I think it is pretty normal for your accent to morph when you go back to a place where you used to live and hang out with the people there.
My French accent is totally Québécois and I haven't lived in the Maritimes in decades, but every time I go back there the Acadian accent I had as a child invariably comes back within a day or two.
My French accent also morphs slightly into an accent more typical of that heard in France when I spend time in Europe. Or so people here say when I get back home.

Shaw changes guard as Canwest bid approved
CRTC approves Canwest TV takeover
By Kim Guttormson, Calgary Herald; with files from Reuters October 23, 2010 5:15 AM
Shaw released its fourth quarter results, in which quarterly profit fell 1.6 per cent, missing analyst expectations. And the Canada Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved its $2-billion purchase of Canwest Global's television assets, including Global TV stations and specialty channels such as HGTV and the Food Network.
"Whether it's a coincidence or related to (Jim Shaw's) decision to step down, the company is going through a completely new phase," Dvai Ghose, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, said, adding he doesn't think the succession "really signals any major changes in strategy."
As well as its acquisition of television stations, 2011 will see Shaw accelerate its move into creating a wireless network and face increasing competition from telecom companies, such as Telus, in terms of bringing TV into people's homes.

Mobilicity to arrive in Ottawa next month
Published on October 21st, 2010

Ottawa Business Journal
Mobilicity will connect in Ottawa next month, the company announced Thursday, with the firm saying it will offer more "affordable" mobile plans than what's currently available.
“Ottawa consumers have been paying way too much for wireless for way too long,” said Mobilicity chief operating officer Stewart Lyons, in a statement.
The service launched in Toronto in May and will soon offer its wares in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and the nation's capital.

maybe i won't go with wind when my contract ends with telus next year...
Wind Mobile in the doldrums
The success of Wind Mobile, which is angling to become the country's fourth national wireless carrier, has always been in question. But with its main financial backer merging with another company, its prospects are uncertain.
Chairman Anthony Lacavera sought financing from Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris more than two years ago to get the company started, which officially launched last December. Sawiris, who operates international carrier Orascom Telecom Holding, owns a 65% equity stake in Wind. He's now selling most of his telecom assets to Russian company VimpelCom Ltd., and will retain a 20% stake in the new entity.
The deal is expected to close early next year, and the company has not indicated how Canada factors into its plans. Lacavera, however, is optimistic. "It's a big positive," he says. "The combined entity would have a great deal more financial strength." Sawiris's operations were saddled with more than US$15 billion of debt, and the merger, which creates the world's fifth–largest carrier, relieves some of the strain. It also opens the door to acquiring the other new entrants (Public Mobile and Mobilicity) to gain market share, although Lacavera stresses he has not discussed this possibility yet.
But some analysts are questioning the degree to which VimpelCom will fund its new Canadian asset. In a conference call about the merger, executives indicated they may sell "non–core" assets, such as those the company has limited ability to control. "Canada could fall under this category," wrote Scotia Capital analyst Jeff Fan in a research note. Although VimpelCom would own the majority stake in Wind, Lacavera retains voting control.
VimpelCom doesn't have many options if it wants to sell Wind, however. Federal regulations prevent the incumbent carriers — Rogers, owner of Canadian Business, Bell and Telus — from purchasing the newcomers before 2014. Foreign ownership rules also currently limit a sale. "VimpelCom may wait for foreign ownership [regulations] to be removed (tightening belts in the meantime) and sell the Canadian business," wrote RBC Capital Markets analyst Jonathan Allen in a research note.
VimpelCom is also more conservative than Sawiris, who is a huge risk–taker. (Orascom operates in North Korea, after all.) Competing against the Canadian telecom oligopoly is a challenge in which VimpelCom may not be interested, speculates one analyst who requested anonymity. "It is quite possible that VimpelCom will want to salvage what it can from Wind by either selling it...or by cutting costs by slowing down the network expansion and being more disciplined on marketing costs," he says. Wind added 100,000 subscribers during its first six months, the analyst notes, a rate that makes it difficult to reach its goal of 1.5 million after three years.

BlackBerry PlayBook – is it an iKiller?

