LAS VEGAS | Project CityCenter | 600 FT / 183 M | 60 FLOORS
Project CityCenter
A $7 Billion Self Contained Urban Metropolis http://img481.imageshack.us/img481/3...phmedium9p.jpg While not as impressive in terms of sheer height vs other buildings being built, I thought this little $7 Billion 66-acre behemoth being built in Sin City deserved its own thread seeing that it is now under construction :) While it does have at it's core a casino and hotel like other Vegas resorts of the past, developer MGM-MIRAGE has taken Vegas to a new level by building what it calls an "urban experience" and a "significant new direction for our city." World class architects have teamed up to design various portions of the 7 tower project, including: *A main 4,000 room 60 story resort hotel designed by Cesar Pelli with twin curving glass towers. 2 boutique hotels: *A Hotel tower run by Mandarin Oriental. *A "Lifestyle Hotel" tower *A 50-story ebony condominium-hotel designed by Rafael Vinoly with 1,543 *2 Condominium Towers by Murphy/Jahn *A 500,000 sq. ft. shopping center Architect Daniel Libeskind is also working on parts of the project. The entire project will be rated LEED from the US Green Building Council. The massive development will create 7,000 construction jobs and 12,000 permanent positions. It is expected to open in 2009. CityCenter Main Resort Hotel http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/775...erhotel4kd.jpg http://img436.imageshack.us/img436/4...00695727tz.jpg Brown Tower is Mandarin Hotel, the two towers on the right are residential towers, directly below those towers is the retail complex. http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/104...72109465bt.jpg Looking the bit north of the previous picture, you see the tall "Lifestyle Hotel" tower at the corner as well as the strange jumbled design of the retail complex to the left of it. http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/445...72111094tn.jpg A closer look at the CityCenter Resort's actual 3d model. http://img486.imageshack.us/img486/2...72110251gq.jpg Mandarin Hotel. The heights of the towers (at least in Vegas terms) can be seen. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3...02050471al.jpg Looking behind the CityCenter Resort Towers, and a large circular area with roads and another tower (presumably residential or condo-hotel) is seen, likely designed by Rafael Vinoly. http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/3...72259430lt.jpg Directly north of and across the street from citycenter, the $1.8 Billion Cosmopolitan Hotel is already under construction as well. It has 2,000 condominums; 1,000 hotel rooms; a 75,000 sq ft casino; 300,000 sq ft of retail, restaurant and entertainment space; and 150,000 sq ft of meeting/convention space. It opens in 2008. http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/494...politan8zr.jpg |
That first rendering is spactacular! It's also great to see the Cosmopolitian underway! :banaride:
|
A little too massive for my taste but its nice!
|
I love this project, it's gonna be magnificent!!!
|
Excellent project. Las Vegas needs some tall buildings. Any construction photos?

Saw this in the Chicago Tribune:
Jahn joins Las Vegas project Chicago architect Helmut Jahn on Monday was added to the roster of star architects for a $7 billion mixed-use development in Las Vegas, joining a group that already includes such well-known firms as London's Foster and Partners. Jahn, architect of the United Airlines Terminal at O'Hare International Airport, will design a pair of residential towers as part of the development, called Project CityCenter. Daniel Libeskind, best known for his master plan of the World Trade Center, will shape retail spaces at the base of the towers, a spokesman for Jahn said. The CityCenter project, being developed by MGM Mirage Inc., is planned to open in 2009 on a 66-acre site on the Las Vegas Strip. |

http://www.klas-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5079629 Google Maps Aerial of CityCenter Project Site To give you an idea of the size of the project, here is a google maps link showing the site, all of that and the parking lot to the left and bottom will become part of the project. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...03615,0.007231 I am trying to figure out the height of the tower behind CityCenter, in the digital rendering I posted above, it looks quite a bit shorter than even the shorter of the twin hotel towers. Here, this is a shot from the backside of the entire project, the third tower can be seen as a black tower with a lower bluish white tower attached to it. The black tower seems to be as tall as the taller CityCenter hotel tower. (The grey building between the black tower and the CityCenter hotel towers is the massive Cosmopolitan Hotel building). Also that big low square structure in front looks to be the mother of all parking garages. http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/5...91944017vr.jpg Another view of the Mandaran Hotel tower. Also notice from this closeup view of one of the condo towers in the right, it looks to have an almost checker board looking glass covering it. http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/3...02048573zg.jpg |
BTW, they call it a 7-tower complex, which is technically correct, but they only list 6 towers in all of the news articles. I've come to find that two of the towers, the main hotel tower complex at the back of the site is connected by a podium, which is why all of the descriptions of the site only yield 6 towers. The Rafael Vinoly "Ebony Tower" is jammed up at the northwestern corner of the site.
|
That is correct. It is news to me however just how tall the podium is however.
The ebony tower is the one I'm trying to find more info on. I wonder why the colors are black and white while most other city center buildings are lighter colored. It's pretty tall too or so it seems. ok here's a better look at that third tower hidden in the back, it's TALL!! (And black) http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/4...02044333of.jpg The foundation of the main hotel being poured. http://img446.imageshack.us/img446/9...02046156dl.jpg Overview of site (it's huge!) http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/2...02053150ik.jpg |
It looks really good.
|
wow the ebony tower looks tall
|
Sweet, I didn't know they are already working on the main hotel.
|
Good to see this baby under construction!

