working in alberta, every other person seems to be from newfoundland, some of them i can't understand a word they say - i have to say what? what? what? and still can't understand
one example the server said - they want it without sauce and i said no sauce? and she said again without sauce and i was like plain? and she was like no without sauce
finally i realized she was saying they want it with house sauce but the way she said it was without sauce

Who's your favourite singer/band from your city?
For St. John's, I'd have to pick Damhnait...
YaxosG2R6nk
In this song, there's something I especially love about the line, "Smoked me like a cigarette, said that this won't hurt a bit, but you lied because it burns and it burns..." - the lyrics, vocal arrangement, tone, etc. I just really love that part.
And the Kim Stockwood cameo is nice.

But, seriously... I can easily believe most English accents in Canada sound the same to a Francophone. Many of them sound the same to me. I can't hear any difference between Ontario to British Columbia.
But on the east coast, I can, for example, always tell when someone is from Cape Breton. They speak with the generic, Central Newfoundland accent. So if they're not Newfoundlanders, I know where they're from. But I can't tell people from other parts of Nova Scotia apart at all.
I think my favourite Newfoundland accents at the Marystown and the old East End St. John's ones.
The Marystown one is purely Irish. My English teacher was from there and he told us he kept winning bar bets in Ireland because no one would believe he wasn't from there.
The old East End St. John's one is AWESOME. The people in Quidi Vidi have it especially strong. It's almost a Boston accent. St. John's is "Sin Jaawnz". And it takes them two days to say, "Paaark the caaar!"

Is there a website where you can see what certain buildings would look like in your city?
I'm dying to see, for example, what the Burj Khalifa would look like where Scotia Square is in St. John's - or even one of the tall Toronto towers. These buildings are just on such a different scale and I'd love to see them compared to something I know intimately well. It's not the same comparing them to buildings of a similar height when I visit these cities. :-D
That website is called "Skyscraperpage.com". The actual process however is quite difficult. It involves "Open photoshop and do it yourself".

The Queen of Newfoundland folk music - who, sadly, put a bullet in her head in the 70s - singing an old classic.
50or6S8ExwY
As an aside, she's an excellent example of how Quebec is typically depicted in Newfoundland folk songs.
Among the verses of her songs:
"Oh the Frenchmen in Quebec, they likes to shout
That from Confederation, they wants out
Well, if Canada you want to leave, me dears
GO! You're welcome! But, for God's sake, don't come here"
And
"Oh the French in Quebec want a separate state
Including our own Labrador, just you wait
They came down to Belle Isle, but they can't walk our straits
Oh, thank God we're surrounded by water"
And
Don't vote Confederation, that's my prayer to you
We own the house we live in, likewise, our schooner too
But if you heed Joe Smallwood, and that mainland French patois
We'll be always paying taxes to that tribe up in Ottawa
So remember, dearest mother, be a native soul and true
And when they offer pension cheques, just tell them what to do
Yes, keep the old flag flying, take strength from where you stand
As loved our fathers, so we love, God guard thee, Newfoundland

Hardcore Newfoundland folk.
The type that, a century ago, had lyrics like:
We're proud of our own native isle, Newfoundland
No stranger shall hold an inch of her strand
Her face turns to Britain, her arse to your Gulf
So, come at your peril, Canadian wolf
But this one is actually pretty tame...

A great example of a Newfoundland versus St-Pierre-et-Miquelon song - based, of course, on a very true sinking.
The story:
In 1915, on the 10th day of June
At Burke's Wharf, the Marion lay
Prepared for the Banks as was custom to do
All loaded with capelin for bait
The wind, from the northwest, a fine, summer's breeze
As Ike Jones, from St. Jack's, he steered
And the boys in the focsle made plans for that night
When they'd all go ashore in St-Pierre
Some were uneasy, there'd by trouble, they said
'Cause Ike Jones was noted to fight
And at the Cafe de France on the last trip he made
A Frenchman had threatened his life
The challenge to fight was issued that night
As the cheap, French liquor ran free
The French captain then warned the Marion's men
He would answer their challenge at sea
Next day the Marion set sail again
And so to the story relays
The French beam trawler weighed anchor as well
And followed close by in her wake
She's a Fortune Bay schooner heading out for the Banks
With fine, hardy Fortune Bay men
But some on the Cape were o'erheard to say
She'd never be heard from again
The fate that befell the Marion's crew and their schooner
Will never be known
Not a trace and no tidings were ever again
To be heard by those waiting at home
Some say the Frenchman was true to his word
Some say he confessed 'fore he died
That he scuttled the Marion and settled the debt
Not taking one man o'er the side
Families of Skinners, and Mellors, and Myles
Grieve for their loved ones on shore
And the Newfoundland story of loss to sea
Was told as so often before
She's a Fortune Bay schooner, sailing out from St. Jack's
With a fine crew of Fortune Bay men
But never, no more, will she pass by the light
With her jib flapping into the wind

