I really wish CBC News Network would diversify their advertising. I'm home this week as I start a new job next week, and I like watching that channel - except for the advertising. Advertisers are wasting their money advertising this stuff to me. I do not need a Premier Care bathtub, anti-snoring devices, or a CHIP Mortgage.
Perhaps the channel should be re-named Premier Care Channel, featuring headlines from CBC News.

Recent horrible commercials :
- HI I'M SHELLY ALEXANIAN. why does she sound like she has a clothespin on her nose?
- Tim Horton's summer themed commercials: `You complained about how cold it was all winter, you're not allowed to complain about the heat!' Hahaha shut up, twat.
- In Ottawa , 'Donnelly auto credit's no-credit credit program, because sometimes.. you just need a break'. How many times can you say credit in one sentence? and if you are bankrupt, why are you buying a goddamn new car..take the bus you defaulting deadbeat. Or maybe you want to pay for a car for 8 years at twenty percent interest.

Blockbuster Canada to shut locations
June 18 Deadline; Closings will include 140 stores across country
By JAMESON BERKOW, Postmedia News; Financial Post May 25, 2011 3:25 AM
More than onethird of all Blockbuster Canada Co. locations will be permanently shut as of Father's Day weekend, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
The Canadian division of the fallen film and video game rental chain was placed into receivership earlier this month, more than six months after its U.S. parent filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Grant Thornton Ltd. was appointed receiver, giving the consulting and accounting firm control over the chain's more than 400 locations.
At the time, Grant Thornton said it was seeking court approval to sell the company's assets.
Having been granted approval from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on May 20, the first round of closings was announced Tuesday.
Although the receiver did not specify the exact number of stores on the chopping block and did not return multiple requests for comment, individual store managers told reporters Tuesday the action will include 140 locations across the country.
They gave June 18 as the date when their doors will close.

I have had both Laurentide and Black Label and if I recall they are both very different beer. Also (although this is not necessarily related to taste), they were/are also for very different demographiques: Laurentide was for your Oncle Fernand who wore plastic flip flops and sat in cheap plastic lawn chairs around his above-ground pool and drove a K-Car. CHCH FIRST ON THE AIRWAVES WITH CANADA'S EARLIEST MORNING SHOW
EARLY TO RISE OR LATE TO BED... STAY INFORMED WITH CHCH!
http://www.istockanalyst.com/business/news/5213074/chch-first-on-the-airwaves-with-canada-s-earliest-morning-show
TORONTO, June 7, 2011 /CNW/ - Today Channel Zero announced plans for the launch of CHCH's Morning Live First Edition — the first morning show to hit the airwaves at 4am in Canadian history!
Geared to the earliest of the early risers and perfect for commuter nation, Morning Live First Edition will get viewers up, prepped for the day and out the door on time. It caters not just to suburban commuters and predawn shift workers, but also to grateful insomniacs, first responders, parents of infants and, yes, even the occasional late-night club-hopper. Morning Live First Edition will air weekdays from 4-5:30am ET and is slated to launch early this Fall on CHCH. While new to Canada, "early early" morning shows are now the norm throughout the U.S., airing in markets of all sizes.
This Fall, CHCH continues its tradition in news excellence. Currently airing 76.5 hours of local news every week — the addition of Morning Live First Edition takes the total weekly hours count up to 84 — more than any other local television station in North America. Just another example of how Channel Zero continues to push the envelope in Canadian broadcasting.

CHCH has always been an innovator in Canadian broadcasting and continues to be. They seem to have no problem airing local programming.
Shaw is talking about adding morning shows on some of its Global stations, including in Saskatchewan. Meanwhile CTV can't be bothered to produce any local morning shows except for Breakfast Television in the Maritimes, /A\ Morning in Ottawa, and CP24 Breakfast. They don't even do anything local in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, or Southwestern Ontario in the morning anymore.

