TORONTO | L Tower (Libeskind Tower) | 205 M / 673 FT | 57 FLOORS

Couldn't find an existing thread for this Libeskind-designed condo tower that is married to the Sony Centre (large performance space). The new podium incorporates space for the Arts + Heritage Awareness Centre (source of the pics below).

Most of the L condos that were released sold out in a weekend. I believe a spring or summer start for the tower is planned.

Love this building.

super-sexy project. i'm generally not a fan of libeskind's mish-mashes, but i really like this design.

Looks like a giant boot on a foot.

Very nice, great tower for Toronto and very cutting-edge for a Canadian city.

Isn't this Hummingbird Tower...

Quite beautiful. His designs tend to be hit-or-miss, and this one seems to be a hit.

Maldive Jan 4, 2008 12:26 AM

Agreed^

The first renders were bizarre but slowly, surely the images start to make sense... almost as if Daniel spent some serious time looking at the context.

It's difficult to be unique (ina world where 300 Dubai projects have exploited every dark corner of geometry and every imagineable spire add-on)... but I don't think there's a building in the world that a) looks like this... and b) could actually contribute to its location.

Unique design... Soldout in a weekend?

The tower itself looks really nice, but with that base it looks like a really ugly boot. Really unfortunate for such a nice looking building. Now it's downright terrible.

i would barely know it was a libeskind building save for the few skid marks down the sides. could be a positive turn for the guy.

i love how toronto is finally really stepping out into a world-class design realm...

LOVE IT

Are we the only ones who noticed that........? I saw a thread a while back and yeah, it was called the Hummingbird Tower. The tower is nice but the base needs more work.

What I don't understand is why they would even keep the O'keef Centre/Hummingbird Centre, Sony Centre? It was underused and poorly designed to say the least.

It is an over glorified movie theater with a stage. Having seen a few concerts in there over the years, the acoustics are horrible.

The Ballet has it's own theater... what does Toronto need with this theater?

The tower portion is interesting... still not decided if I like it or not.

That's a nice looking tower. Congrats to Toronto.

cabasse Jan 6, 2008 12:07 AM

i want to slide down it, and be flung into a giant pool of water... or maybe even something like cotton candy.

The wave from the tower into the base was used on a SSRS design for the Mandarin Oriental in Atlanta a year ago. Unfortunately it looks like it will get value engineered out before the building starts.

That is one beautiful project.

couple of updates...this was approved by Toronto Community Council in May...the Sony Centre (formerly the Hummingbird Centre), which is the theatre that the tower wraps around, will be closing in about 2 weeks, so that prep work can begin....

and urbantoronto member zach(at)spine3d.com has posted the following hi-res renderings of the L Tower, which were produced by his company....
