finally found it: the Shiller family! With this info, I have since discovered that they have branched out and are behind the quite large Blinds to Go/Marché du Store chain in Quebec, Ontario and down the east coast of the U.S. So some people here undoubtedly have some of their blinds in their homes.
And for those who can read French, you will find that they have also helped to revitalize some depressed commercial streetscapes in Montreal:

The cheesiest is that 'I buy your jewellery' guy from Toronto.. he even had slides at the f'n theaters for chrissakes.

And for those who can read French, you will find that they have also helped to revitalize some depressed commercial streetscapes in Montreal:

yes the shillers. Steven, David, and whatz-his-putz. Good article. I like the vibe of masson street. never knew that the shillers were behind much of the revitalization.

So the premiere of Lost is on tonight, but it won't be on CTV.. instead it's on A channel??
(I know they're the same company.. just wondering why they're doing this?)
I guess people got tired of it. It looks like TBT has dropped it completely. Not sure if they have purchased or apply to purchase rights to A Channel programming, or if the CTV affiliation can get them the programming or what. I guess they can't air it if it isn't on CTV.

I thought CHFD aired some Global stuff too. Or did that all move to CKPR?

Two words: American Idol.
Yes, the Canadian one might be toast, but they're still chugging on south of the border, trying to stay relevant.

Both stations air Global stuff but the bulk of it is on CHFD. It's schedule is primarily Global though. The CRTC cracked down on their behaviour so they have little choice.

I was listening to the radio earlier this week (cjad) and the host was talking about Obama's coronation to a reporter in Washington ,as the conversation went on the host pointed out how the Canadian flag was prominently displayed on all U.S. networks(they were broadcasting next to the Canadian embassy), the reporter agreed and also informed the host that one network phoned the Canadian Embassy and asked them to take down their flags because it was interfering with their view of the street and potentially blocking the view of the holy man as he marched down the street.....needless to say the Canadian embassy told them to screw off.

Wasn't the initial plan to flood the street so Obama could walk on water all the way to the white house? After watching half an hour of that crap on American TV I had to reach for a bottle of pepto bismal.... PS Canadian tv wasn't much better especially that brown nosing twit Kevin(Toronto)Newman

I do beieve that they did want to flood the street. However, my sources tell me that the reason was to wash away the skyhigh shit of the outgoing bush administration.

Oh of course, Leslie "Toronto Roberts" would be fuming for the full News Hour at 6 if Kevin didn't do that. The reality of the Toronto-based provincial and national media is that a minor fender-bender on Kingston Road is a bigger story than a murder in another Ontario city (this really has happened). It's like how ATV covers the Maritimes. As one of our forumers once said, PEI could get bombed and it wouldn't get more than a passing mention half an hour into the ATV evening news.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!
I already got disowned by my mother and my buddy for having implied that King Obama's 'inauguration' was a little perhaps just a little too close to a coronation and got hated on for suggesting the coverage on TV was 'excessive'.

Leslie Roberts that loser used to work in Montreal until he moved to New York where he didn't last an year before moving back to Canada, and he also tries to hide the fact that he's gay(according to the Montreal Mirror) PS I have nothing against gays I'm just quoting what I read in the mirror

Global News is terrible. TBT used to air it so that people here could see what Toronto was up to but people complained so now they just air a recording of CNN. Which is almost worse. The funny thing is, TBT News has a tendency to air things like a fender bender in Toronto during their "local" news segment. Except when they do it's not so much a fender bender as much as it is a 50 car pile up on Highway 400 when there is nothing equally interesting going on up here. Leslie Roberts eyebrows are suspicious. He kind of looks like a less chunky faced version of the guy that owns Abercrombie and Fitch.
On CBC Radio 1 the other night they were talking about how his inauguration was the closest you can get to a coronation in a Republic. It got a lot of laughs for the seven people and myself who listened to it.

I remember Leslie Roberts. He used to be Big on CTV Montreal for a few years. As per usual he fucked off to the big TO when he got big. I remember before he left he had this crappy daily morning program on CTV called "Lemon Fresh", it lasted like a week and then he vanished into the wild....

Anyone watching Jeopardy on CBC?
Final question:
"Out of all the countries ending in -stan, this one borders the most -stans. *list of all -Stan countries that it borders, which is pretty much every one*"
1: Russia? (Lost everything)
3: ? (lost about half)
2: Pakistan? (lost about half)
The answer was Uzbekistan.
Another time they had to name the only two countries that started with A but didn't end with A. Someone put down Australia. One guy got Azerbaijan. No one got Afghanistan. You know, the country with which America is at war? One of the guys on that episode was from Toronto and in typical Canadian fashion he was in the red most of the show and came in third. In the Uzbekistan episode there was a fat woman from the south who knew more about college football than I ever will.

Reminds me of the Canadian edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I think the biggest winer of the show won $64,000...it was a sad state of affairs. At the end, all the contestants waived at the camera and screamed "BYE!! BYE!!!" like a bunch of idiots.
Well, if the Americans every get on Reach for the Top we'll kick their asses. :)
