Wow, I don't remember ever seeing a thread about Djibouti before. My ship pulled into there a few times back in '73. Besides a bit of a dust up we had with some members of the French Foreign Legion, all I remember is the dusty poverty, dirt roads, and warm beer. Doesn't look like things have changed a whole lot. Thanks for the tour.

During a French project in high school, we were broken into groups and given a nation we had to research and pretend we were from. I got Djibouti... I came here wondering if the nation had finally turned things around and was actually building skyscrapers! Nope, looks like one house...

Interesantes fotos. Es impresionante la bruma "calima" atmosférica en el desierto. ¿Son fotos de una vacación?

Thought I'd revive this thread. Why not. :D
Not sure how accurate this info is, but kind of interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjjPF2MQOoM I don't remember much about the city, still it is a fun ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LafnM01BA-Y :) |
There's a Fr strategic naval base left over there, so we can put people around under pressure more easily.
Essentially, its statement is like don't go radical religious weirdos or you'll be bombed out. Of course that base makes public revenues for local authorities. It's not like it'd be for free. That's pretty much everything I know of the tiny country. |
^ It's been 45 years since my Navy ship pulled into port there as noted in our cruise book:
https://www.navysite.de/cruisebooks/ddg2-73/039.htm As you can see, most sailors weren't impressed. Our sister ship got to go to the Seychelles. Then the Yom Kippur War broke out. |
Wow.. I've only been to Djibouti once in my lifetime, and that was a decade ago.