VANCOUVER – It has flash, something Apple’s iPad does not, a fast 1Ghz Dual-Core processor, 1GB Ram and full HD 1080p all packed into a 7″ tablet.
Do we finally have our iKiller?
While it’s too early to say how RIM’s new BlackBerry PlayBook will fare, all signs seem to indicate that Apple’s iPad will have some serious hardware to compete with in the upcoming months.
Due to release in Q1 of 2011, the BlackBerry PlayBook will be RIM’s first attempt at making a handheld tablet. Like the iPad and various other Android based Tablet PC’s available on the market already, the PlayBook also features a fully capacitive multi-touch, multi-gesture display.
The tablet however, will not be running the newly touted BlackBerry OS 6, and instead will feature a version of QNX.
For those who remember, QNX was acquired in its entirety, by RIM in April of this year. With full BIS and BES enterprise integration and support, the PlayBook will also allow data tethering with other BlackBerry mobile devices. Aimed to be the first professional-grade tablet, the guts of the device seem to be pretty impressive on paper.
-2 built-in cameras; 5MP back, and 3MP front for video calling
-Full HD 1080p video recording and playback, with HDMI out
-16, 32, or 64GB models to choose from
-5300 mAhr battery
-Built-in Bluetooth
-Built-in Wireless N

Another good reason why those repeater stations should never have been allowed to count as "local" stations by the CRTC.
I wonder how long CHFD will last before it becomes a CIII repeater. CKPR was supposed to lost its CBC affiliation in August but it didn't. We don't know yet if it will be replaced with a new CBC local station or just a repeated of CBLT or CBWT.

I love the idea behind It Gets Better, but wish there were some way to express experiences like mine- because I was never bullied for being a "fag" because I wasn't stereotypically sissy. I WAS harassed a lot for being academically gifted in an environment where academic success was seen by itself as a questionable thing for boys, and the three or four of us who excelled academically were always getting called names, including "fag." I think this campaign should also talk to boys in those circumstances, because is some communities the worst thing a boy can do is not to have sex with other males but to get good grades. and be seen carrying schoolbooks. This is actually a huge issue in underclass African-American communities where kids and school boards can't afford to give the kids two sets of textbooks so they don't have to run the gauntlet of abuse from other kids in the neighbourhood for daring to carry books home.

That station didn't need to explain the Internet, as at that time they had a weekly Internet feature on the news.
My elementary school was a "have not" school, and I remember in 1996 we used to read about how tons of schools across North America were getting online and where all students had Internet access. We wondered if we would ever get this cool "Internet" thing in our school. As it turned out we were one of the very last schools in all of Canada to get Internet access, and it was in 2000 - after I was in high school. In those days around here if you didn't have Internet access at home, you had to book one of the three Internet computers at the public library (named Roo, Tigger, and Pooh), and there was always a waiting list.
My school always got the leftovers other schools didn't want - we still had Commodore 64s in use in every classroom as late as 1994, at which time we were handed down some IBM PS/2 computers from another school that had upgraded. And my high school still used DOS and Windows 3.1 as late as 2001!

i didn't know they still played music videos - when do they play em? anytime i skip past they are showing the OC or gossip girl
CRTC rejects MuchMusic's request to air fewer music videos
TORONTO - The CRTC has rejected MuchMusic's request to air fewer music videos in favour of more "lifestyle" programming, but the station will continue to push for changes that a network executive says are key to staying relevant.
Much had asked the federal regulator for a number of amendments to its licence — including one that would allow the station to reduce the number of videos it plays to 25 per cent of its total content from the current 50 per cent.
But Brad Schwartz, senior vice-president of Toronto's Much MTV Group, says the rejected changes will soon be re-examined anyway, because parent company CTV has requested a group licence renewal for its cluster of specialty networks, which includes Much.
"It's certainly not the end of the process," Schwartz said in a telephone interview from New York.
"We got some nice flexibility to put us on par with other specialty channels, and I'm confident that our case is strong on why we need these changes to keep MuchMusic relevant."
According to CRTC's ruling, MuchMusic's move to lessen its obligation to music videos was opposed by a number of groups, including Rogers, which argued that "it would allow MuchMusic to reorient itself from a music-based service into a lifestyle-type service targeting young adults."
The amendment was also opposed by a number of organizations representing the music industry — including the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) — who argued that MuchMusic would duplicate the programming of MTV Canada, another CTV property.
In its ruling, the CRTC said the proposed amendments to MuchMusic would be "significant enough" to call into question the regulator's Category A licensing framework, which seeks to maintain genre exclusivity.
The CRTC also rejected Much's request to air more lifestyle programming, as well as its bid to reduce Canadian content and eliminate French-language videos from its playlist.
Much's bid to decrease music-related content (from 100 per cent to 75 per cent) was also rejected, as was the network's request to increase animated content.
In addition, the CRTC said MuchMusic cannot reduce the amount of money it pays to MuchFACT, which funds videos by independent Canadian artists.
But Schwartz says that in an age where music videos are available on-demand in an ever-increasing multitude of formats, a television station based solely on music videos isn't viable.
"If you're in the 'South Park' business, you're the only company that is delivering 'South Park' to the audience — it's tough for us to be in the music-video business when you can get it everywhere," Schwartz said.
"What the CRTC does in creating the nature of services and genre protections is to allow businesses to be special. And our problem is, music videos no longer make us special. When you look at a service like Vevo — which is owned by the record labels — we don't even get music video premieres anymore. All music video premieres are on Vevo.
"So we deal with a product that, under our current licences, mandates us to (dedicate) 50 per cent of our day (to) music videos, and those music videos are readily, freely and legally (available) and promoted to be anywhere else."
The CRTC did approve a few of MuchMusic's amendment requests.
Much will now operate on an 18-hour broadcast day, down from a 24-hour period. That means that Much will be free to broadcast whatever it wants between midnight and 6 a.m., without consideration of its licence — allowing, for instance, additional late-night re-runs of "Gossip Girl."
Schwartz said the change could take effect as early as next week.
Much will also now be allowed to expand the number of categories from which it can draw programming, though all of that programming will still have to be music-related. As an example, Schwartz pointed out that Much can now air comedies.
And Much has also been approved to air more movies.
A ruling on CTV's group licence requests is expected by early next summer, a spokesman said.
Schwartz said Much applied for changes early because the network was in a "very desperate situation," urgently needing increased flexibility.

