Las Vegas - Highlights

Las Vegas highlights photographed in October 2007 and April 2008:

The Strip from the air:
The main area of hotels and casinos is along Las Vegas Boulevard, clustered together in a rapidly sprawling city in a hot dry Nevada desert valley.

Walking trails fan out from the center, which features gardens, a playground, a museum called the Origen Experience focusing on natural and cultural history of the region, the Desert Living Center focusing on practical environmental solutions to living design and techniques here, and a cafe. The Nevada State Museum is also being built as part of this complex.

Downtown:
The center of the city is small, and its major feature is the string of older casinos and hotels along Fremont Street. The area has been revitalized with restorations of historic neon signs from the city's past that have been mounted on pedastals along Fremont East and on the facade of the modern entertainment complex called Neonopolis. A modern canopy that features nightly short themed light and music shows, called the Fremont Street Experience, has been constructed over the most concentrated part of the street which has been transformed into a pedestrian mall. Despite these improvements, the lively focus of visitor attention is overwhelmingly centered on The Strip.

Fashion Show Mall:
This indoor mall is on The Strip and features a soaring architectural canopy above its main entrance plaza. Inside is a fashion show pavilion and runway that lifts out of the floor for events.

Strip casino hotels:
Most of the mega-resorts are located along a several mile long part of Las Vegas Boulevard a few miles South of downtown. Specific exotic themed complexes are giving way to more sophisticated slick modern environments, and it is interesting to see some of the relatively older places shedding their unique brand of tack to fit in with the new breed.

Red Rock Casino Hotel:
Many casino hotels are scattered around the city in addition to downtown and The Strip, and this is one of the newest. It is located on the outskirts of the metro area in a suburb called Summerlin, one of the many rapidly developing areas.

Great stuff, nice to see UNLV and downtown Las Vegas. Thanks!

LAsam Aug 31, 2009 5:23 PM

LV has to have more eye candy per square foot than any other city in US. Thanks especially for all the interior shots!

sask1982 Sep 1, 2009 4:21 PM

Thanks for posting those pics! I just got back from Vegas and now i want to go back to explore the U of LV and the Springs Reserve - two places i would've never known about/thought to check out.

Roaming Sep 3, 2009 5:53 PM

I couldn't wait to see you doing Las Vegas! Fantastic job!

yerfdog Sep 4, 2009 8:11 PM

I really love these threads. You have a way of making every city strange, or unfamiliar, and yet uniform, in that you always find similar types of shots or architecture in every city. I mean that as a complement.

Jularc Sep 8, 2009 2:39 AM

So many cool casinos to choose from!

Very, Very Nice Photo Thread, this is coming from a professional photographer.
Awesome!

Awsome Pictures makes me want to to to Vegas now lol a couple of shots from the Stratosphere tower would look awsome.

dktshb Oct 11, 2009 6:04 PM

It looks like a well thought out modern campus there for UNLV. Thanks for sharing.

geomorph Nov 7, 2009 11:44 PM

Thanks for all the compliments, and yes next time I go I will try to get up in the Stratosphere tower!

I posted a Las Vegas thread a number of months ago which featured several shots of the Vegas area taken from the Stratosphere Tower observation deck. I'm sure they're still around here somewhere! :)

And damn, awesome photos, geomorph! I'm actually going to be in Vegas tomorrow-wednesday on a little trip with my dad, staying at Planet Hollywood... Maybe I'll stop being such a lazy ass and get some more shots for you all!

geomorph Nov 11, 2009 7:03 PM

glowrock, enjoy your trip and be sure to report back on the city center progress!

Sulley Nov 11, 2009 7:56 PM

I missed this one... great shots. Ironically I've never been to Vegas.

geomorph Jan 30, 2011 12:19 AM

I have started a new thread of pictures taken in December 2010 that focus on projects not seen in this thread. There are enough to justify not attaching them here! The new thread is called Las Vegas - Highlights 2: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=188411
