Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION
Extra! Extra! Free Press enters its 140th year
Been around as long as Manitoba
By: Kevin Rollason
Posted: 11/30/2011 1:00 AM
Ulysses S. Grant was re-elected as U.S. president, the Great Boston Fire destroyed 1,000 buildings, and the Mary Celeste sailed from New York before being later found mysteriously abandoned.
And at 555 Main St. in Winnipeg, just weeks after the first cylinder press north of St. Paul, Minn., was delivered by steamboat, William Fisher Luxton and John A. Kenny produced volume 1, number 1 of the Manitoba Free Press on Nov. 30, 1872.
Since then, under the motto of "freedom of trade, liberty of religion and equality of human rights, the Free Press has chronicled the execution of Louis Riel, the rise and fall of numerous parties and leaders in the province and country, two world wars, the dawn of flight, and -- just like its motto -- the signing of free trade agreements with other countries.
Today marks the start of the old lady of Mountain Avenue's 140th year of publishing in Manitoba, a significant number reached by few companies.

So political upheavals in the Arab world and Russia, economic meltdowns in the world's biggest economy, Religious bullshit in Canada, Canada pulls out of Kyoto, the RCMP's continued rampage against Canadians, and what is CBC's main story tonight?
Some hockey player got hurt again, so he must leave the ice.
Welcome to Canada.

You can't even make the argument that all the other things are old news, because hockey players getting hurt and having to leave the ice is something that happens just as much as all those other things.

I've heard there's only 3 left in Canada. Can't confirm that though. We have 1 left in Saskatoon.
3 months ago we had several (maybe 6 of each?) Blockbusters and Rogers Video, now all Blockbusters are gone and all but one Rogers.

Where I live there's "Rogers Plus" stores. They still offer movie and video game rentals, but they also conduct sales and service for digital cable, wireless, and Internet.
I'm surprised Rogers still offers movie rentals, when they offer the same movies on Rogers on Demand. But I guess some consumers still like the experience of going to the video store.

They're Rogers Plus here too and offer all that stuff. Everyone just calls it Rogers Video because that's what it was up until a year or so ago.

Most of the Rogers and Rogers Plus stores are are closed or closing here, there will only be two left in Calgary from what I heard. There is really no need to go rent a movie from a video store any longer, there are so many ways to do it without getting off your couch. The Rogers plus near me had a huge blow out buy one get one free sale on everything. Picked up a few blu rays and games. :P

Nickelback blamed for helping to kill rock 'n' roll
http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20120106/nickelback-rock-roll-death-120106/20120106/?hub=CalgaryHome
Ay-Oh-Ay-Oh-Ay-Oh-Ay!
I shit ye not:
Kicked off the interview with Playboy Contributing Editor Rob Tannenbaum with an open revelation about his criminal record and his hard-partying habit, Kroeger also recalled on the stupidest thing he ever did for a case of beer, saying "I put my own d*ck in my mouth. I was 14 and much more flexible at the time. It was soft and required a lot of pulling. I really wanted that case of beer." Being quizzed on thinking it is fun to be bad, the musician said, "I don't know how many times I got kicked out of school. I just thought it was fun to be bad. To a certain degree I still think it's fun to be bad. You should just never do anything that's going to hurt someone else."
Aside from his soft side, Kroeger indeed is a though and persistent guy, being labeled a "walking penis". About this he commented, "You know anything about zodiac signs? I'm a Scorpio. A Scorpio is pretty much a walking penis. Getting that under control is difficult. Also, I was born in 1974, the year of the tiger, which means I'm a shrewd businessman and I pretty much want to take over the world. I'm a walking penis that wants to take over the world. So you can imagine."

Nickelback can save bowl attendance
Schedule compelling halftime shows. Two words (annoyingly made into one): Nickelback. Sell two ticket sections: Booing and Tomato-Throwing. For 100 bucks, you get into the upper deck and back rows of the lower deck, close enough for Nickelback to hear your boos and taunts. For $1,000, you can sit in the first few rows, close enough to hit the band with tomatoes or other overripe produce. That's a sellout in five minutes, and at prices higher than any other bowl game in America.

Last year's nomination of Incendies followed this year by Monsieur Lazhar's...great news!!!
Montreal filmmaker's Monsieur Lazhar nominated for foreign-language Oscar
MONTREAL - Wow! Montreal filmmaker Philippe Falardeau’s touching drama Monsieur Lazhar has indeed made the short list at the Academy Awards, snaring a nomination in the category of best foreign-language film.
This is the second straight year that a Quebec film has made it into this prestigious category, following the nomination last year for Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies.
This is just the latest honour for the Falardeau film. It won the award as best Canadian feature at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto and was recently named best Canadian film by the Toronto film critics association.

When ABC Spark hits the airwaves this Spring, hit shows including The Lying Game will premiere in Canada and shows that Canadian audiences already know and love, like The Secret Life of the American Teenager, will find a new home on ABC Spark. New Series… New Seasons… New Home… on an All New Network. It’s the channel Canadians have been waiting for. ABC Spark. Life just got brighter.

