Awesome diagram. Its crazy seeing how dominate just a few cities are.

I can't remember a time when NYC and Chicago weren't well represented but other cities come and go.

For example, Houston, Dallas and Denver during the energy boom in the 80s. Atlanta in the early 90s. Las Vegas and Miami in the 2000s.

Mar 15, 2007, 8:35 PM
:previous: The 600' cutoff is tough on Atlanta...there are so many under construction here just under that height (I'm talking 400' to 500'+ range), but I suppose that's true of many other metros too. VP has to have a cutoff at a high enough height so that the diagram doesn't get more unweildy than it undoubtedly already is!

thanks 4 posting this threade...it's nice to see how los angeles and phoenix are constantly dominating the....oh wait a sec.

but on a serious note, Miami is burning up the place! i just hope they all get filled with the cooling housing market...yeah if you have a 3 million condo in NY, why not sell that puppy and get a million dollar condo down there with a much better view

If this list is supposed to include all 600 footers, the following Miami buildings are missing:

Epic 54 floors, 609 feet (currently at 10th floor)
Icon Brickell North Tower 58 floors 604 foot (currently at 26th flooor)
Icon Brickell South Tower 58 floors 604 foot (currently at 5th floor)

Here is a shot that includes those three buildings:

Holy smokes.....that's amazing to see. Thanks for keeping it up.
It is incredible indeed that there is so much construction in Atlanta and that there is only one building tall enough to show up on this list. The latest burst of development is mostly in the 35-50 story range.....hoping for taller in 2007.

Yah, in my opinion, spires should be excluded. When I judge a skyline I want to see the top of the mass of the building. I think spires do nothing more than exagerate its true hight.

Maybe for the next update you can include the recently assembled tower crane for the Freedom Tower. Right now you only have derrick cranes.

M.K.
Apr 17, 2007, 8:23 PM
The top for me is whatever other than air, so spires, roof, antenna counts on and belong to whole structure, so should be computed.
Freedom Tower - Of course the cranes could be seen in diagram and will stay for a big while as never changes fast in this site. At least the news there is this irrelevant crane.

Latoso
Apr 18, 2007, 9:35 PM
It's pretty easy to understand. He just said that anything above the ground that isn't air (ie. roof, spires, antennas, etc.) should count toward the height of a building.

As far as FT goes, he said that you can already see cranes in the diagram and they will remain where they are for the foreseeable future because progress on this tower appears to be moving at a glacial pace. But at the very least we got some fresh news, even if it's only that lousy new crane. :)

LA is no where to be seen :( By the end of the year, we could have three up there, with the Ritz LA Live breaking ground in May (about 650 feet or so), Park Fifth at 890 feet hopefully breaking ground in October and the 50 Story Gehry Tower 1 also breaking ground in October (Not sure if it will hit the 600 foot mark).

Fantastic job by the way, love to look at the diagram every couple of weeks.