CHCH Lands James Cameron's Avatar For Fall 2011
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/chch-lands-james-camerons-avatar-196274
TORONTO – James Cameron grew up in southern Ontario ahead of moving to California and film stardom.
So it’s fitting that CHCH, a TV station that serves southern Ontario, has grabbed Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar for a Canadian free TV debut.
Hamilton, Ontario-based CHCH, which released its Fall 2011 schedule on Wednesday in Toronto, said the Fox Studios package deal will see the Ontario TV station and Metro 14 in Montreal counter-program a number of Hollywood movies during the upcoming primetime TV season.
CHCH will air 16 minutes of Avatar footage, including an alternative opening scene, not seen in the original theatrical release.
Other features to air on CHCH and Metro 14 include the Jeff Bridges-starring Crazy Heart, Max Payne, starring Mark Wahlberg, and the Liam Neeson-starrer Taken.
And new TV series to debut on CHCH this Fall include CW’s Hart of Dixie, which stars Rachel Bilson and Scott Porter, Secret Circle, also from CW, and CBS’ The Insider.

Canadians pay the highest data roaming fees in the world
24.61 US a megabyte, eh?
Shane Bigham Jun 08, 2011 15:17:33 PM
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Despite Canada opening up competition in the cell phone industry, data roaming rates remain among the highest in the world. That's according to a report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
On a per-megabyte basis, Canadians abroad pay 24.61 USD. That is the equivalent of sending ten photos.
The average cost among the more than 30 nations surveyed by the OECD was 9.48 USD. Greek travelers pay the least for data roaming at only 4.17 USD per MB.

it sucks - my friend tried mobilicity which has a great plan and you can add unlimited data for only a few $ more but the service is horrible - calls were always being dropped, so many dead zones, literally you could cross a street and lose service, he was constantly going onto roaming and having to reset his phone so he ditched it last month - he was missing calls for work which is not good
its too bad they were an alternative to the big 3
heres another recent story - i believe someone on the forum can share a story of their charges when they went overseas recently...
$750 cellphone bill means her roaming days are done
Travelling with a smartphone can mean a whopping bill but smart consumers are ditching data charges
Jennifer Tarenta had a relaxing a winter vacation in the Dominican Republic. After she returned, she got a cellphone bill that nearly gave her a heart attack.
“A $750 heart attack, to be exact,” she says. “It was a steep price to pay for not turning off the data roaming feature on my iPhone.
“I never checked my email, browsed the web or did any other activity to merit such a high phone bill.”
After two hours negotiating with Fido, her wireless phone company, she got a 40 per cent discount. But she says that’s not enough.
“I am furious about giving away my hard-earned dollars for something completely intangible. I feel like I’ve been robbed,” says Tarenta, 29, who asked me to help.
Rogers (which owns Fido) often gives a break to first-time offenders. Tarenta paid $100 for an international data roaming package and had the $750 charges reversed.
If you own a smartphone, you may not know you’re dealing with an unregulated industry that can charge outrageously high rates when you travel outside a carrier’s network.
Canada hasn’t followed the European Union in setting price ceilings for voice and data roaming. Nor has it followed the United States in telling mobile carriers that data roaming fees must be “commercially reasonable.”
Wireless companies lock handsets to prevent you from removing the portable memory chip (known as the SIM card) when you travel and replacing it with a low-cost, local SIM card.
Before taking a smartphone on holiday, call your wireless carrier and ask for tips on keeping your costs down.
Turn off your data settings and turn on your Wi-Fi. This lets you connect to the Internet free through wireless networks in “hot spots,” such as cafés, bookstores and university campuses.
Buy a data roaming package if you can’t use Wi-Fi or you want your device to be on all the time.
Finally, call to complain about surprise data roaming charges on your bills when you get home. Ask the carrier to reduce them.
A prepaid data roaming package can be helpful. But you’ll still face big fees if your plan is too small for your needs.
Libby Akey is a grandmother who has a mobile Internet stick for her laptop. She called Rogers to ask about buying a data roaming plan before a six-week trip to Punta Gorda, Fla.
A $30 plan with 10 megabits was enough because her data usage was usually low, a Rogers representative told her. A second call to Rogers confirmed the advice.
Two weeks into her vacation, Akey found her Internet connection cut off. Rogers said she’d racked up overage fees of $500 (at $3 per MB) and agreed to cut them in half if she went onto a $75 plan for the rest of her trip.
Later, she got a bill with $717 more in overage fees. I asked Rogers to help.
“They’ve waived all the data roaming charges. Everything was a total misunderstanding,” she told me. “When someone asks questions again about using a computer in the U.S., I hope they get the right answers.”
Rogers wants to better inform customers about how data roaming works, said spokeswoman Patricia Trott.
“Because of the arrangements we have with our data partners, we are currently unable to notify our customers of their usage in real time when outside of the country. We are working on a new initiative to improve this.”
If carriers can disconnect you when you blow out your limits, why can’t they tell you how much data you’re using before you reach the danger point?
Heather Morgan runs CutMyCosts.com, a company that helps families and small businesses reduce their telecom bills. She says she helped bring down a client’s data roaming charges from $3,998 to just $275.
A young woman who moved to Korea to teach English had planned to get a prepaid phone through a local company once she arrived.
“I used my phone for just four days — to get to Korea, to make calls home and as an alarm. My total usage was just four minutes,” she said in a testimonial at the company’s website.
Her supplier said she’d watched a video on YouTube without turning off the data settings. That’s why her four-minute usage was so high.
Businesses can get hammered even worse than individuals, says Patrick Connolly, president of UTR Global, a Toronto company that helps firms control their wireless, landline and data charges.

