^ Parts of the Richfield Tower still stand. Sorta. There are two doors on the bottom/rear of the City National Tower.

I wince whenever I think of the demolition of the old atlantic richfield bldg. that's one landmark that I very much wish could have been saved....although the twin towers that replaced it are crucial in their own right. but surprisingly enough, I didn't realize certain other ppl....at least in the past....would not only not have agreed with me, they'd have even recommended doing just the opposite.

meanwhile, I think of the person or persons responsible for redoing the top of one of the 2 towers that has long since replaced the richfield bldg & the property around it, & ruining its simple dignity.

this is why I try to grin & beat it when it comes to clashing opinions....towards viewpoints that may run counter to my own....over what makes dt good or bad, or why one proj is better than the other, or why some new devlpt isn't good enough, or why another devlpt is better. I also have to try to not be surprised when ppl like Cedd Moses can take a stance that is so unpredictable & oddly contrarian.

Quote:

In spite of its landmark status, the Richfield Building attracted largely negative critical opinion for much of its existence. At the time of its completion, Los Angeles Times art critic Arthur Millier derided the tower’s design for its insensitivity to the region’s climate and architectural context, giving glowing praise instead to Bullock’s Wilshire. In his landmark book The Image of the City (1960), urban planner Kevin Lynch described the Richfield Building simply as “ugly.”

There should be a rule that the Richfield is never to be discussed. Such a freaking shame.

:haha: sorry about that. Its just soooooo heart breaking. Granted, I'm glad that at least she wasn't replaced with a parking lot or garage but man its just sooooo heart breaking. Makes you wonder how would the downtown skyline have morphed around her if she was still here.

I think the set up of our towers would be total different in the specific area. Or better yet, makes you wonder if she would fit in nicely with our current crop of buildings. I'm almost willing to bet that downtown would have sprung up a little further south instead of springing up on bunker hill.

Forgive me, I'm about to show my age. I never knew that the building was open on one side and in the center, I always thought that it was a solid building. TRULY a gem that shouldn't have been torn down and easily the top 10 in lost American architecture.

While I loved Richfield i'm more sour over the loss of the RKO. Located nextdoor to Freehand, and across the street from May Co, it was a beautiful gem that is now the home of some 1 story club and the parking structure nextdoor. Some could consider it a twin of the Warner down the street.

While we are on the topic of preservation COS is about to rip down the Olympic Theater marquee and demo 100% of the interior. If you want a plain box retail slot, than take one of the 100+ vacant ones throughout DTLA. This is unacceptable and pathetic for DTLA to allow such a thing.

Why can't they just put COS on the marquee like Urban Outfitters? Seems wasteful.

This is kind of random, but I was just in the Sunset and Gower area and it was booming. Congrats!