I knew Much still had music videos, but they're always on at obscure hours.
When I worked a previous part-time job three years ago, the younger folks in the break room always watched Much. I used to tease them about how "in my generation they had music videos!"
The lowest point for Much was during the opening of the Vancouver Olympics when they had that hot tub with the under-18 girls.

CRTC cites violation with programming mandate
TORONTO -- MTV Canada has received a slap upside the head from the country's TV watchdog over "Jersey Shore," a Canadian cable ratings juggernaut. Seems the CRTC, which polices the Canadian airwaves, wants to know what The Situation, Snooki, JWoww, Pauly D, Sammi and Hungadunga, not to mention other U.S.-originated MTV shows, have to do with MTV Canada's original programming mandate to operate an all-talk format. "After a review of your broadcast schedule, it would appear that several of your programs are not consistent with your nature of service, such as 'Jersey Shore,' 'Cribs,' 'Downtown Girls' and 'Teen Mom,' " the regulator told MTV Canada-parent CTVglobemedia in an July 27, 2010 letter that requested clarification of the channel's programming strategies. What may also have caught the CRTC's eye is "Jersey Shore" is a ratings phenomenon on Canadian TV, and this summer closed in on "The Hills" as the best-ever performing reality show on cable TV north of the border (HR, Aug. 30).
Representatives at CTVglobemedia offered no comment Friday on the CRTC intervention, and added their response to the regulatory query will be made public before the end of the year.
CTVglobemedia wasn't the only domestic broadcaster to be shown a wagging regulatory finger for straying from their original terms of license. Rogers Broadcasting was also called to task in a July 27 letter for its G4 cable channel apparently departing from its original mandate to air computer and Internet-related programming by featuring episodes of "Mantracker," "Which Way To" and "The Office."
And Canwest Global Communications Corp. received its own July 27 missive from the CRTC why TVTropolis, a cable channel in 2004 designated as a cable channel for "adults over 50 years of age, was airing series like "Project Runway Canada" and "Last 10 Pounds Boot Camp.
"The CRTC also wants to know why the Canwest Global website points to 68% of TVTropolis's viewers falling into the 18-49 demo prized by advertisers.Executives at Rogers and Canwest Global were not available for comment at press time. The CRTC from time to time shows Canadian broadcasters who's their daddy by not allowing them to air popular U.S. shows, or Canadian shows outside their original licensing format, to boost ratings and impress advertisers.
The CRTC in April told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. to stop airing urban-themed dramas and comedies for a cable channel originally licensed as Country Canada for a rural Canadian TV audience.
And the regulator told Alliance Alliance Communications in 2007 to remove "CSI: NY" from its History Television schedule after rejecting the broadcaster's argument that the popular CBS cop drama was a "September 11-themed series.
"Canadian broadcasters usually breach the CRTC's original licensing obligations when they rebrand cable channels, as CTVglobemedia did with MTV Canada, originally licensed as Talk TV Canada, and TVTropolis, transformed by Canwest Global from an original Prime channel. What's more, Canadian cable channels often follow a tortured path from first entering the local market to eventual rebrands to build and sustain audiences in an increasingly fragmented landscape.MTV first ventured into the Canadian market in partnership with then Craig Broadcasting as MTV Canada, only to raise the hackles of rival broadcaster Chum Ltd., which had a programming supply deal with the U.S.-based MTV Networks.