This is totally out of the blue, but has anyone ever seen the following Canadian Lifejacket PSA on TV before:
It begins with a father and 2 young children happily canoeing on some secluded lake, in some place like Algonquin Park. You can see that only the kids are wearing lifejackets, and the father is without one. Then I think there is some sort of narrater who says the father thinks nothing will ever happen to him, he should wear a lifejacket...etc. Then it cuts to the father floating away, presumably dead, while the young kids stand on shore watching him!:(
If I remember correctly it had a yellowish tint to it, and probably some eerie music. I saw it on OLN. I'm sort of a fan of creepy PSA's (Concerned Children's Advertisers did some great ones back in the 90's), and I'd love to see this one again, but I've had a hard time finding it.
Anyways, just thought I'd put that out there!
A newer version of that has been airing lately. I think there was a website associated with it, but I can't recall what it is.

Russell Crowe reunites with 'Hood' gang in St. John's (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2011/08/02/nl-russell-crowe-stjohns-robin-hood-802.html)
Australian superstar Russell Crowe says he leapt at the opportunity to play a guest role on CBC's Republic of Doyle, in part so he could trigger a reunion fitting for Robin Hood.
Crowe is shooting an episode of the comic crime drama in St. John's this week, in part as a nod to creator Allan Hawco and on the suggestion of his friend Alan Doyle, the singer of Great Big Sea. . . .
On Tuesday, the pair released an album — The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Vol. 3 — on iTunes. It is also being released this week on other digital platforms. The songs have been recorded over various periods, including while Robin Hood was being shot.

LOL, He seems comfortable in Newfoundland, I don't think that will happen, but it would be forgivable.
The pair’s newest album, “The Crowe/Doyle Songbook, Volume III,” was released on iTunes Tuesday morning and by evening, had hit the No. 9 spot in Canada.

If you watch that Premier bath commercial on CBC Newsworld, they show the old codger unable to exit his car, and his haggard wife helping him up the stairs, but as soon as he gets his walk-in bath, he can walk like a 15 year old. That's the magic of the Premier walk-in bath.

Today on CBC Newsworld I saw that retarded Money Mart commercial with the hot Asian chick beckoning you to go further into debt with her animated piggy bank. "Are you incapable of paying rent? Single parent? Need money fast but don't want to associate with the mafia? come to money mart (offer not available in manitoba - animated pig voice).

I love the signs in those places. "Maximum interest for 100 dollars borrowed: $21.00. Our fee: $20.99".
Wow! What a deal!

Grants to help News Cafe train citizen journalists

The Winnipeg Foundation and a prestigious American journalism foundation have decided to invest more than $400,000 into citizen journalism through the Winnipeg Free Press News Café.
The Community News Commons — a new grassroots reporting hub, open to the public — is the first project of its kind in Canada and the first Canadian project to receive the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
"This is an exciting and unique community building opportunity," Winnipeg Foundation CEO Rick Frost said. "Everyday Winnipeggers will become empowered, inspired and trained as citizen journalists and the entire community will benefit from (more) access to grassroots news."
The three-year project, with matching grants from both foundations, will pay to train and mentor citizen journalists, as well as create multimedia platforms to share their news, photos and information. Several Winnipeg public library branches will take part as technology hubs to the café.
The project will also offer opportunities for Red River College journalism students.