Second floor.

It's really hard to describe how massive this thing will be. So I'll just leave you with a number that will blow your mind:
16,797,000 That's how much square footage this project has. http://dsnet.co.clark.nv.us/dsnetapp...a/P0166576.htm |
View from the top of the New York New York parking garage looking at the back of the PCC site. You can see the western wing of the first two floors of the Pelli tower to the right. That pile of rubble in the foreground is all that remains of the Monte Carlo parking garage.

Really nice!
|
Why don't they have at least one much taller tower on the site? Would provide a nice visual centerpiece and landmark to the complex, both on street and skyline level. If it's called CityCenter, gotta make it look more like it (no one's gonna argue that city centers are usually marked by the city's tallest buildings, at least in the USA).
|
It actually looks like the Cosmo next door (the grey building) is going to be taller.
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/4...02044333of.jpg This earlier rendering did have a peak to the complex. But as you can see, almost everything else is changed too. In this view you can see four additional residential towers lining the back of the lot, parallel to Frank Sinatra Drive and I-15, which are still on the drawing board for future development. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...CITYCENTER.jpg |
Yep, I remember that... Also a shame that so many buildings in the complex are sleek yet bland. It's in the middle of the strip in Vegas, the place where I expect to see the most outrageous architecture on this hemisphere!

If you showed me those renderings at the top any other day, i'd laugh and say, it'll never be built. But looky here, already under construction. kick ass.

Which current hotels/resorts will be considered obsolete (and ripe for demolition) once this is completed?
Remember these? http://www.agilitynut.com/p/dunes.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/dunes.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/circus.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/caesars.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/mgm.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/land.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/frontier.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/hilton.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/Sands.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/stardust.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/sahara.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/trop.jpg http://gaming.unlv.edu/Xanadu/h1.jpg |
Some of the buildings in your pictures are still standing.

Rumors of demolition keep swirling around the Riviera, Sahara, Circus Circus, Imperial Palace, Bally's, Tropicana, and Excalibur. |
i would doubt excalibur is goin anywhere, it has one of the most rooms on the strip and is pretty busy year round. people just want it gone cuz its tacky. (same with circus circus) they would just need a renovation.

ScottG posted this in the Vegas rundown thread:
ABOVE IT ALL By Norm Clarke/Las Vegas Review Journal The $7 billion MGM Mirage CityCenter will take the Las Vegas pool party scene to new heights. At 10 stories up, the swimming pool deck at The Harmon — a 400-room, 240-condominium lifestyle tower — will offer the highest pool party view on the Strip. It will be operated by The Light Group, according to information leaked from Wednesday’s unveiling for senior MGM Mirage management. Also revealed, the names of the other residential towers: • A 50-story condominium hotel tower located between Bellagio and the as-yet-unnamed 4,000-room gaming resort at CityCenter will be named VDARA. • Rising from CityCenter’s retail district will be VEER, twin 37-story glass towers with 358 condominium residences each. • The 400-room Mandarin Oriental hotel will be topped with 227 condominium residences known as the Residences at Mandarin Oriental. VDARA?! What kind of name is that? VEER is a pretty lame name as well. At least The Harmon is a decent name, if not very creative. |
Here are some new renderings of PCC in this PDF (pages 25-35):

Is Vdara the building we were calling "Ebony"?
Anyway, Ebony or Vdara are going in this space. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ngs/Ebony2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ings/Ebony.jpg (The hole is where Cosmo is going.) |
A couple shots of the main hotel looking west.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...dings/PCC3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...dings/PCC4.jpg I think the hole they are digging in front is for some underground parking under the retail area. |
Took a couple more progress shots this afternoon.

Demolishing Riviera would be a sad loss. It is one of the casinos that still maintains the classic Vegas grit feel without sacrifising glamour. Excalibur?! The place is almost brand new, what the hell! And if Circus Circus goes, Las Vegas may bot even be worth visiting anymore, in my opinion. |
God that is horrendous. What are those Vegas planners smoking?

There is actually redeeming qualities about Circus Circus that have nothing to do with it's look, and that is it's the last mass-scale family hotel/casino complex for better or for worse. The good thing about the Strip is that it was once diverse catering to individuals off all income backgrounds from the rich to the poor looking for a room on the Strip. It had a variety of choices. As with any good thing, though, as the Strip has become more valuable that means the little guys get squeezed out.

Photo update.

A little off topic, but in that last picture, you can see the NEW new Aladdin facade. Looks nice!

I still am shocked everytime i see renderings of this project, cant wait to go back to Vegas to check it out...