Newfoundland folk music is full of songs dedicated to the prettiest girl in any given village, town, or city.
This is one from the suburbs of St. John's. A very well-known one.
Lyrics are:
Ye ladies and ye gentlemen
I pray ye lend an ear
While I locate the residence
Of a lovely charmer fair
The curling of her yellow locks
First stole my heart away
And her place of habitation
Is down in Logy Bay
'Twas on a summer's evening
This little place I found
I met her aged father
Who did me sore confound
Saying, "If you address my daughter,
I'll send her far away,
And she never will return again,
While you're in Logy Bay."
"How could you be so cruel as
To part me from my love?
Her tender heart beats in her breast
As constant as a dove.
Oh, Venus was no fairer,
Nor the lovely month of May."
May Heaven above shower down its love
On the star of Logy Bay
'Twas on the very next morning
He went to St. John's town
And engaged for her a passage
On a vessel outward bound
He robbed me of my hearts delight
And sent her far away
And he left me here downhearted
For the star of Logy Bay
Oh, now I'll go a-roaming
I can no longer stay
I'll search the wide world over
In every country
I'll search in vain through France and Spain
Likewise Americay
'Til I do sight my heart's delight
The star of Logy Bay
Now to conclude and finish
The truth to you I'll tell
Between Torbay and Outer Cove
'Tis there my love did dwell
The finest girl ever graced our Isle
So everyone did say
May Heaven above send down its love
On the star of Logy Bay

I still get the impression that Newfoundland music gets very little attention outside the province.
Quebec of course is at the bottom. I think I am probably the only person on my street who has heard of Great Big Sea!
SignalHillHiker
Aug 10, 2012, 8:58 AM
^ I agree, to an extent.
It's happened before that someone from Halifax has raised an eyebrow when I mentioned a band, yet someone from Dublin knew exactly which I meant. Icelanders as well as Danes from Greenland were usually pretty good as well. Until the recent financial crisis, they would come over en masse to do their Christmas shopping in St. John's.
Assuming it's statistically true and not just an unfounded impression, I think there are two main reasons. Newfoundland's culture is so musical. A significant portion of the population is capable of creating music - be it singing, playing musical instruments, whatever. So there's just a lot of moderately and even quite talented musicians to choose from. It's not like there are one or two bands the city is pushing. There are dozens at any given time.
Also, I believe some Canadians have trouble accepting anything from Newfoundland that isn't kitsch. There's a reason that a caricature of traditional Newfoundland music like Great Big Sea becomes famous on the mainland while someone whose covers/music could be from anywhere - like Blue-Eyed Blond - doesn't.
And, one more video. Sarah Slean's video from Pouch Cove (pronounced Pooch) north of St. John's.
4S7GvIxAiDg
And her impression of N.L.: "...one of the most inspiring places on Earth.... It's impossible to be distracted from the powerful presence of Life itself here - the rugged land, the ever-changing weather, the magnificent, powerful ocean...it's a place to ponder the vast expanse of time before and beyond us, to ponder the wondrous marvel of being."

I also didn't realize that African Lion Safari is now closer to you than ever before. Has Highway 8 between Hamilton and Cambridge suddenly found a way to uproot itself and come to me?

This popped up on Myspace the other day when I was listening to a band from Winnipeg (http://www.myspace.com/twintwa), because they two are totally related. Also, this one (http://www.myspace.com/redmoonroad).
Back to complaining about things. :frog:

I'm not sure if this band has become famous elsewhere in Canada yet? I believe they've at least become somewhat known in the Maritimes, right?
Anyhow, the reigning darlings of the St. John's music scene... Hey Rosetta.
Hey Rosetta! is really popular here, they sell out every time they come to town. I saw them at Osheaga last year and they killed it. The festival even used their song 'Seeds' on the 2011 highlight video.

Not Canadian but it's so amazing it transcends national borders.

This is fantastically awesome...
http://thescope.ca/news-views/flashbacks/a-brief-history-of-newfoundland-labrador
A few of my favourite bits:
Historically, of course, things weren’t always so rosy. The quality of life in much of the province before Confederation in 1949 could generously be described as ‘medieval’.
The first thing Joey did upon assuming absolute power was hire a Latvian con-artist named Alfred Valdmanis who helped him track down German industrialists to build random factories everywhere. Literally.
...apparently, if hundreds of factory trawlers spend two decades razing the ocean floor, you’ll eventually catch all the fish...
...but anyone who literally runs a national campaign against Stephen Harper, motivated entirely out of spite, is pretty all right on in my books...
And here we are. Newfoundland and Labrador’s story is still unfolding, but if this transparently glib interpretation of history teaches us anything, it’s that whatever is in store next is guaranteed to be hilarious.