What Ottawa’s new copyright laws will mean for Canadians
...
Here's what the bill will mean for consumers:
The law will legalize everyday consumer practices, such as using a personal video recorder to record a TV show for later viewing or copying music from a purchased CD to an MP3 player. These are not allowed under the current law.
Bill C-32 would make it legal for consumers to make a back-up copy of content to protect against loss or damage.
The law includes a YouTube provision where users can take content and "remix" it for non-commercial purposes.
Libraries will no longer be required to deliver interlibrary loan material in paper form. Electronic desktop delivery of materials such as scholarly or scientific journal articles will be permitted.
The legislation will include provisions that make it possible for copyright enforcers/holders to demand ISP (your address) information from Internet providers, like Rogers or Shaw, when they suspect a customer may be involved with illegal downloading.
Under the law, Canadians will not be allowed to break digital locks, even if it's for personal use. This includes picking a lock on a DVD purchased overseas to watch at home or to transfer a purchased e-book to read on another personal device.
Individuals found violating copyright law could be liable for penalties between $100 and $5,000, which is below the current $20,000 maximum.

How often are copyright laws even enforced in Canada? You never really see the police or anyone arresting someone for ripping a CD on to their computer and converting files to mp3's. Nor are the RCMP making a habit of breaking down doors to bust someone for using their VCR/PVR. At least not unless they're making copies of CD's or video's in order to resell them at places like farmers markets.
I think it is more a legislative tool for record companies to get enough money to stay afloat in an era in which they are as relevant as horse drawn carriages.

The laws don't just cover that. Think about little inconveniences like Pandora. We can't listen to Pandora radio in Canada because of copyright laws (and sadly there's really no alternative here to it). Also certain television shows and content are blocked (usually) if a Canadian broadcaster has purchased the rights to air the material -you could wait 2 years before you see a program that has already aired in the rest of the world.

The radio station I listen to plays Nickelback and the DJs on that station openly complain about it. :haha: I guess they don't have much choice or something.
Speaking of Nickelback, they have a new song out. Makes Snoop Dogg sound like a cultured feminist. What is it with western Canadian bands and glorifying being a deadbeat alcoholic?
It's actually kind of funny that all those "nice Canadians" are listening to songs about doing little more than getting drunk and high all the time. Half the stuff in those songs is about things Harper wants to make punishable with five year mandatory prison sentences.

:D It was the Stampede itself that was said to be one of the biggest parties in the world. Still laughable, but much less so. I haven't attended in over a decade (I think most locals head out of town that week), but in all honesty, it probably is a damn good time. I mean, if the weather is good, one could potentially spend a week getting drunk and riding thrill rides in the sun. Sounds like good times to me.

Detroit Football Fans’ Anti-Nickelback Crusade Drawing Major Support
The resilient, rough chuckles-enduring people of Detroit put up with dog poop air, crime-ring moms, crime-ring stray dogs, fake Koch evictions, and 1,001 other ills. But they refuse to sit through a Nickelback half-time show during this Thanksgiving's Lions-Packers game. Uninspired Canadian crap rock is where they draw the line.
"Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback?," asks Lions fan Dennis Guttman. "Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game." A few days ago, Guttman launched an online crusade against Nickelback's proposed halftime appearance. As of this writing almost 37,000 people have signed it, thereby becoming official Occupy Halftime protesters.
As is often true with petitions, which require the petitioned party to be open-minded enough to consider compromise and The People's wants and needs, this petition might not lead to much. The NFL points out that Nickelback hasn't officially been announced as the official halftime entertainment—but even if they were, the Detroit Free Press reports, "there's no chance" anyone will replace them. Perhaps Detroiters could call upon Motor City Matriarch Aretha Franklin to show up and blow those Mounties off the stage with her gigantic voice and soulpower.
Only 33 people in the whole world have signed counter-petitions supporting Nickelback's halftime appearance, but most of them did so believing they would receive free iPads and help launching their new small businesses in exchange.