Chad Kroeger almost gets redneck beatdown
Well here is an odd story, but I like it. Chad Kroeger of Nickleback supposedly almost got his butt beat by Blake Shelton at Miranda Lambert’s 27th birthday party a couple of weeks ago. Kroeger was rumored to be trying to get Lambert to do shots and she was being an uptight bitch and wouldn’t do it, so Kroeger called her out on it. Shelton obviously did not like the disrespect and tried to go after Kroeger while people held Shelton back. Lambert held her own by throwing the shot in Kroeger’s face.
Is Miranda Lambert, Adam Lambert?

Is Miranda Lambert, Adam Lambert?
You know something? when I heard the "news" this morning on the alarm radio, I thought the morningman said that Chad was trying something on Adam Lambert...Mr. "what do you want from me?"
It's just that Adam Lambert has disappeared from all the magazines at Superstore's checkout and some woman named Miranda Lambert is on them now, and I have no idea who she is or where she is from. Considering what I know about Adam Lambert (which admittedly is limited to "he was on American Idol" and "I think he might be gay?") a gender change wouldn't surprise me.
Anyway I just wikied it and she is a country singer, unrelated to Adam Lambert, who looks like a lesbian villain from a bad comic book series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Lambert_at_the_2010_SAG_Awards.jpg). Seriously, he totally looks like a lesbian in that photo. If I didn't know better, I would guess it was some freaky chick.

I didn't know we were even getting OWN
Canada to preview Oprah Winfrey's OWN before debut
By Etan Vlessing
TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - Canadians are to get a sneak peak at the OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network ahead of the media maven launching her network in Canada on March 1, 2011.
OWN is to launch stateside on January 1, 2011, two months ahead of the Canadian bow.
So Canadian license-holder Corus Entertainment is to air OWN programing in nested blocks through January and February on the women-targeted W Network and VIVA channels.
That sampling will include "Your OWN Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star," day-and-date with the U.S. airdates for the TV competition series.
The OWN channel will then replace VIVA on March 1 to complete Winfrey's march into Canada.
Other shows to promote OWN before its Canadian launch include "Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes," "The Road to Your Own Show" and "Enough Already! With Peter Walsh."

Christmas music. On the radio. What an affront to my lack of faith!
There is a radio station in Ottawa that has switched to all Christmas music, all the time, 24 hours a day. It's probably a tape on a continuous loop. DJ's get a month off.

Columbia House closes its doors in Canada due to ‘obsolete’ media
The promise of a dozen albums for one dollar, or some other irresistible introductory offer from the Columbia House music and movie club, came to an end in Canada on Thursday.
The entire Toronto staff was terminated after its parent company's Canadian division declared bankruptcy.
Reports about the sudden closure of Direct Brands Media, which was also offering new members a $3 book from the Doubleday Book Club, echoed a now-familiar story of an entertainment retailer unable to justify its continued existence in the digital age.
"People like to get it for free on the internet," company graphic designer Jeff Betts told the Toronto Star. "The media we sell . . . it's obsolete."
While similar laments have been heard repeatedly over the past decade, it's nonetheless rare for a company like this to abruptly cease operations, leading one to wonder how they hung in for so long.
Based on a Toronto Sun story that noted 100 employees have been left without severance just before the holidays, the closure seemed to take most of them by surprise.
Columbia House Record Club has a history dating back to 1955, designed to deliver music through the mail to Americans with limited access to record stores. Business boomed further with the introduction of cassettes and 8-track tapes, and later videocassettes.
The field became even more competitive with the higher profit margins of CDs and DVDs.
Marketing to new members generally consisted of offering an initial flurry of titles, practically for free, with the less-prominent condition that a certain number be purchased at an inflated retail price over the membership period.
Just in case you couldn't decide which album you wanted to buy that month, Columbia House was happy to send their featured selection to you, unless you mailed in a refusal.
These practices came under greater scrutiny by the time people found online forums to complain about them.
BMG Music Service, which eventually absorbed Columbia House in the U.S., cited competition from online disc retailers when it closed in Canada in 2000. Two years ago, after the sale of the company to Direct Brands, the music club was phased out.
The company continues to sell new CDs online to American customers for $6.99 each, with one delivered each month, based on selections placed into a queue.

London's got at least one radio station doing all-Christmas music. Additional stations are airing a mix of Christmas and regular music. It's really annoying.
I try and avoid Christmas music whenever possible, except at church. It's the same tired old songs every year, sometimes with variations.