I still get the impression that Newfoundland music gets very little attention outside the province.
Quebec of course is at the bottom. I think I am probably the only person on my street who has heard of Great Big Sea!
OH GOD!! I heard so much Great Big Sea in Halifax that I never want to hear them ever again! I even worked two of their shows. Those guys and the inescapable bagpipes. UGH! Bagpipe induced nightmares of drowning in a Great Big Sea of tartan vomit... bagpipes...
That said, Quebec folk music is very similar to Newfoundland and Maritime folk. They have shared Celtic roots and feature much foot-stomping. Maybe a little more spoon action in Quebec folk.

I really enjoy most folk music, but I despise Great Big Sea. And I dislike the sour-faced spoonman outside Ogilvie's.

I've heard Quebec folk and "bleuherbe" (eh). Should be more out there.

My ancestors were mostly carpenters/shipbuilders on my father's side and serviceworkers (a lot of butlers and maids)/masons on my mother's - so they weren't directly fishing themselves - but, like everything in N.L. back then, they relied on the fishery. It'd be amazing to have a sustainable cod fishery back.
I'd love to see places like Harbour Grace bounce back.
There are whole communities in rural N.L. that are... kind of like you're favourite new building proposal that got cancelled. The fishery's return, in a sustainable capacity, would be like a developer stepping in to build that proposal again. On a smaller scale, of course, but it's better than nothing.

"If there's music in hell, it'll be bagpipes."
Although, these Croatian/Bosnian Croat girls prove not all cultures make them sound quite as annoying:

With all the negative press about Marineland today, I wonder if we can sue them for falsely advertising that everyone loves them.
I'm not taking sides, but I think Marineland could handle this better from a PR standpoint. A press release and continuing to air the same TV commercials doesn't cut it anymore.

A conversation I overheard between my parents and my neighbours (who are their age; and now good friends) this evening:
Neighbour Wife: My darling, sure people are going to think he's after beating me. I can barely walk.
Mum: ME TOO, girl! I never thought it'd be such work just to go berry picking out in Avondale. We were there all day for 2 gallons. And I lost half of mine trying to catch a ****ing cat.
Dad: You ladies forget: you're old now.
Neighbour Wife/Mum: *Various grumbles/curses*
Neighbour Wife: Kayaking tomorrow afternoon, then, pet? Shall we go ahead with it? Eh b'y? ****, we might as well.
Mum: Of course! I've got a ****ing tire around my waist since I perfected my Hollandaise recipe. I need whatever workouts I can get. I'm even parking half way across town to go to the bloody corner store. IN HEELS!
Neighbour Husband: Well, ladies, I'm sure the home has a fine game of bingo on if you're not feeling up to kayaking.
Sometimes, I feel as though my family are aliens who can act ALMOST human but not quite all the way... love it, though.

My latest karaoke choice. I can't hit the last note, I do it lower (which makes the climax annoyingly unsatisfying if you know the original), but I can do the rest well enough to shut half the bar up.

When I get married, I will have a Newfoundland wedding - the whole works.
The main thing that I've noticed about Newfoundland weddings that isn't universal (but certainly exists elsewhere as well) is that the man who catches the bride's garter PUTS IT ON the girl who catches the bride's bouquet. And there's music, and cheering, and theatre just as the groom/bride do.
I want that. And everything else.
And part of that is wanting a Newfoundland folk song as my wedding song.
And this will be it:

Israeli is not Canadian, of course... but it is one of those nationalities likely to have Canadian members and to have Canadian citizens interested.
So... my favourite Israeli Eurovision entry of recent years (second only to Will You Dance With Me, with an Israeli woman singing in Hebrew and a Palestinian woman in Arabic, and then both in English), Shiri Maimon.
I actually like the lyrics, "Now that love is gone, where do I belong? Was it right or wrong? Look at me, now... finally I know it's time to say goodbye. Suddenly, all by myself, I feel alive."

Of all the songs St. John's has gotten before the rest of North America, this one was the most obvious. It seemed to become popular and died in St. John's more than a year before it surged to the top of the club charts everywhere else in North America.
It was the one we all heard on the Top 40 a year later and thought, "Holy s****... THAT song? Seriously? Wow... we're not that bad after all!"
In retrospect, it wasn't much to get excited about, hahaha...
