LONDON | 2012 Olympic venues
should there be a thread for this? I kind of thought that as things get completed maybe pics could go here:

^ So, so beautiful.

darn you cosmos! i was gonna post this! but i am in loveeee with the velodrome! such a sexy building, the quality is like nothing i've ever seen, it's just love at first sight!
here's a site with more pictures. including this one which is my favorite! |
The only thing I'm not convinced about on the velodrome is the ceiling - it feels a bit bland & value engineered compared to the rest of the space - I can't help thinking they could have done something more interesting, more like the Vancouver speed skating rink, which looked amazing.
|
Gorgeous building, great colour and form. The thin ribbon of glass underneath the massive roof really gives it a wide, flat feeling.
First thing I thought of when I saw this was the Calgary Saddledome. |
Am I the only one who doesn't watch the Olympics?
who cares if somebody can run/swim faster then another person? that's so boring. to me this is just a huge waste of time. BTW this building looks like a giant pringles chip |
its been nicknamed 'the Pringle' already by the British press.
|
I don't suppose that Cloud is still on the table.
|
No, they went with the giant hemorrhoid instead:

nah, giant squid attacking a flying saucer
|
Wow what a gorgeous building. I love the pringle roof, it looks like the Veterans Memorial Coliseum here in Phoenix (which was built in '65):

For those who don't know, London's Games is split between a large new Olympic Park in East London - most of whose venues should be completed this year - and well known venues across London like Wembley and Wimbldeon. There are also events outside of the capitial, like the football tournament which is nationwide, and the sailing events which will be on the south coast. Here's a more full account of what you'll be seeing in just over a year.... Olympic Park: (u/c) I posted a lot of new construction photos in the stadiums thread a week or so ago, so for those who want to see the progress of the main Olympic Park, here's that post: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...&postcount=235 And a video of the completed Park (renders): --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Completed venues (or ones which just need temporary seating installed), which seems to be the main thrust of this new thread: Lea Valley White Water Centre: Lots of landscaping still to do and temporary seating to be installed for the Games but the centre is open: http://www.london2012.com/images/med...ding-71468.jpg http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/...I_1813270b.jpg http://www.london2012.com/images/med...t-look-dur.jpg Wimbledon: http://sportsthenandnow.com/wp/wp-co...ial1_aeltc.jpg Lords: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3181/...fcc5724624.jpg The O2: http://www.woollypigs.com/wp-content...ds/O2arena.jpg http://images.football.co.uk/Dynamic...b3215df1f9.jpg Eton Rowing Lake: http://www.windsor.gov.uk/imageresiz...&action=Header http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/4...-flatwater.jpg ExCel: http://www.newham.com/files/p.316.img.jpg Earls Court: http://www.london-traveltips.com/pic...ion-centre.jpg Hampton Court Palace: http://www.surreyproperty.com/photos...01DSC_0205.jpg Weymouth and Portland: http://blogs.culture.gov.uk/main/ima...erial_blog.jpg Woolwich Barracks: http://www.corbisimages.com/images/6...F/MJ001053.jpg Wembley Arena: http://www.gochauffeur.co.uk/images/...00x375_omg.jpg Horse Guards Parade: http://sweffling.files.wordpress.com...pg?w=466&h=300 http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/...x286_popup.jpg http://www.designboom.com/cms/images/ridm/po01.jpg Greenwich Park: http://www.london2012.com/images/med...park-72858.jpg http://si.smugmug.com/Portfolio/Port...34_48eKY-M.jpg Hyde Park: http://www.corbisimages.com/images/6...AAFB001419.jpg Wembley Stadium: http://www.smartcoolpicture.com/wp-c...m-at-night.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5131/...5088e46a_b.jpg Old Trafford (Manchester): http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3233/...34231f50_o.jpg Millennium Stadium (Cardiff): http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1027/...07258e14_b.jpg St James' Park (Newcastle): http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2714/...db7281f3_b.jpg Hampden Park (Glasgow): http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2451/...1f966458_o.jpg City of Coventry Stadium: http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/200...03_600x398.jpg http://www.london2012.com/games/venues/index.php |
London is doing a fantastic job in getting ready for the Olympics, it really seems that the 2012 games will be among the best in history.
|
London is doing a great job!! They are doing a good job. Fixing the tube to avoid any problems as overcrowded tube stations, new buildings etc. All these is given oppurtunity to people to work which is even better. I can't wait for the Olympic games is going to be one of the best event ever!

Wow, so the main Olympic stadium is all finished now. I'm wondering how the Olympic cauldron will be integrated into the design of the stadium, or if it'll be a free-standing structure.