It will require distant students to shred their coursework after 30 days (can't quite tell if it means 30 days after the lesson ends, or 30 days after the school year ends) to prevent copyright infringement. (Section 30.01(5)) So technically, I guess, all of the school work I have yet to throw out, in a box in my closet, will be illegal under this law. :haha:
Text of the bill: http://www.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Docid=5144516&File=9
I fired off that template email to my MP, who is NDP, and that section was mentioned in his response. It's quite absurd, I think.
Section 30.01 (5) It is not an infringement of copyright for a student who has received a lesson by means of communication by telecommunication under paragraph (3)(a) to reproduce the lesson in order to be able to listen to or view it at a more convenient time. However, the student shall destroy the reproduction within 30 days after the day on which the students who are enrolled in the course to which the lesson relates have received their final course evaluations.
As far as I know, SOPA didn't touch that kind of thing, but then the person who wrote that article didn't mention it, either. I guess all of this infringement is why textbooks cost $80 each? I have a feeling that C-11 will be stretched by publishers to make it illegal to contribute to Wikipedia using their publications.

And the unfortunate thing is that unlike in the United States, the final decision is up to one person and one person only: our dear leader Kim...er, Stephen Harper.
It has to be voted on and pass three times in each house, then be given royal assent by Governor General David Rubberstampington the 28th.
Of course if Harper makes it a whipped vote then he basically does get to pass it unilaterally and without debate. Yay 15th century political system we refuse to change!!!!!!

Degrassi's Wheels death announced, 5 years later
Actor Neil Hope spoke to teens about alcohol abuse
Actor Neil Hope, who played Derek “Wheels” Wheeler on the long-running Degrassi series, died five years ago, it was confirmed publicly for the first time on Thursday.
At the request of his family, there was no public announcement in 2007 at the time of his death, according to Degrassi producers Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn. Hope was 35 at the time of his death.
“We have respected the privacy of the family by not saying anything until now, but our entire team is very emotional about his passing,” Stohn said on his Twitter feed.
“Neil and his character Wheels in the early Degrassi deeply touched many lives.”
Reports said Hope — who appeared on Degrassi: The Next Generation, Degrassi Junior High and The Kids of Degrassi Street — died Nov. 25, 2007 of natural causes.
Wheels struggled with alcoholism during the series and Hope spoke candidly about his parents’ alcoholism and his own struggles with alcohol abuse.

That has got to be the longest gap between a celebrity's death and the death announcement, ever. They waited for Osama bin Laden, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston to all be dead before announcing it.

Ahh, the Zit Remedy. Guilty pleasures of the eighties included tuning into the odd episode of DegJrHi. Ground-breaking show back in the day.

Watched degrassi as a kid in the 90s. So much better than the current shit they're making.

of course he wasn't a celebrity. But obviously people remember him from that show.

Celebrity has many different meanings. The fact that most of us have in common that we know of his guy in spite of not knowing him personally means he fits the bill in some way.

Had someone come on this forum a week ago and said that the degrassi dude was 35 and living in Hamilton, nobody would of dared calling him a celebrity. Death, it seems, has its benefits.
But whatever, not worth arguing about.

he probably commited suicide after watching some old episodes of that horrible show. What is with Canada when it comes to TV, can't we produce shows that are remotely watchable, how can one forget such classics as the fat pig of Kensington,or locally produced horror - excuse my french...the best show to come out of this country the last 50 years is the trailer park boys and that was only shown on Bravo

I was sure I heard about that guy's death when it happened. Maybe I have him confused with someone else.
In other news, "Ever wonder why some bread stays fresh for up to 2 weeks?" No. I am glad it does. I can't eat a loaf in one day, What's New woman.
I think your the one who mentioned that disgusting coldfx commerical over an year ago -the one where that asshole sneezes spit and snot all over the office, they still run it ever morning at breakfast
This pleasant fellow.. yeah. Wonder how many takes they did of him sneezing.

That ain't no bread, that's why it stays "fresh" for 2 weeks. Just like spam isn't meat, and Crap dinner Mac n cheese ain't maccaronni and cheese.

I don't get those "natural selection" hot dogs from Maple Leaf. No fancy chemicals or things you can't pronounce. But it's still the same ingredients... instead they dumb it down to make the consumer think they are buying something pure when it is still processed cow arse and hooves. No smiling butcher in a bowtie will change that.
The bread I used to get didn't grow mould or even get stale. It simply turned grey. I no longer get that bread.
Part of my job is printing labels for a bakery. The ingredients list in is 8 point font (the smallest size legally possible) and takes up half of the label, which is between 6 and 18 square inches. The labels below 8 square inches are pretty much just ingredients and a bar code.

When I lived in Ontario it was impossible to find a good bakery locally; if you wanted to buy bread locally you either bought the processed corporate crap, or you bought really mediocre corporate bread "Baked in Your Metro", handcrafted by accountants and not people who care about quality. Or, you could drive 15 minutes to the nearest real bakery.
The bakery experience is sadly lacking in Southern Ontario.
Lots of bakeries in Thunder Bay, but they're making that processed crap. You basically have to just bake things yourself if you want something good.

there is a bakery where I live, and It has been here for the last 50+ years. It bakes "real" bread, though the owners are getting have high digit ages, so I;m unsure about how much longer it will be until they retire and it shuts down.

Montreal had a dancing Batman. Would dress up in the batsuit. Hang out in front of some semi-touristy spot (e.g., Place Jacques Cartier, or in front of St. Patricks Cathedral, or corner McGill/Peel). Play the batman theme on a shitty ghetto blaster. Dance and look like a total idiot.

I think that Tim Horton's employees, when they are bored (like at night I guess) they just drive around town, throwing cups all over the place to advertise their new Lattes.
Speaking of shitty coffee, the radio ads for Seattle's Best Coffee at Mac's are the worst things I have ever heard. They make that Chinese kid who sang Ricky Martin's She Bangs on American Idol sound like Ricky Martin himself. It's bad enough the places are crime magnets. They don't need to attack us with these commercials.
