I have to agree that things are much better this year with crime in general being down by a good percentage. The majority of murders this year have been gang or drug related.

It's a good thing crime is down then :shrug: . I think the number of murders happening in a city is a good indicator of the overall level of crime, since many of them ARE gang and drug related. Who really cares how many cars are stolen in a city (unless it becomes and epidemic), I think we should be a little more worried about rapes and murders.

Take a look at the crimestat page for Winnipeg posted on the previous page.

Overall crime in Winnipeg is down 34%, while murders are up 55%. Obviously Winnipeg shows that murders are not a good indicator of overall crime.

Again, murder is a highly publicized, sensationalized crime. The chances of being murdered seems to have more to do with the lifestyle you live more than anything else.
I highly doubt anyone is this country walks around fearing that they will be murdered or raped in their everyday life. That being said, I would bet that you do lock the doors of your house, garage, car, etc. which points towards those types of crimes and their prevention mattering more in the daily lives of joe citizen, rather than the fear of being murdered.

And FYI, auto theft is/was at epidemic rates in Winnipeg.

Believe me, I saw the chart. I forgot that all crimes which occur are documented and charted on SSP :rolleyes: . I just think that if drugs and gangs are the prime contributer to that 55% jump in murders this year, then there is obviously a significant amount of crime going on and there is probably something to worry about. I love how people think that gang violence is separate from regular people violence. If your city let's that go unchecked long enough, innocent bystanders will die....just like that young girl in Toronto last year. Ottawa has gangs, drugs, guns, and murders too and I definately won't take any published decrease in crime rate to mean there's no problem, especially if our murder rate starts to spike.

^ ummm, that crime stat list documents all the major crime stats for Winnipeg. That's the point of the system. If it's a crime that is reported or documented by the police it's on the list. If you don't believe me, go to this webpage and click on the "crimestat" link in the middle of the page

Back to your point, I guess if anarchy reigned supreme and drug dealers ran rampant around our streets I maybe concerned for my personal safety.

However that certainly isn't happening in Winnipeg or any other Canadian city, and the fact our murder rate is up this year (after being down last year) certainly provides little basis for your concerns.

the spike this year is from some triple murders we had interesting tidbit is murder is lower in the north end compared to last year witch is generaly labed as the bad part of the city

crime over the last couple years is gone down. you can compare the numbers going back 3 or 4 years if i'm not mistaken and theres also a map of were the crimes are happening in each district

In the GTA so far there has been 22 murders, 19 of those have been in Peel region(Brampton, Missisauga). That is the most peel region has ever had, and theres still 4 months left to go.

Calgary is really on a roll lately. There have been 3 or 4 in the past few weeks, including 3 drive by shootings at least.

Friends and family confirmed the tragic news Monday: the man killed in an apartment brawl is 45-year-old Andre Paquet.

Paquet was found in a 4th floor unit at 17 Edgewood Avenue early Sunday morning. Police allege that a man and a woman, both in their 30s, were seen fleeing the scene.

"They were last seen running between two buildings in the Kingston Road and Dundas Street area," outlined Det. Graham Gibson.

Paquet was rushed to St Michael's but died in hospital of stab wounds to the chest.

Later Monday, a Canada-wide warrant was issued for 44-year-old Joseph King of Toronto.

The two people seen fleeing the scene are not suspects, but they are persons of interest to police. The first is described as:

I don't a see need to be "concerned" about any increase in murders. Let's face it, most of the murders are gang-related, so most of those killed are the trash of society. Trash taking out trash - it is not such a bad thing.

Murders in Sherbrooke are almost inexistant. No murders in the past 4 years I think. We get one murder every 4 or 5 years! Not bad for a city the size of Regina, who average 5-6 murders a year!

I hink Calgary is the murder capital of Canada right now. Unless the Sask cities are having a bad year too.

I've actually been there before. I stayed there for a week and It wasn't that bad. Way too many bears though!

There was 0 murder in Québec last year too, an area of about 1 million people.
